I don't think they would have beaten the 1986 Giants in Super Bowl XXI because that Giants team was a on a date with destiny, but I bet they would have fared better offensively in that game than the Broncos did. *The Broncos running backs always let them down in Super Bowls in the 1980s, but I think Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner would have Kosar's back in Super Bowl XXI.* As for 1987, I doubt the Redskins would have beaten the Browns like they beat Denver 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII. That Super Bowl would have been closer, and it could have went either way between the Browns and Redskins. The Redskins were really good in '87 and I'm glad they won that Super Bowl because it did a lot for my race as far as Black quarterbacks getting a seat at the table.
In 1988, if Bernie Kosar wouldn't have gotten hurt in Week 15 against Miami with the injury he suffered in that game knocking him out of the season finale versus the Oliers and the Wild Card round of the playoffs, who knows how far the Browns would have gotten in the postseason that year. Shoot, they might have gone to Super Bowl XXIII to play the Niners. The '88 Browns were just as good (especially with Kosar) or better than any AFC squad in the postseason that year. To me Super Bowl XXIII would have been close if the Browns opposed the Niners just like it eventually was between the 49ers and the Bengals. The 1988 49ers were the most vulnerable of the 49er teams that won Super Bowls in the 1980s, so the Browns could have upset them. *In 1989, no f*****g chance that the Browns would have beaten the '89 Niners.* That 1989 Niners team would have beaten the Browns by two touchdowns or more. That 1989 49ers team was on another freaking planet than other teams in the NFL that year. Even if the Browns would have played a perfect game in Super Bowl XXIV, I still don't think they would have gotten within a touchdown of the Niners as far as the final score was concerned. *So, in essence the Browns could have won a Super Bowl either in 1987 or 1988, as those years were their best chances to win a ring. I think the 1987 Browns would have made better adjustments on both sides of the ball in the second quarter and in the second half of Super Bowl XXII than the '87 Broncos did.*
They beat the Browns in the 1971 playoffs, then lost to the Dolphins in the AFC championship. In 1970 they beat the Bengals, then went on to beat the Cowboys in the 1971 Superbowl. Maybe Don was confusing those games. @ 2:35
