    I retired from a large West coast city not long ago, but one of the best things about the job was (some of) my coworkers, some of whom were from other nations all over the world. One guy named Mike, or as we came to call him Uganda Mike, was one of the more interesting people I worked with. He had spent a few years growing up there as his father was a civil servant in the Ugandan government during Idi Amin's despotic rule. Mike talked with the most quaint British accent and he told me several stories when I asked what it was like living there. Basically all I remember was that everyone he knew took great care to stay far, far away from any sort of political activity or even talk about it and to even mention the name of Idi Amin, was thought to bring much bad ju-ju and just an undesirable thing in general. If Amin liked you, he'd reward you lavishly. But Amin could turn against you at a moment's notice, and Uganda Mike said several of his friend's fathers simply disappeared with no explanation, never to be seen again!

      @BigGamer9211 Рік тому

      Yes, your also over fantasizing the events. What I got from it is ultimately what he wanted, was power and control of the region to be in the hands of the indigenous ethnic groups of the region. Hence his expulsion of the largely Indian Asian population. And when he was met with resistance, well, he fired back with increasing vigor. The main cause of his failure was the fact that he couldn't maintain the economy that was set up by largely western influences, that the people had come to be dependent on, and so the economy went into a tailspin. Thats when things went downhill and increasing aggression surmounted.@@global001

    A few things that come to mind re this video:
    The idea that african colonies of european powers are artificial constructs with no tribal/ethnic considerations: well so were the european powers: only the fact that Great Britain is an island makes any political sense for a country to exist. Like France, Belgium, Germany and Italy, it started as a random group of different "tribes" who united in the 19yh century or earlier as one nation. Before europeans entered africa, the various tribes/ethnic groups present were engaged in attempted domination of each other, so nothing new there after colonisation; after all, slaves were available for sale from the 1st time european ships made landfall in certain african coasts, implying that enslavery of weaker tribes by stronger ones was an established way of life already in africa.
    Idi amin was never prosecuted for mass murder; well neither were Josef Stalin or Chairman Mao, to name but two.
    Idi Amin's government was initially supported by Britain and Israel, well US Government supported Saddam Hussein vs Iran and Afghani warlords vs USSR. It happens. Many times it goes pear-shaped, but, hindsight is always 20-20

    • @puraLusa
      @puraLusa 2 роки тому +6

      Well written.
      Yes, the tribal locations should have been better analized when de-colonizing.
      If you observe a map of african devided along tribal lines it would be a very different africa, insted of 52 country there would be 1000.
      But the problem isn't tribal but the fact these countries are big and rich meaning absolute central power is very appetizing. Add that to a population without a tradition of politics and literacy and it's a recipe for disaster.

    President Gaddafi, Rest in peace. You loved Africa and kept the colonials out. Libya has never been the same without you. The brotherhood of other parts of Africa and Libya/North Africa was severely damaged after your wrongful death; a manipulation just like what happened to Patrice Lumumba of Congo.
    Amin refused to be a puppet of the West, so was villainized in the media. When the British were using him as a soldier to suppress uprisings of Africans against them brutally they did not complain. If he committed atrocities in Uganda but it favored the West, they would have turned a blind eye. Do they really love Africans so much that they were concerned Africans were suffering? No. They got concerned because he was not the puppet they thought he was going to be. They welcomed him when he came in with a coup pushing Obote out because they thought they could use him.
    How brutal was slavery of Africans from the West? Or , King Leopold of Belgium who bled the Congo etc? Amin loved Africa. No amount of media propaganda can blind Africans
