      I think if Melissa wanted to expand her point of Minimalism leading to clutter/trash created for other people that would be interesting. A somewhat related point could be how when people try being more low waste, they buy these new functional things like how Melissa said environmental minimalism treats things BUT they rarely do what Melissa did and *use what they already have* instead o buying something new and getting rid of their current stuff.

      Part of my maximalism is recognizing that physical things are important to me, and they make me happy. However, if I keep things to enjoy them, I need to keep the things I enjoy and find ways of making them practical to enjoy. For example, I have special sentimental items from my relatives. If I keep them because they are meaningful to me and bring me joy, I need to make them accessible for that purpose. So, I made shadow box displays of them. My husband had kept his favorite magazine cover art pieces, so we framed them and put them up. We organized the things that make us happy. 🤩

But it is a bit confusing that basic normal activities that our mums taught us (don't be wasteful, don't be messy, don't buy unnecessary things, stop looking at your phone and talk to your family...) have been rebranded as minimalism. My mum also taught me to hoard things and keep hold of things. She's like "are you sure you want to get rid of this?" and I don't think that's very useful either. Naturally you're going to evolve and buy new things for the evolving person you are and the old things don't serve you anymore. Also if you buy less things, for the few new things you do buy, you can perhaps afford more expensive things and EXPERIENCES without breaking the bank. In this very materialistic modern world, I think it is important to reign it back in and to remind people of the simpler ways of life

      The problem with doing what your mother told you means you keep the old blanket your great grandmother knitted, you have a second set of plates that only ever get used for guests 5 times a year, you have a ton of old plastic ice cream tubs with too few lids, you have old gray socks that were part of your school uniform which you never wear, you have a TV and a computer monitor both that are both streaming the exact same Netflix account, you buy milk in giant containers that always go sour before its used up and you have your grandmother's sisters husbands son from the first marriage on Facebook, but haven't seen them since 2007. Just get rid of it all. Then buy yourself actually super comfortable expensive shoes you can wear every day for the next 7 years and throw out the ones with the loose sole.

      (I have tl;dr version at bottom of desired.)
      For one thing, not every mother teaches their child those things. I am living with my parents for the time being and my mother gets mad at me for turning a light off that I don't need when she will be in that room later and will want the light on. I try to conserve energy where I can, so I turn off lights in favor of using sunlight, but she and my dad will leave the living room and kitchen lights on all day because they'll use those lights later. Even worse, my boyfriend's entire family just leaves lights on everywhere even if they only use the light once during the day. He was never taught to conserve energy (not be wasteful), so he wastes it all the time. I only do it because I was taught that in school, but not my mother.
      Another thing is that not everything taught by one's mother sticks. Another anecdote of mine is that my mother used to always get into me for not eating food she bought, especially when I asked her to do so. It wasn't until I got a job and I had to start buying my own groceries that I realized just how wasteful that really was. Plus, as a child, my room was always messy. In attempts to teach me to be cleaner, my mother acted like a drill sergeant when it came to the cleanliness of my room. Now I have a core belief that cleaning is bad because I was grounded until my room was clean, and every single scrap of yarn, grass, and what have you had to be picked up before I was no longer grounded. My brain thinks cleaning = grounded and grounded = no fun whatsoever, so, by some math law I don't remember, cleaning = no fun whatsoever. It took personal experience and new perspectives for me to realize that it's actually really bad to have a messy environment. What me mother taught me, though, actually made me messier.
      Tl;dr version, I guess: A mother's teachings aren't always well-received, and sometimes a mother won't teach the things in the video or other basics. As such, sometimes a person has to learn something on their own for it to stick or for them to know it in the first place.

It's easy to cherry-pick some parts of your experience and say "oh this other thing is nothing new"---I don't need to lecture Medlife Crisis of all people on cognitive biases ;) But also minimalism is an extremely vague word that can encompass everything from reducing social media use to "zero-waste" lifestyles (scare quotes only because I haven't looked into it).

      The trick is to do one pig purge, assign everything left a specific spot, and forever more stick to the one item into a spot, one item removed rule, which amounts to replace (and upgrade) instead of add. If you are like me, and you create a budget and shopping list and also buy basically everything on the debit card, then you have three overlapping lists of basically everything coming in already compiled for you (itemised transaction bank statements on your banking app) - for everything non-perishable/consumable/comestible on the list, one thing should go to Craigslist, charity or the bin. If you arent comfortable getting rid of something immediately, put all your "maybe get rid of, unsure" stuff in a plastic container in the garage next to the bin, with the date on, and if you don't find a legitimate reason to remove the item from the container for six weeks - three months, you probably won't need it again in six months to a year, and if you do need it again in six months, it's financially worth it to borrow or rent the item for the one or two days instead of keeping it unused for another year.
      The second rule is ignore, beg, borrow, rent, recycle and replace first, then add.
      Maybe make a list of things you use most frequently and how often you are physically in contact with that item and prioritise upgrading that as high as your budget allows, first:
      Statistically you are in contact with your face, hair, teeth, hands and body, bed's mattress, cushions, bed, cover, your underwear, socks, shoes, couch, chair, car-chair, computer mouse, keyboard, cellphone, glasses, piercings, wallet, keys, eating utensils, bathroom fittings, other clothes most often, so any upgrade there will probably have the largest quality of life improvements on a minor annoyance you have to deal with per hour basis.
      Similarly, your cellphone and pc desktop, email inbox, browser homepage, the top of your feed on your social media account of choice get seen most often, so any tweak which removes junk from here saves you probably at least 200 clicks/taps a day.
      And for every ten pieces of disposable junk you don't buy, you have to empty your bin one time less.
      But remember, it's only an upgrade if all of a similar item you own/use is of the same highest quality of any of them, so get rid of the old spares you are only going to use in - honestly - never.

    I think you really hit the nail with being more intentional with our time. Minimalism isn’t about removing everything, it’s about intentionally buying things you need and not things you want because “ooo shiny”. It’s about making making the right decisions in the long term. We won’t see it’s immediate benefits, but we see it over time. It’s like meditation. The benefits of clearing your mind and being able to only focus on the present dont show through until making it a habit.

    • @spring7643

      Exactly, minimalism is halting our meaningless consumption and becoming mindful about purchases that aren't basic necessities.

    • @Orynae
      @Orynae 3 роки тому +15

      To be honest, I really do not have the mental energy to be intentional about everything that I do. That sounds exhausting, I'd just overthink everything even more than I already do. However, I can kinda see how if I physically decluttered my space, that could remove some of the background noise sitting in the back my mind (like "when am I gonna clean my room" or "I'm running out of space on my phone").

    • @fangirlfangirling
      @fangirlfangirling 3 роки тому +8

      @@Orynae Oh definitely, meticulously controlling every second of life is emotionally and mentally exhausting. That sounds like hell. I see being intentional more as acknowledging a flaw, starting small, and working up to a lifestyle that makes you feel more fulfilled. It’s not an all-or-nothing approach to life. It’s about the small decisions you make over time that adds up.
      Cgp Grey has a video about New Years resolutions/building better habits that talks about this. (The title is ‘your theme’) If you have time, I think it’s very much worth watching :)

    • @blumoogle2901
      @blumoogle2901 3 роки тому +10

      @@Orynae The funny thing about minimalism is that it's not supposed to be a huge, constant, daily grind. It's supposed to be easy, unconscious habit. Just get a box, in the garage, anything that annoys you, is inconvenient, in your way, ugly, uncomfortable or irritating in your normal day-to-day gets thrown in the box - out of sight, out of mind. Then in a few months, if you haven't needed to take something out of the box in all that time, just get rid of it permanently. Just compulsively throw everything away, as you go. If you need something again then you can deliberately remove it from the bin. No need to get decision fatigue, one size fits all - throw away. Everything left in the bin after a while is automatically junk in your life, no need to sort, deliberate and weigh options. It's automatic.
      Make a folder on your desktop, if some app or file gets in your way, drag and drop it in there. The recycling bin works. Then you can delete it in a few months without even opening it to sort it - you didn't need it for how long? You probably never will. Delete. For photos it works the opposite way - if you open it, look at it, etc, often - put it in a special folder. In six months you select all - delete everything that's not in that special folder, no sorting neccessary.

    I'm not a huge fan of aesthetic minimalism. Removing everything from your space that doesn't serve a practical purpose ignores the fact that filling your space with beautiful art that reflects who you are can bring you joy. Yeah, a cluttered space can be bad for your mental health, but it's not shallow to want to have pretty things, just like it's not shallow to want to listen to beautiful music.

    • @themothman3726

      Well then your in luck. Minimalism doesn't have an end all be all, some may like a clear space but if you don't then your minimalism can be sleek and artsy. The key to minimalism is that it is minimal enough for the individual.

      Here's the thing, "[having] beautiful art that reflects who you are can bring you joy" is a practical purpose, it's a form of mental self care. The key within that is not having so much that it no longer fulfills that purpose.

      @Schizmatizmify 3 роки тому +38

      For me the idea of minimalism doesn't mean taking everything away, it means taking away things that are unnecessary or distracting. In this case it would mean that an art piece that really resonates or is important to you will have the space to, I guess spread its wings. I think it's easier to take in the impact of something if it's surrounded by less, otherwise it gets lost in the noise of everything else and doesn't have space to breathe. So in essence it's less about removing things from a space, and more about being deliberate about what you add.

    I think the key is not to do it for one day and to combine them. To be aware of what you buy before you buy it is a mix of environmental minimalism and then that leads to aesthetic minimalism. The money you save because you’re not buying left and right gives you the funds to buy experiences and not having as much in your house to clean or maintain gives you the time and space for mindfulness. It’s not a fad, it’s a full lifestyle change and takes time to adjust.

The intent of decluttering is to fully face the mountain of stuff you already have, rid yourself of whatever is excessive (ethically, if possible), and come away from that experience a wiser, more careful consumer. There's not much to be done about the things you have already consumed, but practicing minimalism can teach you how to avoid buying and creating that level of trash in the future.

    LOVE what you said about making it someone else's problem! There are so many people that just throw everything away every few months and patt themselves on the back for being minimalist. The point of minimalism is to get to a place where you can properly care for yourself and your belongings so you won't need to buy more stuff. The goal is to slow the steady stream of stuff into a trickle.if you are not buying a lot you will get rid of less and if you get rid of less you have more time to do things like think about the proper way to deal with what you're getting rid of.

    totally agree about ... well, the physical aspect of minimalism, the part they don't tell you - that you really need to plan how to dis-pose (etymologically, relocate, or in the legal sense, "the action of distributing or transferring property or money to someone") of the stuff you're clearing out. I can't just "close my eyes and take everything to the curb," as my elderly dad did when overwhelmed by the prospect of reducing 30 years in a three-bedroom house with a basement, garage, and two attics to a two-bedroom condo, and it makes me crazy thinking of the cool stuff he must have filled trash bags with. taking a cue from the hoarding reality shows, i go for reduce-reuse-repurpose-recycle, but then what kind of recycling? so much stuff is perfectly nice, and has value, that it's tempting to put it into a yard sale, but doing a yard sale well is a whole big thing of its own ... although there's always freecycle or craigslist. tl;dr, it just takes a lot of research, planning, and work to environmentally minimize, and that's where i get stuck.

Not cluttering it with unnecessary plastic figures, posters, postcards that ultimately don't mean anything to me, I just had them lying around. But I've always kept so much stuff that now, I just don't know how to get rid of it and where to put it at. Right now it's all in a big moving box, dusting as I'm being too unfocused to get them out OR give unnecessary stuff away. This sucks. And this video showed me that it would take way more willpower to actually do something about the problem. So maybe I should start with an attitude training instead xD

Some people like working online and at home and some people are more social online. Maybe they have digital therapy events that they check into or maybe they have friends that they care about that they can only see online, or even love interests. I am speaking from experience because my mom used to take away all my technology due to low grades and I'd get so sad because I wouldn't get to see my friends anymore. The point is. Sometimes screen time is benefficial and essential to mental health, and sometimes having a good sleep cycle actually hurts your mental health more than losing sleep over somebody

    really enjoyed seeing the minimalism movement deciphered.
    I wanted to be a minimalist for a long time, I even got to the point where my whole wardrobe was completely black (so everything goes together. Also monochrome wardrobes are cool and valid but not for me. I want to dress all black one day and completely colouful the next), but I never could part with my books, even the ones I wasn't sure I'd ever read, because those things give me joy. I wouldn't let go of my diaries that I started when I was, uff, eleven years old? because, well, memories. I also used to have a penpal and jeez the letters take up a lot of space. But I can't part with them. Also, when you have a creative hobby like, anything art related, chances are you'll have lots of supplied. I got into sewing and watercolour during lockdown and you need space for the stuff. Blank walls and black and white rooms aren't my aesthetic either. I want to see one single minimalist video in which the space the person lives in is completely earth toned. Or colourful as hell. Sorry for the rant, I usethe core priciples of minimalism every day, but my place will never look like a hardcore bauhaus flat because that would absolutely not make me happy...

    As someone who's been decluttering her life for a few years now, great job! I don't think I'm a minimalist, but my former mother in law would disagree. To answer your question on what to do with the stuff you get rid of: Sell it or donate it if it's still in good condition. If it's not in good shape anymore, you partially solved the issue by turning your t-shirts in to bees wax wrappers. Find a way to re-use it.
    When you *want* to purchase new items, ask yourself: Do I NEED it or want it? Ask yourself how many items of clothing you need. Do you need the latest cellphone? Do you need the latest purse? Honestly, I've found pants with pockets in the front, combined with a phone case that holds my credit card, so I no longer need a purse. Holy smokes, the relief of being rid of a big bag that only contained my phone and wallet.

    Dunno, doesn't seem to me that environmental minimalism and aesthetic minimalism are inherently connected? They don't necessarily contradict each other sure. But the more environmentally minimalist thing you could've done with those tshirts is wear them until they fall apart, then fix them, and THEN turn them into bees wax wraps. I'd guess that on average not decluttering is more environmentally friendly, cause in many cases you end up buying a new thing to replace the one you decluttered, and obvs if you throw it away that's one more thing in the landfill that could've gotten some use. They _are_ related in that I guess in both you're encouraged to not buy a whole lot of new *stuff* that you don't need. But in aesthetic minimalism you could get brand new curtains every year (in varying shades of minimalist designs), which would absolutely clash with environmental minimalism. (For that one it'd probably be best to get some used ones that may or may not have a busy 80ies pattern lol)

    While I like the idea of minimalism, there's something about spaces like Casey Neistat's studio which feel like they contain more character. Those spaces are sooo the opposite of minimalism, but are more conducive to productivity in my opinion. I try to imitate those spaces in my life, and live in a way that best expresses my character. A last year I covered my whole wall in pages of doodles that I had drawn during lectures for example. Lately, I've had a queue of post-it notes on my wall that have my todos in order of the days I plan to have them done by. Since they are post-its, I can easily move them around as priorities change and it acts as a good schedule. They are also very satisfying to rip off and throw out as I complete my goals.

    A thing about minimalism too, that there's a seperation from it because like you said it reduces self expression.
    This I think is why mostly only incredibly wealthy people are able to "sustain" a minimalist lifestyle. Because a great majority of wealthy people are able to rotate through a catalogue of stuff they are more or less offered just for one or two showings, not always even keeping those items. Most celebrities are walking clothes racks, that's it, a presentation and they simply don't have that intensity of "what if I need this" that most other people have.
    There's been some interesting articles I've seen over the years on how the boom of industrialized markets made things more available for people to acquire things which them steemed into Maximallism. People regularly either put sentiment to the things they acquire or refuse to part with them because they recognize still whatever effort it took them to get the thing in the first place, even if it was just 20 bucks when they were very young and made significantly less money. There's attachments that form and with that it all gets tied into self expression to distinguish ourselves to not be another one within the dozen, so really minimalism can feel incredibly limiting.
    I find the movements interesting, but honestly don't see it very sustainable personally for a full and happy lifestyle. Not unless you completely detach your social bracket from being an influence on you.

      I'm not wealthy and I'm a minimalist. For me minimalism is stopping meaningless consumption and becoming mindful about purchases that aren't basic necessities.

    The types of minimalism I love and practice most + why , in descending order:
    1. Experiential minimalism: I can walk my dog in nature & breathe fresh air
    2. Environmental minimalism: my carbon footprint will be smaller because I adopted minimalism
    3. Digital minimalism: social media can be in the background and my real relationships in the foreground
    4. Mindful minimalism: slowing down --> more content in my day to day + more patient with others
    5. Aesthetic minimalism: assuming the best sense of the word, having a clean environment for remote school

    I hoard everything so I definitely couldn't throw things away. So what I do is just only buy stuff I need and make a birthday and Christmas list so I don't get gifts that I won't use and won't get rid of

    Experientialism is interesting for me because I can’t remember anything so I collect little objects from countless memories to remember them. I thought everyone did that?
