Porsche Cayman GT4 MR: A Manual GT4 RS? | Catchpole on Carfection

  • The GT4 RS is a spectacular car but it does have its flaws. For starters, it’s very difficult to get hold of one and for all its engagement, it just lacked a manual transmission. This is RPM Technik’s solution: The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 MR.
    If you haven’t already seen Henry’s road trip of the GT4 RS you should head over here: • Porsche 718 Cayman GT4...
    How has RPM Technik improved on the already fantastic GT4? Here’s how:
    - MR kit by Manthey-Racing
    - Upgraded brakes
    - New exhaust
    - Shorter ratios for the MANUAL gearbox
    Why are the shorter ratios in the manual gearbox a much welcomed modification?
    Because the standard GT4’s ratios are so tall that the gears rarely need changing. So rarely, that you could reach motorway speeds in second gear! This may sound convenient if you don’t like rowing your own gears but those that buy the manuals want more engagement so it defeats the point. To Porsche’s credit, the lofty ratios are more of a workaround to the ever stricter emissions regulations.
    If you’ve never hear of Manthey-Racing, they have been responsible for running Works Porsche Motorsport GT teams since 2013. Porsche now owns 51% of the company, so these road car upgrades have the blessing of the Stuttgart mothership.

      As much as I like the Cayman and the idea of performance upgrades: In the end you spend a ton of money on making your Cayman faster. However, you have to face the fact that there will always be someone who is quicker. Always. You might as well go for a more powerful, faster car to begin with. Which will, inevitably take you to the point to find that there is yet another car that is quicker. It is just terrible. Better leave it as it is and spend the money on something else. Driver training, maybe

      @@fritzbrause6332 I think the Cayman platform is about a lot more than just putting up numbers and being faster than other cars. It’s an amazing platform that accentuates all of the ‘feels’ of a great sports car. You could potentially have a 4.5L cayman for roughly the same money as a 997 or 991 GT3 and it would be arguably a better driving experience. The platform can handle the power and remain balanced.

    If you want you can dial the KW3 shocks to a more street oriented setup without any problem - all by yourself! It may even be more comfortable than the GT4 standard setup because KW shocks work very good with short impulses (which is the "high speed" setting in the dampers - has nothing to do with the speed of the car). And if you go to the track just redial it to the recommended Manthey setting. Shouldn't require more than 15 minutes for all four wheels.

    Put the numbers to one side for a moment. 911's have become too large imo. Put a 992 next to a 997 and it really shows how bulky and oversized 911's have become. Yes you get more grip/traction due to larger wider wheels, but our roads have not become any wider nor have our parking spaces. Also the 992's are a lot heavier than previous 911's. So for me, since the 992's first came out, it's now the Boxsters and Caymans that are more appealing, as firstly I think they look better than the 992's, but also are more driver orientated and more 'sporty'
    The options that Porsche offer for the Cayman/Boxster are really impressive imo. Can't afford a GT4 or a Boxster Spyder? No worries, get yourself a 4.0L Cayman GTS or a Boxster T. Even the die hard 911 enthusiasts must be a little more drawn to the Cayman/Boxster cars now than they used to be?

    The Gear ratios in Porsches have always been to high. Second gear at 80+mph is just ridiculous and a 100+ in third is faintly to high. I've driven 996GT3 and found it crazy that an N/A car needed be driven constantly in second gear down a Country Lane.
    I know it's an expensive upgrade, for a ratio change but it's probably the best modification. It'll certainly feel faster throughout the rev range and more involving with more gear changes and heel and toe and a bigger rush to the redline. RPM need to do this to the rest of Porsches models.

    • @georgecarlin2097
      @georgecarlin2097 2 роки тому +1

      Porsche gearing IS unreasonably tall. I cannot for the life of me figure out the logic behind this consistent application either. Fuel mileage/emissions maybe? Drivability aimed to please the non-enthusiast that so commonly buys these cars? Leaving extra performance room for upgrades (to GT 2/3/4, RS, turbo models etc., or even aftermarket like this example)? Some combination of these, possibly combined with other factors? Who knows.
      I will say that a few years back when I traded a Porsche for a Z51 Corvette (both were 6-speeds), the gearing on the Corvette was *even taller*! Not by a super wide margin, but certainly noticeable.
      That said, although shorter gearing would have benefited either tremendously, the Corvette was able to adapt to and overcome this unreasonably lazy gearing due mainly to its monster low-end torque and ultra flat power band.
      The vette was objectively far better suited, even with its substantially lower redline.
      It is worth mentioning that both the ease and cost of switching out rear end gear sets is far lower for Corvette owners. The varying options available to the aftermarket consumer are far greater as well. This price and availability discrepency is to be expected; Corvette vs Porsche aftrmarket tax (as silly high as the vette tax is as compared to, say, literally identical parts for Camaros (ex: $300-400 vs $1,050-1350 for exact same Borla exhaust/X-pipe. Only differences being minor such as bracket/mounting locations)
      (I later had a Z06 that shortened this up a tad, but I still considered it to be far too tall. From 3.42 to 3.73 iirc. Ended up expiramenting with, aside from aforementioned 3.42 and 3.73 (along with some limited city driving in auto Corvettes with both the ultra tall standard, as well as "performance" 3.13 ratios): 3.90, 4.10, 4.11, and even a 4.56 which was my favorite.
      The 4.56, as short as it sounds, felt ideal to me. The T-56 and TR-6060 6-speed manuals used in C5/C6 Corvettes and Camaros had very tall gears in and of itself; 3 of those 6 gears were overdrive! (4th is a perfect 1:1, with 6th being 0.5:1).
      In my modded 02' Z06, I was able to not only maintain decent drivability (no annoyingly frequent shifts or low rev bucking), but ultimately hit an independently verified 212 mph (factory cars top out in 5th at recline, as 6th is far too tall to pull further. Factory C5 targas do 175; 6th on its own is only good for 130-140 or so. Increasing top speed beyond this requires either taller final drive to make 5th stretch further, or a shortening that is aggressive enough for 6th to actually continue pulling. Ideally you want to be at or near peak horsepower rpm when approaching drag limited top speed (obviously increasing your rev limit fuel shutoff will increase top speed when redline is the limiting factor. Power moss such as h/c/I and supporting additions such as a trunion kit, as well as professional tune, are highly recommended) I chose this, to 7,350, as well as the latter of the aforementioned options)
      Still got 25, or even 30+ mpg on the highway when cruising. Also got rid of that pesky GM skip shift feature that forces a 1-4 shift under roughly 2,000 rpm.
      (Eventually switched to a Ford 9" rear end due to GM's 8.8" being notoriously weak in high power applications. Just in case you were wondering about the discrepency w/ differentials)
      If you think that is a bummer consider this: Most C and C Corvettes were sold with an automatic 4 speed paired with 2.73 final drive ratios! A buddy of mine had a C5 A4; 1st was good for like 70, and it reminded me so much of the old powerglides folks transplanted into heavy, yet powerful early 70's muscle cars.

    • @kabob21
      @kabob21 2 роки тому +1

      Blame fuel economy/emissions regulations. You can fine tune an automatic gearbox to meet those regulations but not so with a manual gearbox since the driver does his own shifting. The only way Porsche can keep the manual gearbox around is to make the gear ratios tall to keep the revs down.

      @@idokwatcher2062 stroked original, either the 981 3.8 or 718 4.0, makes 560hp. Bore goes from 102mm to 108mm, Mahle racing pistons, Carrillo connecting rods, and a crankshaft from the 991-generation 911's flat-six are added to increase stroke.

      This means that with the 4.5L its got 560hp, 438lbft (at least 100lbft more that stock) and with new gearing goes to 75mph in 2nd and 103mph in 3rd.

    I have modified my 981GT4 with all of these enhancements and do a lot of track days. Mine has 435bhp which also helps bring it closer to the RS which Porsche would not sell to me. The major advantage of the Surface Transform discs over PCCB's (Standard on my car) is the longevity of Pagid RSC1 pads. Three trackdays with PCCB's and ten trackdays with the ST's. I have now resurfaced my ST's for the first time ... they needed it after 50 trackdays. I would have gone through approximately five sets of steels in that time and the PCCB's ? All I can say is that on my previous Cayman R the PCCB's lasted 30,000 miles ... yuugh.
