First off, this was filmed in October, 2019... way before the virus stuff. We traveled to the last Blockbuster Video that's located in Bend, Oregon!! The sights, sounds, and smells of their old stomping grounds was like something else. A flash from the past, where you would always go every Friday night to get the newest movie releases, hottest games, or obscure b-movie rentals. Sadly, Blockbuster's 9,000 world-wide locations dwindled down to just one. But, that comes with everything turning digital... or with movies just slapped into the Red Box at your local grocery store. Regardless, the Last Blockbuster in Bend is a tribute to anyone who lived in the 90s, especially with their museum section and classic memorabilia everywhere. Thanks to the owner Sandi for allowing us to film in the store! And, sorry that our audio isn't the best, the store is very active!!
The same thing happens here in the Ireland with our version called Xtra-Vision. Sadly the last one ever closed in 2021 at the height of Covid. This Blockbuster should be preserved as a historic look into video and dvd renting.
I used to work at one of the last Blockbuster locations in San Diego, we would pop popcorn in the store specifically to make the whole store smell of it for when customers walk in and enjoy.
If you were to tell someone back in the 90’s that there would only be one remaining Blockbuster location, and that it would be a tourist attraction, they’d probably look at you like you have three heads.
Seriously...circa 1993, I wouldn't have fathomed it. It's not like alternatives to VHS were anywhere on the horizon. And they would be PACKED on Friday nights.
Last time I want to a Blockbuster was about 2010 I'd say, I rented Casino Royale and The Dark Knight for my dad, he never got a chance to return them, it was closed less than a week later, he still owns them to this day, at least they were both great movies and not Doom Annihilation, lol
Remember hiw netflix became big and blockbuster tired to copy them with the added bonus of being able to drive 15 min to return the movie for another one if you wanted to. Tbh, its counterintuitive since the point of netflix is you dont have to go anywhere. Their only real competition is redbox but i dont know anyone who uses redbox.
Oh thank god I thought you were about to say your dad was killed in a car accident while returning the movies to Blockbuster and crashed into the store thank god lol hope he’s still doing alright
Having a movie night used to be an event. 1. Gather your crew / family 2. Go to Blockbuster and pick your rentals 3. Go to the local supermarket for popcorn , snacks and beverages 4. Drive home watch your rentals and enjoy snacks! 5. No phones, texting and no talking just pure enjoyment man i miss those times
Yea man I’m glad we got to experience that. I was old enough to remember it all. Even remember going late on a Friday and not getting the new release because they were all gone. Sometimes you would have to wait weeks to rent it.
@@Master-dk3pu no, it's not. Actually touching the boxes and the act of walking is a big improvement, despite the instant access and massive library of Netflix. Netflix is an action. Blockbuster (and other video stores) are a journey.

@TrashPanda Raccoon Uhhh not entirely true, I was a nerd and the guys who kicked my asses were Democrats, I know that because their fathers were on the local city council and they were Democrats and they campaigned for their fathers in our high school.
You know, I get so nostalgic for the 80s, but you're right. The 90s was the best decade. The glory days of the internet where we all had to teach ourselves html and everything was new and excited. Before social media came and took the fun out of everything.
Agreed , it was like in the 90’s we had the perfect amount of technology , still had internet an chat rooms , games online (PC) no cell phones , but pagers 🤣.... just not like today it’s overkill , and like you said things were just more simple .
@@Dappydoo sound like a bunch of old folks!! But for real, 90s were the best. Even the 2000s and early 2010s were alright. But it's been really fucking weird lately and 2020s sucks especially big nuts.
5:28 I remember as a kid ALWAYS seeing Appleseed walking through the store. Never rented it. Then one day years after the Blockbuster by me closed I remembered and watched it online. That was the beginning of my now-in-the-past anime watching career. Good times.
My blockbuster had that same anime and I rented it. Three of us watched it together and it was a fun anime to watch as a 12yr old. I had an unrestricted blockbuster card (the only one among us who had it) so I could rent 'r' movies and 'm' games xD
I'd rent all of the Pokemon direct-to-video movies and watch them out of order so I didn't know what the hell was going on 😂 Also robotech and _the_ transformers movie
Whenever I was home sick from school, my mom would always go rent me a game and a movie from Blockbuster. I'd always try to drag out an extra sick day to play video games. Good times.
It's a bit sad that the newer generations will never get to experience that feeling of excitement walking into Blockbuster and just roaming through the aisles or even renting out a movie and/or game and then dropping it in the return slot only to repeat the cycle again for another thing to rent. It's a feeling that can't be fulfilled by the streaming services we have today.
Don't forget this was their decision. Blockbuster had a chance to buy Netflix outright during their infancy, it failed to adapt to Redbox and Streaming services. The consumer will almost always vote for the most convenient solution to their entertainment and blockbuster just lagged behind.
@@mr.randomguys7629 I am super confused how they would fuck up a Doom movie, what was wrong with it? I would assume making one with a similar to the plot of Aliens would be easy to make and not terrible.
It should just be an ultra fast shootemup with demons in space and hell. John wick proved that dialogue and plot is not needed in a good action movie even in this plot heavy era of filmmaking.
The 90s and early 2000s were the best. The balance between actual physical activity and technology was just perfect, it all got ruined when the corporations went full greedy.
At one point, we had four Blockbusters (and two Hollywood Videos) within a five-mile radius of home, but they all started to vanish one by one during the mid-2000's. Thanks for taking us along on this nostalgic trip, James.
3:58 I've only ever rented video games from Blockbuster, then used their mail-in Total Access service in their final year. Knowing I could rent and return games via mail and their store for $5 less than what Gamefly could do is only a memory now
I recall visiting my grandmother in Bend years ago and I vividly remember coming to this specific Blockbuster to rent out movies to watch. Wasnt there a Sonic that was nearby as well? Because I remember going to grab a bite to eat from there whenever we'd come here.
@@songohan3321 Oh trust me I know. That's why I made sure to say that those jokes will be made. "For the lulz" isn't said anymore, but basically people will do anything "for the lulz".
Oh, man. How I miss running home from school, making sure all my homework was done so my parents could take me to a blockbuster and rent movies and Sega games...... *sigh*
and after they turned it down, they started their own service similar to netflix, and it was actually set to outperform netflix, but the person that was pushing for the idea was replaced. The guy who replaced him didn't like him so out of spite he shut down the program, saying it didn't make enough money (even though it was on track to). If it wasn't for him blockbuster might still be around (more than 1 location)
When I was a kid I lived in a small town, and I remember there was a bit of a hubbub about Blockbuster opening a location there. That commercial you played took me way back.
I still remember the grand opening of one of our Blockbusters in Lancaster, PA. Must have been 1990-91, and they had costumed characters of the Blockbuster mascots like the dog Paws/Pause.
THANK YOU! I knew there was one in Alaska...but I guess it closed. I was looking in the comments for something about Alaska just to see if I was or was not crazy.
Man I used to have a blockbuster near my house, unfortunately it was closed down on April 18th 2010. I really loved that video store, and I still have movies that I bought from there.
I think the one by me closed down right around the same time. I miss going there. I still remember going to it when I was pretty little (I think I was 4 or 5) with my dad because they were doing a huge sale to get rid of their old stock of SNES and N64 cartridges. We went home with a bag full of games and I think we still have them all to this day.
Once when I was living in London, I would take a walk every night in the streets with my friend, and there was this Blockbuster store with illuminated letters, but the lights on the B, U and S letters had gone out. My friend and I used to joke that ‘the bus is gone.’
I like that you actually rented something, thus even in a small way making it worth the store's time to have 4 guys walking around filming. There are other channels that would have just gone in, got the footage, and jetted off.
I gotta say having lived through the era I can't say I ever really missed Blockbuster when everything went to streaming.. Late fees Popular movies out of stock. Back then you had to get to the store super early on the day of a big movie release.. Having to drive to the store.. I love that you can get everything so easy now...
Anyone remembered that back in the day when Pokemon Snap came out, you had to go to Blockbuster to print out your pictures from the N64 kiosk/display? Man, those were the days.
@@Helicopter7 There was even a Pokemon Snap Contest that Blockbuster promoted. The winner of the contest, who took the best pictures, will win a trip to Australia for a Safari adventure and Pokemon related items, like Pokemon Yellow, a Gameboy, and others.

God I miss the 90s so much. Such simpler times. We will never get to relive that greatness again. sad
The 80s were bleak. The 90s were just something special. The early 2000s were ok. It’s gone to shit since.

I remember as a kid ALWAYS seeing Appleseed walking through the store.
I'd rent all of the Pokemon direct-to-video movies and watch them out of order so I didn't know what the hell was going on 😂
Also robotech and _the_ transformers movie
I used to see Fist of the North Star 1986 movie there but I never rented it. Years later the series has become my favorite anime.
Whenever I was home sick from school, my mom would always go rent me a game and a movie from Blockbuster. I'd always try to drag out an extra sick day to play video games. Good times.
My father was several fans of video-clubs in the '90s. He passed away last September. He bought me a lot of VHS movies. Good times bro good times.
and good parenting. I had to wash my dad's car to rent games on weekends (which was fair)
It's a bit sad that the newer generations will never get to experience that feeling of excitement walking into Blockbuster and just roaming through the aisles or even renting out a movie and/or game and then dropping it in the return slot only to repeat the cycle again for another thing to rent. It's a feeling that can't be fulfilled by the streaming services we have today.
its weird to have something that was such a big part of your childhood just evaporate into nothing in a few years
Jay Villain i miss blockbuster.
Don't forget this was their decision. Blockbuster had a chance to buy Netflix outright during their infancy, it failed to adapt to Redbox and Streaming services. The consumer will almost always vote for the most convenient solution to their entertainment and blockbuster just lagged behind.
Thank Netflix
Amazing that we hold our old traditions so close to our hearts that simply returning a movie is an event.

@@mr.randomguys7629 I am super confused how they would fuck up a Doom movie, what was wrong with it? I would assume making one with a similar to the plot of Aliens would be easy to make and not terrible.
popo129 it would be terrible if it was a similar plot to aliens. It would always be known as that aliens rip off movie lol
It should just be an ultra fast shootemup with demons in space and hell. John wick proved that dialogue and plot is not needed in a good action movie even in this plot heavy era of filmmaking.

Hollywood Videos was better.
The 90s and early 2000s were the best.
The balance between actual physical activity and technology was just perfect, it all got ruined when the corporations went full greedy.
