I live in Zephyrhills and what the builders and city councils are doing to this part of Florida are ruining it. Way too many transplants.

It’s amazing the amount of growth in Zephyrhills. I live in the Tampa area buy my stepdad lived in Zephyrhills when my mom met him in the early 80s so I’ve been familiar with it since then.
Back then, you never really had to worry about traffic and it had such a great small-town feel.
Over the last several years, it’s amazing the amount of new construction for homes and new communities that have popped up.
Seeing Festival Park, a place I have fond memories of going to car shows & swap meets to and a couple of Livestock concerts to turn into a huge subdivision is sad.
Downtown still has a charm to it but the traffic is terrible. I have an uncle that lives right across from the old Zephyr Egg plant that has lived there since the mid-to-late 80s and he’s ready to move somewhere less busy and congested.
He’s been looking towards Homasassa Springs which I think is a great area of the state. Things haven’t got too congested there….. yet.
I think Brooksville is beginning to see an influx of new people and housing and of course Wesley Chapel is absolutely bonkers already.
Getting back to Zephyrhills, you’d think with all the growth, they’d actually start paving the dirt roads they still have there. From what my stepdad used to say, they had always talked about doing that since he moved there but still haven’t. I guess they do add some charm though.

I couldn’t agree more! I didn’t even know we had this one and I don’t live terribly far away from it.
Now that I know it’s there, I’m definitely going to visit and take a train ride.
I rode on another historic train that even had a steam engine on a trip to North Carolina back around 2001 and loved it! I’d love to go on another one.
I’m so happy this is practically in my backyard. I wish I knew about it sooner.

Awesome video! Every time I ride the train between Parrish and Willow I see the development coming closer and closer; about ten years ago this was all wilderness. When I work the train I sometimes show my passengers while we’re underway that this is the real Florida of yesteryear. It’s sad to see all this wilderness being replaced by development.

  • @ELAlcoRS3

Thank you for the video. Over the years (besides the NE corridor and commuter rail) I've ridden on many tourist railroads I enjoyed. We rode on this over 5 years ago with family and didn't return because I thought it was unsafe. We ran about 10-15 mph and the train swayed side to side so much I thought we'd derail. We found it stressful and not relaxing. It wasn't fun at all, crawling along, feeling like the car was going to fall over. I felt lucky to get off without incident. . Looking at this video they've improved track conditions and speed except for a few places like 6:20 for instance. Since it appears better we may give it another try sometime. It's certainly pretty except for the development and if I remember the un-filmed solar farm. Historically when homeowners sue RRs they loose. The RR was there long before those homes and it's up to the builder and all real estate agents to disclose that. Don't buy near RR tracks (or airports) if you don't want the noise! I don't think this is too bad (horn wise) with one grade crossing (unless they build more for development). They used to offer a cab ride and/or an experience to drive a locomotive with supervision (probably for a few hundred dollars). That might be cool.

I want to thank you for making this video. I live in the Tampa area and had no idea this was nearby.
Many years ago, a friend and I took a scenic ride on a train with a steam engine on a trip to North Carolina and we both really loved it.
Now that I know this is nearby, I’ve got to go and take a ride.
Btw, this isn’t exactly in the Tampa area but it’s within an easy drive of Tampa. Parrish is in Northern Manatee County which is the next county south of Hillsborough County where Tampa is. It’s probably about an hour or so from downtown Tampa.
Thanks again for sharing this. BTW, if you make it down that way again and like seafood, check out Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Ellenton. Ellenton should be pretty close to Parrish, it’s right of the interstate and Anna Maria Oyster Bar is right off the exit and has excellent seafood and drinks.

I saw this sadness in November. I’ve moved down here from Long Island in 2015. I first went to the Railroad in 2016. When I went again in November I was like this is bad.especially talking to the dedicated volunteers I’m like NIMBYs are already screaming them with rail trail talks. Meanwhile if the community actually cared grants would be secured to finish the new museum and restore the bridge. Id hate to see this great line to be like the Catskill Mountain Railroad. Rail trails kill so much infrastructure. Especially in a small town that’s bordered by the suburbs, that’s the saddest part!

That railroad turned Florida into a snowbird destination in the 1800's and connects allot of how the west coast grew. Ringling being a showman of the extraordinary, and the railroad put Sarasota on the map. He hired the freaks, weird, and outcasts, the bearded lady, sword swallower, midgets and giants and in exchange for their act, the performers had a loving family that they never had at Ringling. The circus was a wildly successful and the new train made more tourism to Sarasota easy and touring his circus by rail was the only way back then. Some local people hated Ringling and his happy circus of freaks and animals and set it on fire, trying to end the Ringling circus. However Ringling and cast refused to let the circus die. Before it all shut down. Seeing the children performers in the "Sailors Circus" tent was more breathtaking than the adult circus.
