Metal Method's Doug Marks explains effective practice techniques for guitar. This is part 2 of the series. Part 1 can be found here: • How to Practice Guitar...
Thank you for the great information. I purchased Metal Method in 1983-84. I made incredible progress with your lessons. Used to show off playing Eruption for my high school friends LOL . You are an excellent teacher. I still tweak with my guitars, but I am bit rusty. This may motivate me to get back on track ;)
Great hearing from you. My students from the early 80s are my favorite. You guys supported my effort from the beginning. That included hearing your opinion and it wasn't as easy as commenting on a video. My first students had to write me a letter to ask questions... and many did.
thank you doug .. you have really encouraged me to take the next step .. i always wanted to learn how to play guitar but never knew how to get started .. God bless
Great video Doug! It's nice to hear the perspective of another elder gent on here. I'm in my 50's now and after playing bass for 40 odd years I started learning drums too a couple of years ago and now I'm learning piano. I've found that you're never too old to learn something new and the joy it gives me is even better than when I was younger as I understand and appreciate the process of learning so much more now.
Hey Ant. Yeah, never too old to learn. I feel that I'm making much faster progress than I would have when I was a teen. Reason is, so much more available information and technology. I have all of my Drum Grooves in Guitar Pro which is ideal for looping and such.
Love your videos, just rediscovered you and like hearing about you besides the guitar stuff. Takes me back to the 90s when I first got your lessons. Rock on👍
I watched last weeks video and have been implementing the suggestions in my routine….I have found that playing with too much emphasis on the Conscious is like trying to fall down the stairs the same way twice….you have to be automatic, and let the sub conscious take over….Which takes lots of practice….I embarked on a new journey a few years ago, which is painting with an airbrush…it’s a lot like learning to play guitar…You have to develop a lot of muscle memory and sub conscious movements…..in the end,it’s pretty amazing what we all can do if we put in the time and effort..
Hi Scott. Glad that it's working for you. The process is quite simple but so much more effective than relying too much on trying to "think your way through parts." Much more musical sounding too. Interesting about air brush. When I first started Metal Method 40 years ago one of the first things I needed to do was buy a computer and learn how to program a database. If ever there's something that you would think is ideal for the conscious mind it's programming. I learned that my subconscious began doing all the work. Stuff would come together as if by magic without thought. Plus, my best ideas seem to pop out of nowhere.
@@DougMarks it’s taken me years to figure that out…I didn’t know what to call it before your video….I noticed for years that I could learn a song note for note, and even though I was playing it right,it didn’t have the same feel….Some people call it Swing…THAT’S the subconscious part….I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s guitar playing, drums, airbrush,or computer programming, the principle is the same…Thanks so much for your insight!!
unique aspect of guitarists.. have large personal guitar collection they drag around and switch to their special guitars for special songs unique aspect of drummers.. have to play other people's arbitrary drum setups without complaints or adjustments. strange, right? it's like if playing golf meant switching to some random other person's golf bag at different holes.
Yes, there are situations where a drummer might need to play a kit that's not their own. Usually when playing in a professional (as in paid) situation that's not the case.

Great Kent. It all comes down to making daily practice a habit.
