Soooo, what they said is that this is an important crop, just behind walnuts and cherries, and they want to make a panic decision now that would harm the bees that they will need in the spring to pollinate the walnuts and cherries. I’m not a psychic, but I foresee that if they are granted an emergency use authorization, we will see this same panic story next spring screaming about the decimated bee population and how it is decimating the walnut and cherry crops. Please start studying regenerative agriculture. I had to, and am now grateful that I did.

@@GregLakatosChradm No, no one is lying. I have bags of tomatoes in my freezer grown with no pesticides. There are farmers that grow with no pesticides. There could be more of them but corporate agriculture takes the cheap way out. There are some pros to that, it has allowed the US to have relatively inexpensive produce, compared to other places. It has allowed that produce to reach millions of people. It has allowed us the luxury of turning our noses up food and whine "I don't like that".
At the same time, those poisons have a lot of collateral damage by killing the very insect we need to actually pollinate those tomatoes. You don't have tomatoes without them. Those pesticides get into our food chain, and into our bodies in trace amounts that stay out bodies forever as long as we live. They help in some cases to determine how long we live and what we die from.
Oh, and if you are going to call someone a liar, have your fact check ready.
Next year you will see a huge decline in the honeybee population with the potential of not being able to pollinate fruiting trees and such

It's doubtful there are any honey bees in the tomato fields. Honey bees are an expense to the grower. Tomato plants are self-pollinating so there's no reason for bees to be there.
Well this is what happens with monocultures grown year after year in the same area. The neonics were the control for this pest and with lack of application, the pest just had a population explosion. I wonder what the origin of the pest is.

Yep, dump another pesticide into the environment. No repercussions at all. Wonder if that poison will be in the tomatoes we eat? At least some people will still be able to make money. Wonder what the continued decline of honeybees and other beneficial insects will have on all the other food crops we rely on pollinators for?
Farmers should have to label these products as containing these pesticides in big letters if they want this to go through... At the very least! Consumers have a right to know!!!
There are catastrophic crop losses across the Globe. Monoculture does not work and never will work. Please grow some food. If you live in an apartment, you can grow with the sunlight coming in the windows, just grow something. The food situation is far more catastrophic than what you are hearing on the news. I lost everything but a few tomatoes and I put out probably 2,000 seeds this year.

Planting other crops or using dog hair doesn’t help ? I haven’t noticed leafhoppers this year and I actually planted tomatoes. I hope they come up with natural ways to keep pests away. I don’t like using anything to harmful to insure none of the bees and butterflies get hurt.

Bees have nearly disappeared from my city over the past few years, as have butterflies. I used to have so many visit my flowers and especially my lavender, and a neighbor had hives and harvested honey. Now there are almost no honeybees, very few bumble bees, but still quite a few hornets. It is scary. Surely there is an alternative that is not going to take out more bees and endanger agriculture in general?

I've recently seen those bugs in Washington, I think they're new to the area. I have lived here for 68 years, and never seen them here before.
The beet leaf hopper is endemic to America. It's always been here. Nothing new they used to grow fine tomatoes without the sprays but honeybees are dying from neonictinoids because they get into the plants systems, even the nectar in the flowers. The chemical mafia made this news ad for support.

Without bees there won’t be any tomatoes growing at all unless they intend to hand pollinate all those fields.
If they would transition to regenerative farming they can combat disease and most pests without using toxic chemicals on our food. But it cost money and would likely impact profits for a few crops before they would see a surplus again. But it's worth doing and I believe they are subsidized anyway, so they should be investing in newer and healthy ways we now know about in how to grow our food. This is another area of old ways that we need to move on from, for a safer, healthy place for us to live.
I get leaf hopper damage in my small garden and pull several plants every year. This would be devastating to commercial growers. I’ll never use a neonic though.

Prices will rise as much as sellers can get away with NOT the amount needed to compensate the losses because for a business to succeed, it must show with clear math to investors that it has competitive margins. Tomatoes already rival the price of steak at times. Coffee is cheaper than creamer and gas rivals the price of milk per gallon. How and why this obvious imbalance of price according to value you ask...because they can and so they do. Why all goods and services aren't priced according to value is because they're priced as much as they can get away with because the main function of capitalism is to exploit resources to gain...that's all. There's nothing written into it that forces it to help people, so it helps itself at the people's expense. The government pretends to play the role of people helper but it runs its programs like a business while failing miserably on the taxpayers dime and it never achieves its stated goal.
