I know this video is damn near a decade old but it is the best buyers guide to opal i have seen yet! Great job explaining and showing examples👌 This video would give anyone more confidence when venturing out to buy their dream opal and i really appreciate the information
An opal with pinfire pattern can have 5/5 color. Here we assess a stones brightness under a variety of light sources but the most common and the benchmark is natural daylight with the light falling directly on the face of the stone.
Well, that was a very helpful video, thanks. It's been a min you've been on here... and still going hard with it producing the best videos I think online...
Love this! I’m new to the channel. I have been watching all of your newer videos and I’ve been really confused when you talk about brightness and body tone. I’m so glad I found this video because now I completely understand. Very well explained!
Thanks so much Justin for an excellent explanation and demonstration of opal bodytone and opal brightness...it was very instructive and hopefully will help guide my future opal purchases! Cheers!
Very informative! So glad you've been doing this for as long as you have! I now know my black crystal opal is at least an N7 or an N8 grade. Keep up the good work!
This may be an old video, but the info. is fantastic! I appreciate both you & your Dad's passion for opals. Great point regarding computer screen calibration,,and to add to this, if you tilt your screen a mm it also changes the view!! Thanks so much
This body tone measurement process is interesting. It reminds me of some material I studied in college (interior architecture > lighting design) which involved lessons about lumens and different lighting fixture color profiles. Very cool. So, I have an idea. What if you took some rough/scrap potch; arrange 9 pieces with different body tones to represent the N1-N9 scale; cut and polish those potch scraps; then mount them to a nice block of wood and use that as a scale or prop for demos? Wouldn’t that be cool? I bet you have enough scrap potch lying around to put the pieces together into a sweet opal body tone array. And hey, that could be a fun video as well. Just don’t forget to credit yours truly for submitting such outstandingly creative suggestions (ha)! Cool video. I’m a fan. ✌️😎👍
@blackopaldirect: Hello! I have a question about the brightness..Does it depends also on how much colour is in the opal? Can a pinfire opal with some potch in between also be a 5 of5? Which light source do i have to use to judge the brightness? So the less i had to move the opal to see the colour fire, the more bright it is?
Justin i bought an opal 225 carats... I cant tell if its been smoked or us chocolate opal .. seller said its from Welo but it doesn't absorb water AT all.. (all my others ones do) its VERY DARK brown inside .. but the flashes inside are incredible REDS blues .. theres a clear yellow colorbar covering over it all it as well ! It came in 1 piece. Seller packed it in sand and OIL and it had a crack (I'm sure she knew) . Now its in 3 pieces..I'd like to send u a few photos or make a short clip .. I believe w my limited experience this was mined in NEVADA actually . It matches some stones I've seen come out of there .its a very intriguing 3 pieces lol not sure what to do w them tho. Or what they REALLY are or where it came from.. sigh. I think k it might be worth alot more than I paid ... it might not.. its dark in the sun but the flashes are throughout and its very thick like an inch deep ... its very cool but I can't figure out exactly what it is.
Would photographing the stone in black and white - next to the scale (in the same photo) help to identify the tone? It's hard to determine on the mid-tones. Will this help? I understand tone because I am an artist, but sometimes it is confusing with certain colors. By brightness, do you mean the vibrancy of the color? Thanks for the lesson!
Justin.....how does the body tone, brightness etc effect the value.....say in percentages...and what is the most important factor? how much does each drop in body tone or brightness effect the value. and are the differences in value between an N1 and N2 the same as an N6 and N9
It does depend on the patterns the color types and combinations. Avery difficult question to answer. But N1 to N2 is literally no difference at all. They are both very dark and hard to tell appart
This is very clear explanation! I have been following his IG, excellent stones. Btw may I know, is there a correlation in general between bodytone and value, eg N1 is more expensive or N9 is more expensive? I know there are many other factors, but what bodytone is generally accepted as more valuable?
There is never a need unless it has play of color. The unpolished back also helps the jeweller when setting to grip. Once hidden it matters not :-) You can polish the backs if you like. I have never needed to in 60 years of our business being alive
I don't see whats so difficult about understanding body tone shades, BTW i think your "N1" was actually an N2, cuz ive seen much darker than that,...i stand corrected

And you explained beautifully! That was completely clear and precise. Thanks Justin!

More top instruction - thanks, Justin.

By the end of the video I was guessing the body tone before you said it. Fantastic video. Thanks!
Ear To The Ground awesome 👏
great video, helps a lot with understanding the bodytone and brightness scaling
Excellent video Justin, you did an excellent job on this one, Thank you, ...Dana.

Hi Dana I am glad you like thank you! :-)
Thank you so much for your explanations. Very interesting. Now I understand and recognize which one I prefer! Johqnne Deschenes from Quebec, Canada.

Very clear and helpful. Thanks!
dose the brightness and body tone affect the price if so how much??
GREAT JOB THANKS JUSTIN
very nicely explained, thanks!
Excellent lesson sir
This stone looks like it has a layer of gray on top of it. 6:15 Could you grind it off to make the color more apparent?

Very interesting. Thank you..
Exelent video
Thank you very helpful
Could you do a video going step by step on determining the value of a stone?
Thanks
I would love to be able to but opal has so many variables that it would be impossible to tell in a video
Very informative…thanks!
i no longer feel like a calf looking @ a new gate on this matter. Thank's for the explanation.

Thank u!
So where does the body tone come from? I know black is because of carbon but what about white and clear body tone
Thanks

By brightness, do you mean the vibrancy of the color?
Thanks for the lesson!
It depends on the exposure and lightning. I don’t think it would be accurate enough with possible glare of the polish as well.
Yes I'm like Opal light

N1 to N4 is the same if the colours are the same
@@blackopaldirect thank you again, helpful information!
Are you going to Tucson this year, if so how do I find you?
WHAT ABOUT WITH BOULDER OPAL???
What about a transparent opal what tone is it?
It does depend the tint darkness of the opal even if it is clear. But they usually sit around N6 to N8
Thanks for your response Black Opal Direct
I wouls like you to explained values of doublet opals,:)
A doublet opal should be around 10% of the value of a solid opal
Hello- Ron from S.A.--why is it that you dont polish the back 0f your polished opals-??
