Great knowledge to share and thank you. We just planted 4 conifer bushes in the ground. They've lived in their homes potss for about 4 years. We also planted 5 thuja occidentalis'smaragd'. I hope to keep learning from you and thanks again.
Should mention, to make sure there’s not any underground utilities(wiring/pipes/septic) underneath your plant or within a few feet around especially since roots spread out and non dwarf conifers can have deep roots
Hi, Does your statement regarding not changing the soil prior to planting apply to all soils? My soil is sandy loam on top with thick, heavy clay underneath. Thank you 😊
Is it ok that some of the roots get cut up and broken while you break up the root ball with a shovel’s metal blade? I feel like the tree wants all its roots intact. Or maybe they’re not as delicate as we think
Yes. Always good to remove pesky soil in sync with the plant roots and replace with a completely different PH water bath. That is sarcasm. Unless it's bonsai loosen the roots so not root bound and plant. And if someone says you will introduce soil pathogens we'll look at the health of the plant and the legitimacy of the nursery you bought it from.
hey brian, youre right it would have been nice to include that! i chose this fat albert because it has a very nice pyramidal shaped, the needles are a lovely blue shade, and my parents had something similar at the house i grew up in.
@@plantvibrations Thanks Devin! I was just wondering why you choose that specific type. I'm think about planting a blue cypress, one that doesn't get very big. So like yourself, Ive been doing some research. Thanks for getting back to me, and keep on planting.
Interesting, my trees seem to be doing pretty well! I was Breaking apart the roots spiraling around the pot, not the central root ball. Is that what you mean? Thanks for sharing your experience
Uh oh , I barely loosen the roots so glad I’m watching this for future plantings .
I was always afraid of harming the roots too much.
Just keep the central ball zone in tact!

Awesome! Glad you got them planted!

Great tip
To check if the root flare is at the right level, it can be helpful to lay a long spar of wood across your dug hole as you work.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing
Good video ❤
Thanks 😁
Great tutorial. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!

It’ll be very important for you to pick a tree suitable for your soil. I’d look into native trees in your region

Is it ok that some of the roots get cut up and broken while you break up the root ball with a shovel’s metal blade? I feel like the tree wants all its roots intact. Or maybe they’re not as delicate as we think
Yeah that’s perfectly ok. Just make sure the main root ball in the center isn’t getting damaged
Do you have an update vid on this spruce? Would love to see if it put out some growth.

Hey Devin, do you recommend epsom salts for conifers if the soil is sandy? Is it ok to do it now, in the fall?
hi! unfortunately i do not have experience gardening in sandy soils so i do not have a solid recommendation. i apologize
@@plantvibrations Thank you for answering anyway :)
Thanks for the information, but why did you choose that specific type?
