  • HOUMT SOUK old town-capital of the Tunisian island of Djerba with around 65,000 inhabitants.
Houmt Souk is a city in southeastern Tunisia and the capital of the island of Djerba. With around 65,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the region.
The place has a long trading tradition, as evidenced by several old caravanserais. The Romans already owned a settlement here, the name of which was passed down as Gerra. During the late antiquity the place was called Girba. This then new name carried over to the island known up to then under the name Meninx. A Roman Catholic diocese existed on Girba until the Islamic expansion.
Today Houmt Souk is mainly determined by tourism. In the city there are many tourist shops, the administration of the island, a small fishing port, the Bordj-el-Kebir fortress and the folklore museum.
Here at the markets and in the numerous shops of the city you are guaranteed to find one or two souvenirs or souvenirs.
