  • In January, Prairie Sportsman’s crew visited Peta Barrett, founder of Women's Wilderness Discovery, at her Ely facility where she was leading a workshop on wilderness camping skills and lacing Ojibwe-style snowshoes. The native people designed a shoe with a pointed toe that can part brush when trekking through northern Minnesota’s forests. The traditional snowshoes also work better in deep snow and wilderness than modern aluminum snowshoes, which work best on packed trails.
