Funny how at first the Chrysler Building used to stick out above everything, and now it's pretty much buried by every building around it.
It is still incredibly tall
Time marches on.
Never Forget the Chrysler Building😔✊🏼
That's basically what's happened to every large building built before the Empire State Building. Most of the time before the Empire State Building was built, the new tallest building wasn't dramatically bigger that the previous one. But, when it was built, it was so insanely tall and wide for its time that it still stands out today.
Iambic Pentameter still there is nothing like it. Classic, like an old friend.
I hate to see that the twins towers were there at one point then they dissapear
*I miss the twin towers so much. I live in Jersey city and every day when I look at the skyline I miss them. Who knew we could miss skyscrapers.*
@@ThomasJr It's sad they are gone but I am glad something was built there. Southern Manhattan looked so empty between 2001 and 2011.
@@dvferyance Still does. Empty voids for all to see.
Thomas JR. i do too
@Olivia Varela
: I remember seeing the Twin Towers being built. I got to visit the construction site when it was just a giant hole in the ground (and was again many years later). I remember what it was like to see those towers when they were brand new and there was nothing else like them.
2016: MetLife Building
1971: PANAM Building
what is PANHAM i was born in 2004
It was an airline, but it went bankrupt in 1991.
bennydelon oh okay thx for telling me
I also misspelled PANAM
@@ohnono3931 Pan American World Airways. went bankrupt in 1991.
I would love to show this video to a New Yorker from the 1930's.
@SEAN PETAIA same
@SEAN PETAIA he means he's gonna show this vid to a 1930's new York that is still alive stupid
@SEAN PETAIA please tell me your joking
@SEAN PETAIA he means hes going to time travel to the 1930s and show it to an yorker
Let's show it to them anyway
That Chrysler Building has seen much.
Lady Liberty's seen more, though.
COLSTER Both has seen 9/11 same with Empire State
It was time for Lady Liberty too leave. She has seen everything.
the statue of liberty also could have "seen" how many workers died or were disabled because of that chrysler building. 2 out of 5 died or were totally disabled while working on the tower... it had no security at all
They've seen France lol
A time where that Metlife building used to be Panam.
Instead of Getalife or The futuristic, oppressive country it's known for.
Wait the metlife building is iconic? I thought it was just there because why not
Most part of the city barely change over the 80 years... Crazy
Zijie Wu just the tall high rises like the twin towers
its amazing seeing the buildings that were there in 1931 that were super tall and stood out but now are surrounded by new buildings the same height and you can barely see the originals anymore
As a former NewYorker of 25 years, i loved NYC History, this video is just mesmerizing and the music was fitting. I was sad to see the video end. Thank you for making this.
Why did you leave?
@@kalipsicao790 I lived in Queens for 25 years up until 2012 due to the rising rents and the effects of the "Great Recession" still lasting well after it was over. The effects caused everyone to be a penny pincher, nobody was hiring, nobody wanted to spend, jobs were cutting people to save. Even with two jobs i barely was able to pay rent and afford a unlimited MetroCard, i was living off cup noodles to survive. Just before 2012, my rent was going to be higher, so i just packed and moved out of New York. I really do miss the city, its borough's, Coney Island amusement park, and all of the different types of foods from so many nationality's and the NYC Pizza / Clone-Menu Chinese food joints. The only way i keep up with my surrounding former area's of NYC is the updated google maps street view.
Excellent concept and presentation, James! The visual and audio are seamless, providing an experience that is enjoyable on both an educational and artistic level!
I have spent, or maybe wasted, thousands of hours of my life on UA-cam and this is by far the best thing I have ever seen.
2:26 thats like a moment when you realise your own mortality. Even you are only fleeting and have a beginning and an end.
the sheer brass to build the tallest building in the world at the time not once, but twice.
miss those twins
Amazing. What a truly incredible and resilient city.
man shout out to you on this vid. I felt like I was in a time machine, amazing work.
When it was fast forwarding the South View and I just saw the Twin Towers disappear I almost teared up omg

1827 - 1920
Hahahhaa
This particular video is personal for me since both my grandparents were iron workers when first arriving from Newfoundland,Canada in the early 1920’s.
In fact most of you might be familiar with the photograph of ironworkers on a beam during lunch while building Rockefeller Center in 1932.My grandfather John Lewis was the one sitting with his head turned to his right second to last viewing left to right. There are others with my Dad and uncle working on the World Trade Center as well,so many emerging now I’m only just discovering.
Awesome. My ex grandfather was up on that beam too they have a blown up view of the photo of them having lunch in their house
Who’s just been watching one building the whole time to see how long it would stand?

I kept my eyes on the metlife biulding

Please do a change over time in the Las Vegas strip?
Now that is a good one.

Showing the evolution of the Las Vegas stip, a giant, tacky, disney-esque nightmare does not compare to viewing the evolution of a great city such as New York!!!

This video is great! Now I know what New York City looked like back then! Thank you! ♥️
This is probably the best video I have seen on UA-cam for a long while
The WTC- was 100% pure NYC... Well at least we still have the Empire State Building!!!
Gary Allen don’t Jinx it
And the Chrysler Building. The two original staples of NYC.
Don’t you dare
@HearthCricket yeah they were ugly buildings. Still, extremely sad to see them go as well as the people who lost there lives.

Chrysler Building has always been my favorite!! Love these videos! Thank you!
Pleased to have been able to supply the "one small step for man" 1969 photo. Taken just before that step.
I am a survivor from the 89th floor. And 9/11 will happen again not soon but later. I will never forget the firefighters running up the stairs and the expression on there face was we are never going to get out of these buildings alive. And the people that knew they where going to die. The picture in my mind of me and people I didn’t even know all holding hands and walking in the street crying and calling loved ones there had to be about 20 people people just grabbed each other and just walked no where to go just walked we walked 10 blocks to we all hugged and said good bye and one lady said thank you all for walking with me I just lost my husband and my oldest son! This day will never be forgotten
Loved the background music that went with the "time travel". I wish I could go back in time before NYC started resembling the movie set of a science fiction "space opera". The city must have been more inviting when just a few towers (with interesting architecture) were there, when it was largely brownstones, and beautiful mansions. Now NYC is just overwhelming, dark and scary.
I've never been although it's ok the to see list
James Fox - thanks bro, beautiful work! keep making those videos! cheers from Canada.
Chrysler building: im so tall!
Empire stats building: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH NOONONONON HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!

This is absolutely fascinating and i’m stunned to see how New York looked 86 years ago.
This is wonderful. New york seems more attractive in the 80s than now.
Actually, New York was very dirty and dangerous in the 80’s. Very disorganized it started to cleanup in the 90’s and progressively got better until 9/11. From then on it cleaned up its act in a steady fast fashion as it was shaken to the very core. It is wonderfully beautiful today with many high rise projects underway and planned.
Idaho fokusz
TCar dying city?
because liberals didn't ruin the city back then
There's a reason the movie Escape from New York was made in the 80s, because that's what people thought of the future of the city. It's much better now.
I can remember our teacher from PS.78 telling us on our field trip Manhattan is an island and at one time was a swamp before they built the skyline
Ultrainstinct Goku they were swampy islands
@Ultrainstinct Goku
: The entire Financial District was built on swampland and dredged-up dirt used as infill. Battery Park in lower Manhattan (southern tip) is built primarily on dredged-up dirt and sand.
Stunning work, and music is simply magic. Thanks for sharing. Love from France
It's like a simcity soundtrack.
Yes indeed :D

New York has always been way ahead of its time. I'm sure up until the 1940s-1950s around 90-95% of all skyscrapers in the world were in both NYC and Chicago only.

Very interesting and imaginative video. I wonder if somehow, someone could start from 200 years ago and show a time lapse of those same views in a continuous progression.

@Pog luis that was a year ago, I was just a 15 yr old trying to get attention.
Nicely done. This was cool
5:49 nice view!
One of few cities that apparently just keeps getting better!
at 2:57 i was looking at the building (the third building in the very front) that building was there for years :0
My main takeaway from watching this is that, at least since 1931, New York City has been a dense metropolis with barely an inch of free land. Over the course of these decades, it has merely replace some of the older buildings with taller buildings. This is an awesome video, though.
I feel haunted during the transititon from 2004 to 1996
whats that tallest building 7:28
The building that guy is working on is the Empire State Building while it was being constructed. Every time this video shows a photo from 1931 it's a view off of the under-construction Empire State Building, because it was the tallest building in the world at the time.
I really love New York City
Watching this in 2021 makes me miss these old times in New York the first time I went there now I am 15 I was 11 when I went

Hi, James Fox. Can you make an updated version of ‘New York: A Journey Through Time’, same for ‘San Francisco: A Journey Through Time’ because my father originated from there and see the changes in the skyline through the years. Can you also make ‘Singapore: A Journey Through Time’ because I live here and I want to see the changes through time from like Raffles period to current day?
