His hobbies include polishing sea shells, turning them into bras.
His bffs are Ariel and Simba.

As a Singaporean I'm really touched by this dedication to Singapore ❤️ LOVE YOU SORTED FOOD!!!!
    1. Barry's laksa is almost 100% authentic. Thank you so much!! ☺️
    2. Roti john was done well! Although some versions coats the sandwich with a beaten egg and then pan fry it. Like a french toast. Try it! If not, it needs some EGGS in it 🍳
    3. Good attempt at the satay. although as a Singaporean Chinese, pork satay is still the best :) and it really needs to be cooked over a charcoal grill and the sauce is a little too pale

Haha don't worry about it! Here in Singapore, there's many different races of people living together. I can't really name them all, but the ethnicities here are mainly categorized by the "CMIO" system: Chinese, Malays, Indians and Others. The largest ethnic demographic is the Chinese, although there is also a large Malay Muslim and Hindu Tamil population as well. There's also quite a sizable expatriate community here as well. With so many ethnicities living in one country, we do often have squabbles and conflicts due to cultural differences, but we generally always put aside our differences and get along with each other pretty well~

chicken satay represent Singapore better bc We're multicultural so having it pork isn't fair. and I haven't seen any pork satay around bc it's usually authentically made by indian/malays

Hello laddies, Singaporean here. Really appreciate the thought that goes into this week's theme! Just my 2 cents here
    1) Really good attempt for Jamie's take on Roti John! Personally I felt it was a strategic choice to leverage upon your knowledge of sandwiches/ bahnmi & recreate it into a Roti John. That Singapore Sling joke is pretty good too :)
    2) Barry's laksa earns my point too! Maybe substitute the chicken with some steamed cockles, and it'll be a downslide victory hands-down from Singaporeans
    3) Rather than our humble satay which looks smaller, Mike's satay is comparable to Turkish kebabs. Our peanut sauce is much coarser from grounded peanuts, grated ginger, chili oil, with some pineapple puree for an authentic Hainanese touch :)
Besides Nasi Lemak & Chicken rice, if anyone makes "Char Kway Teow" (Noodles (Egg + Rice) stirred fried in dark soy sauce) , "Bak Chor Mee" (Loosely translated into Minced Pork noodles) or "Fried Carrot Cake" (Rice Cake Omelette with diced CaiXin (Sometimes known as Chinese Kale) pickles + carrots), it will be easy to locals over too! :D

As a Singaporean, I'm so happy that you guys decided to do a video dedicated to my country. I've been living here in the UK for a while now, and while it took a while to get used to things, it's because of people like you guys, who are willing to explore and find out things beyond what you already know, that made settling in so much easier. It might seem like a small thing... but just the fact that you guys wanted to know more about my culture, about the food there... it just really makes me, as an immigrant, feel accepted here. So thank you very much SORTEDfood :) HAVE A CRACKIN' SUNDAY!

😂 love this episode so much! You guys are well dressed up for Singapore national day now. Fun fact(?) : In some hawker stalls in Singapore, they blitz pineapple into their satay sauce! And sadly that culture of counting your skewers after you are done, is gone. You order the amount of sticks you want, and you get that amount. You can however count the sticks of your pal, and judge them :P
Also I don't know if anyone refer to white people in Singapore as John, but we definitely refer to them as 'Ang moh'. Which directly translates to red hair 😂

    • @oliviaantonette5647
      @oliviaantonette5647 7 років тому +5

SuperPearlyn ang mohs were referred to as johns a long time ago! Which was when roti John was first created. The grated pineapple is also a Chinese style.

Hey SORTED crew, I know from previous comments you said you might do a Malaysia themed week; but I suggest you do Malaysian Laksa theme week later! Because Malaysia has many types of Laksa from different city or state. Like Laksa Sarawak, Laksa Penang, Laksam, Laksa Johor, Laksa Kedah, and Laksa Katong (which is Singaporean Laksa). I think there are other type of Laksa in Malaysia but your Malaysian fans can help you with the list ;) what do you think guys?
Ps. Anthony Bourdain has came twice to Sarawak and came for Laksa Sarawak again because he loves it. I read an article that he suggest Laksa Sarawak in his Top 10 Wish List for his food market in NYC.

I actually truly love that he went with the Roti John because it's a local delicacy that's often overlooked by foreigners or tourists when they think about Singaporean food. Everybody always goes for the chili crab, which I've personally had only once in my lifetime here as a 22 year old true blue native Singaporean. The Roti John on the other hand is a staple of our night markets and food bazaars and is widely enjoyed all the time! Kudos for that, eh!

Someone should have made mee pok or fishball noodles or char siew rice!! Satay definitely is 2 times bigger than usual (but that doesn't matter) i just wonder how your peanut sauce tastes because it looks so different from the one's from singapore!

Lior Lim Mike forgot the sambal that goes into the peanut sauce, as pointed out by the editor. That's why his peanut sauce is so pale and looks so off!

Ben's got it spot on. After a night of drinking or even working, us singaporeans head for supper (some roti john and more) at prata shops that are open through the night.

i binge watch this channel all day, yall need to make more content like I fully understand that good quality content takes time, and yall cant do the insane amount of cooking you do on a daily basis, but some interesting filler content between main cooking shows could really do the channel some good, cause we all know more content means more views, which means more clicks on ads. keep up the good work. (yall need to do a road trip, and do battles for things you can make during the trip)

I'm a Singaporean and huge fan of Sorted food! So happy there was a Singapore battle! But if you want to be closer to the original recipes:
    1. Roti John is not made seperately, you fry the egg and then u add the bun right on top of it and leave it till the egg cooks into an omelette! Once u remove the bread, the egg should stick onto the bread.
    2. Im not a fan of satay but many Singaporeans would say that the sauce is the most crucial! And the most important ingredient is too little....Peanutss!! Loads of them!!! Add more!
    3. The laksa seemed a little closer to the Penang (Malaysian) version. A more singaporean one would have a lot of coconut milk with extremely orange milky colour. And it must taste rich!
Hope my comment will be reviewed because this are my heartfelt tips! I may not be fully right because I'm no chef but I'm a foodie! :D

Because Jamie's the only one that I could eat (nut allergy), he gets my vote! (I know, he uses peanut oil but that can easily be substituted with any other one without too much impact to the taste)

    (and hilarious)
edit: now that i'm thinking abt it, they could've sung the national anthem to be more patriotic

I would love if you guys did like a soup battle, because I really love soup and your battles always give me great ideas.
Alternately you could do Stew, which is also great.
Another thing I'd love to see is if you guys could do something for summer Like the Ultimate No Bake dessert battle so I don't have to use my stove or something. it also might be cool if you did more themes based around different countries and their cuisine because this was great.

I have to tell you guys that, after watching your videos from the oldest, and I’m still binging them after 6, or 7 weeks, to less old, I have asked my now good buddy ChatGPT for the recipes for curry powder, and Chinese 5 spice, and have made them both. They smell amazing. I can’t wait to make a chicken curry as my husband, and I have no idea what that tastes like. Thanks for inspiring me.
