    What kinds of dash cams have you installed, and what do you like about them?

    Thanx for another amazing video 😊
    Also a cam view for right and left side of the car would be great . Specially in the carpark What about 360 cam ?

      Unfortunately, it's not possible with the way BMW designed the camera system in the i8.

    Wow!!! It’s that easy?! 😲😳😱
    Okay, I’ll check where my Mercedes has a port.
    If I do a rear window cam, where would it plug into? A longer wire into the same port?
    My car has a cigarette lighter port behind the front seats, too.
    Great and helpful video! Thanks, Pat! 😀

      Cool! Yeah, you can get a USB extension cable for the USB power wire if you wanted to mount a rear facing DDPai. But I wouldn't make it a priority, honestly. I have rear facing on two cars and I never look at it.

    For the I8, how about an additional exterior camera mounted somewhere around the rear license plate? Watching you do the install, almost looks like the I8 had such an install in mind and made it especially easy so that even a Dinosaur 🦕 could do it. 😉 Save the Wave.🙋‍♂️

    • @PatsGarageOnline

      Thanks Peter! I'd have to do an external camera as you suggested. I just can't find a reason to do it. Having a rear view camera might be nice in a hit and run situation or a bump and run in a parking lot, but that's why I have insurance. I like having the front camera in case of an insurance dispute. But, besides that, it's only cool for uploading content to UA-cam when people run you off the road. 🤣

    This is great! I think I can do this :) Btw, is there a way to keep plugging into the 12v port and not drain the battery while the car is parked? I tend to park my car for a week straight and one day I will forget to unplug it!!

    Hi Pat, thanks for the great vid. Is it possible for me just to leave it plugged into the 12v socket? Or do I need to unplug it every time I’m not using the car??? Thanks

    • @PatsGarageOnline

      I leave it plugged in. It goes to sleep after a while and will start recording again if it sensed an impact.

    Hey Pat, excellent as always. Quick question.. Can the Dash Cam has the ability to record yourself if your driving? for Ex, if I get stopped by a policeman can you move around the cam & record the conversation?

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline 4 роки тому

      Thanks. Yes, you can spin it around to face the cabin, but if it's on the passenger side of the car, it's not going to see you or the officer because the rear view mirror will block that. You can mount it on the driver's side of the rear view mirror and that will work perfectly. Note, the image will be upside down, obviously, if you spin it around, so you'll need to edit it right-side up post-processing.

    Hey pat quick question as I just bought one of these I8s. I have a radar detector plugged in and it seems to always stay on if the car is charging. If it is not charging it powers down after 5 or so minutes. Is this normal and should I unplug it if I am going to be charging the vehicle so I am not draining the cars battery? I don’t want to walk out one day and I can’t turn it on haha.

    Interested in buying one now Pat! One question, say if the car was at the main dealer having work done, could I leave it plugged in to record but turn it on\off remotely via the app so not drain the battery? Might be really useful if could do that!

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the question. You could leave it plugged into the 12v socket, but after about 10 minutes, the car will turn off 12v power to the cabin in order to prevent the lights and accessories from drawing power. Also, if the High Voltage battery or 12v battery is disconnected, you run into the same issue. The ConnectedDrive app won't give us the ability to enable or disable the 12v socket. I've done some research and there are power bricks out there that accept 12v for charging and provide 5v USB for the device. It's likely that this could be plugged into the i8 as a battery backup UPS device. I haven't tried it yet, tho.

    Extremely interested in buying this dash my bmw also has the 12V constantly. Have you always unplugged it when you were done driving? It just seems like something I’d constantly forget when I get out the car

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline 3 роки тому

      I left it plugged in all the time. It doesn't draw enough current to result in the 12v battery losing power, quickly. If you're driving the car every few days, the battery will recharge.

      I think it turns off. I am almost certain off it. I have my dash cam plug into that socket and my dash cam has a blue light on the plug to let you know it’s on and when I have left it for a while the blue light goes off and the camera isn’t filming. I cannot find that it is a constantly powered anywhere other than here. Are you 100% yours is live all the time ?

    Just a random idea, but is there a way to hack into the i8’s stock cameras all around the outsude and piggyback record? Like the TeslaCam does

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline 4 роки тому

      Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any way to do this. The camera data isn't being recorded by the i8 and there is no physical output from the iDrive unit to be able to attach some kind of DVR. BMW has made it difficult to make major changes like this.

    • @kentgibson9527
      @kentgibson9527 4 роки тому

      @@PatsGarageOnline Thats too bad.... there must be a way though as the newer BMWs are coming out with a "Driver Recorder" that piggybacks on the vehicles cameras..

      @@kentgibson9527 The BMW i8 technology was developed in 2013 and hasn't had a major change since then. The small upgrades that were implemented in the LCi 2019+ model years didn't include the camera technology available to the other BMWs. It's sad that the i8 was never improved upon.

    Hi Pat, I have a question. When it is raining, how is the vision of the camera? I suppose the wipers don't come that far as where the camera is sitting? Thanks in advance, Dirk

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline 4 роки тому

      You are correct. The wipers don't swipe in front of the camera. I keep my glass clean and it's ok. It would be better if it was placed where the wipers swipe.

    this option is ugly. In a 100k car, no one wants to see cables with the cigarette lighter. please only install the Car Eye from BMW. here you take the power from the CAS Module and no one sees cables.

    Very amateurish installation. Surely you would hardwire this to the fuse panel

    • @PatsGarageOnline

      The i8 provides full time power to that 12v connector and it's up and out of the way. Super easy and saved me a bunch of grief trying to lay upside down connecting to a fuse block at age 45. LOL
