Powerful storyline, great acting, strong emotional discourses. Traditional ending with justice being served, the bad guy admits his guilt, and of course, true love conquers all!
I like how this movie has a diverse set of characters. The mute guy, the old black guy in the swamp, the pretty school teacher, the orphaned child of a criminal, the rich guy, the jazz musicians that work at the soda shop, the cops. Its much more interesting than the usual stories from this time where everyone is from the same place and class and white.
1:05:15. Any hope for redemption ends when he walked thru that door. Surprised at some supporting players. Faces we came to know oh, so well! This was a very good film. Interesting work with shadows and silhouettes.
Although I still feel for the main character's situation, there are several times in the film when it is difficult. One example is when he is relieved that a friend of his is a suspect in the murder, and disappointed when his friend is found not to be suspect.
Dan is mentally disturbed by all the childhood trauma he experienced. Why didn't any adults stop this trauma? Even the sheriff admitted that he knew what was going on. Jerry, the bully and banker's son, was clearly physically terrorized by his dad. Is the sun ever out in this town?
Very intense tale of nature vs nurture. Henry Morgan, Dave's mute friend, was the only actor I recognized. Morgan was best known as Bill Gannon on TVs Dragnet and Col. Potter on TVs M*A*S*H. Also he had characterized President Harry S. Truman in Backstairs at the White House (a TV Mini Series 1979).
How 'bout Lloyd Bridges, the rich bully ("Sea Hunt"), Ethel Barrymore, the old lady, and the character actors who played the bank examiner and the old doctor?
Criterion thinks enough of the film and it's director to put in their collection. Like my granny always said, “Opinions are like azzholes. Everybody's got one."
Was this one of the old Republic serials? That might explain the frequent fades-to-black then resuming the story lines. Interesting to see Harry Morgan as a young man playing a deaf-mute.
As a movie, the character of hero is accepted but in REAL life, one has to overcome these traits as they not only destroy their life but also people who are connected to them. Getting into some sort of aloofness or excessive anger/ frustration doesn't help to solve the problems of life. Stand up, be bold and face the challenges of life with confidence and courage
Unbelievable number of ads.. pushing us to pay for ad free. I’ve resisted for a long time but they’ve worn me down They are relentless. Great movie but destroyed the joy with the barrage …. The incessant barrage.. The Never Ending Barrage…. on the mind… Destroying the continuity. It’s madness.
As soon as the first ad comes on I bail out of UA-cam and head to the Internet Archive. Thousands of these old movies there. All for free with zero adds.
This is NOT FILM NOIR. A good film, but there are no NOIRISH aspects. For some reason everyone is labeling a black&white film as FILM NOIR, this film is certainly NOT NOIR.

Plot spoiler 😄
Dane Clark, a great actor in so many great movies! Thank you for the download!
im sort of thinking what we are looking at here visually is a film masterpiece...on so many levels.

I totally agree with you! Such a masterpiece!

Oops, I may have spoken too soon, it wasn't over. A film that keeps me guessing is a rarity. I shall watch on....
This was a GREAT film. I recommend.

@@teleosus1 In a way, but I don't think they were friends, just acquaintances. In fact, Williams wants to fleece Danny at cards.
Good to see Gail Russell.

That's one reason they call it "noir."

So poor Danny had problems as a kid and grew up to be jerk. The love story is unbelievable. Who, especially a woman, would put up with him?
Any woman who knows a good thing when she sees it, jerk.
Women put up with jerks all the time lol

It leaves me wondering as to events the Director/Writer may have witnessed . Curiously empathetic for the times .

NOT FILM NOIR, ITS A DRAMA. film noir uses incredible photography, moody sets and lighting with a sense of the uncanny in the script.
Exactly
Wasn't familiar with this one. Very intriguing!
Wow. That was great.
Great movie , great actors and actrices
2:47 The actors are casting shadows on the sky in the background!!
Not a bad movie. Thanks
I really thought this a great film. Rex Ingram was always a favorite.
Running time is actually 1:30 and some seconds. The rest is black screen. Good movie!
The guy who played Billy was on MASH
The sound was out of sync.

Good movie spoiled by a cheesy Hollywood ending.

Make the other guy a chick and the story suddenly makes sense in another sense. It’s alright 😉
Tedious, tiresome, waste of tune ...
