I was 15 when this dub came out, and it was a different time. Younger girls showed interest in older guys. This is just another “good girl enthralled by older bad boy” thing. It’s still a better love story than Twilight, though.
I think he genuinely loved Molly at the end. When he realized he was actually capable of loving someone, but reality set in as he faced the doom and gloom girls. And because of his past and connections to the Negaverse, it became obvious to him that he could never give Molly the life she deserved because she'd be a constant target for Queen Baryl to use against him. My theory is that's why he gave up in the end. Even though he was more than capable of protecting Molly, he didn't want to put her through that. So I think the real reason Nephlite died was because he loved Molly and wanted her to be happy and have a normal life.
I think that Molly’s reaction to Nephrite’s death is better in this dub rather than the ViC dub coming from a person who watched both. But the age difference in that relationship was very concerning 🌝
It’s creepier because they had him sound like a 30 something year old man. Not to mention she’s still like what? 13? 14? I don’t get why people think the age difference between somebody who’s 14 and somebody who’s 19 is okay. I was even creeped out by the Serena and Darien relationship after finding out he was a little older.
Uh, does everyone really have their minds this far in the gutter?! I mean, sure the age difference Molly is 14 and he's 19 is off-putting.... that is if sex really all you folks think about and believe that the path all relationships end at? I remember when I first watched the series, I never got any real sense that things would have escalated to that point. Mostly it was just Molly being protected by Nephrite, and him apologizing to her for being a liar and manipulator. That fact that she cared about him, even helping bind his wound, wasn't necessarily based on her crush over him, but because he risked himself to protect her from those monsters before. The idea that, even if he survived and they got that Chocolate Parfait together, that anything more would come from that is ridiculous. I honestly didn't read anything into any of this that might grow into some larger romance, never mind anything sexual. Final thoughts: Folks don't be gross!

I agree that probably nothing would have ever happened between them if Nephrite would have survived because he recognized she was an innocent, very very kind, and deserved better (though I have no idea if he recognized that the age difference and thus the power difference is also a problem)... But in real life, when older guys get a chance with a younger girl who is eager, many of them don't stop. I was 21 when I got involved with a 36 year-old, and though we were both consenting adults, I look back at that with a lot of ick, because he was a manipulative, selfish, immature man, that wouldn't have known how to be with a woman his own age, and I unfortunately know now how common that is. Nephrite is a complicated fictional character that won all of our hearts because he had a genuine change of heart, but if he wasn't fictional, this would be a problem and just not a good thing to model as okay for girls.

It wasn't a relationship, and it was never framed as "okay" to be one. Almost everything Nephrite does to Naru is to manipulate her to get to Sailor Moon and his civilian identity being a "cool adult" is entirely deliberately reflective of his role as basically a predator. In the end of his arc, Nephrite is moved by Naru's legitimate kindness, but it's never suggested that he would reciprocate a romantic relationship. This is all blatantly obvious in the show, so I'm not sure what the game here is in suggesting the "writers" were writing a romance. Although this clip is from the dub so who knows what that was doing.
The reason I mentioned it was a relationship is because of how people view it and the connotations behind it. We all know he’s Type in naru x nephrite and you’ll see a ton of fan videos. Just weird how the teams didn’t see or failed to acknowledge how weird it looked
@@weebzillaofficial They did see how weird it looked because they deliberately and explicitly wrote him as a predator and this is the entire point of his character. Every episode where he seduces Naru, it's part of a villainous plot that needs to be stopped by Sailor Moon. At one point after he convinces Naru to do something for him they literally show a bunch of moths around a light and one of them touches it and lights on fire and burns. This couldn't be any more obvious.

Idk I almost feel like Naru in the sense that I know he was a piece of shit but my "I can fix him" weakness was too fucking strong and I crushed on him anyways
I definitely understand how his emotional abuse and predatory behavior combined with the age difference made that relationship possibility wholely inappropriate. But I just find it really weird how I fell for him like Naru anyways. Which admittedly is concerning, I'd rather not any young people watch that without their parents and think that kind of relationship is ok. I'm a grown ass woman and got mixed feels after all
So yes he was preditory and manipulative to Naru/Molly but you can't use ages in this show since Usagi/Serena is a 14 year old dating Mamoru/Darien, an 18 year old. Nephrites appearance was meant to be 18-19. The voice actor they gave just didn't fit that.
I don't think the dub really made a difference, whether the old dic dub or the Viz dub. Nephrite was a villain. He was supposed to sound like a villain. In the 90's a lot of voices were pretty unique, to be fair. But he definitely was a creep either way. He drove a Porsche and looked like he was in his mid 20's to begin with. Additionally, Usagi is with Mamoru and he's old as hell. And Minako...oof, don't get me started on how she intentionally makes lewd jokes about being with older guys so lmaaoo. It just seemed like a recurring theme, but tbh I preferred the 1st dub when he passed away. On another note, I always thought Nephrite reminded me from Vegeta for some reason...

Nephrite sounded old in the dub, in original he is what people would say 19 , I enjoy the DIC dub but I am happy the new dub made him sound younger while the old dub he sounded like he was 40 😅
