Challenge Anneke Orwell Hill July 1991

Challenge Anneka was a British reality programme that aired on BBC1 from 8 September 1989 to 15 October 1995 and was hosted by Anneka Rice.
This is the real story of the episode called "Cambridgeshire Holiday Camp" which was filmed between 25 - 26 July 1991 and aired on 2 November 1991. The camp was constructed in a field (Co-Ords = 52.146506, -0.005343) at Maypole Farm, Orwell, Cambridgeshire. The video was documented by Eastern Electricity and shows a different side to how these shows are put together. The cost to Eastern Electricity alone was into 6 figures as they had to bring electricity to the field. Others brought water, took away waste and so on. In the whole the project cost a lot of companies a lot of money.
In the "two days" of filming, a field was transformed into a fully equipped holiday camp in time for the arrival of many children from "inner city London" who were being treated to the holiday of a lifetime by the charity the Children's Country Holiday Funds.
After the event many became disillusioned in how the program was put together and after the airing even more so as many that gave lots of time and money got hardly any airtime while other "cute" events got many minutes.
The event is filmed over a few days and not two as described. We knew of the event and got prepared many months before it took place. The program gives the impression that companies are rung up and on the spur of the moment donate vast amounts of money or equipment, that is not the case as they all know many months in advance and have agreed what they will donate. The companies that do not donate did not usually get featured.
There are two videos here one is the unofficial one recorded by Eastern Electricity which shows all the work that goes into making an isolated field into a holiday camp and this is followed by the the official BBC broadcast program. You can then see the effort put into this challenge by many people over many months.
After the camp ended the site was soon returned to a field and remains so to this day over 30 years later. Many of the people you see in this video are no longer with us so this is a memorial to them and what they did to bring happiness to others.
