I guess he's not comfortable accepting gifts. I know some people like that.
Same with me. I'm uncomfortable when receiving any kind of gifts. There was one time a girl gave me a box of cookies and chocolates that she made herself in front of many of our classmates and I didn't know how to react, so my reaction was lackluster. She thought I didn't like the gift so her eyes started to well up. I said sorry immediately afterwards ofc. I really appreciated the gift, I just didn't know what to do.
It's not that he's trying to be terrible. It's that gift exchanges are stressful. I'd rather just have dinner with people than have to figure out what they might want or enjoy. I have honestly cried over the stress of Christmas gift giving and buying. Next year I'm only buying for close friends and family.
