I am pleasurably moved by the subtlety and spirituality of the notes of the alto player. That's "Organic Real Jazz" nuances and coloration - NOT for non-jazzicians. Go, Gerald Hayes!
Jean-Phillipe, Sometimes the music doesn't have to be perfect to be appreciated. There are other dimensions to a good performance, like respect and heart.
Jean-Phillipe - I believe there is a difference in 'coloring the pitch' intentionally and playing out of tune. Yes, Coltrane did it, many alto players do it, and tenors as well, hardly hear a bari doing it. If everything was colored 'middle of the road' life would be in black & white....hmmm, I am sure you have something to say about it? I think the alto player is fantastic and have heard many others play way into 'sharpsville' more than him. You're right on Randy...I am digging it!
When it's subtile, I agree with you but when it's quarter tones, sorry but maybe there are ears more sensitive then others... I had a teacher that used to say that if you are the best player but you have a bad sound, nobody is gonna like it but if you don't have "Potter's licks" but a good sound, people will appreciate you much. I totally agree with this teacher. My ears are like that, maybe it's not the same for everybody...
I agree with that. It's just that I'm very sensitive on the pitch and the sound... Believe it or not, it took me years to appreciate Coltrane because I was not digging his sound... I don't like perfection and don't look for it, I even have 2 compositions named "The Beauty of Imperfection". I normally wait impatiently for your videos because I love them and they are my favorite ones on UA-cam but that pitch... One of the first thing I work with my students because it gives me bad chills.
Randy, I normally adore your videos but this one... Al saved it! The pitch on that alto is awful! If it wouldn't have been from Al's few bars, I would have disliked a video of yours for the first time. Not from your amazing video/editing/recording as usual but really from that alto pitch...
😭😭 I will forever miss you ❤granddad
rest in Paradise
Anybody that don't like THIS....needs a STRAIGHT JACKET. Seriously.
Well there is people who like Justin Beaver............And Van Morrison's sax playing.

That is a sweat sound.
Speechless...
I must say I enjoyed Al’s solo best (the 2nd tenor) clean and very reminiscent of Coltrane. All great guys tho.

Jean-Philippe Cote tbh all that matters is that u can let people enjoy the sound of it above everything else
