    He only lived to be 28 years old. The news of Heath Ledger's death spread like wildfire. The first major Hollywood star to have died so young in the age of the Internet, his death deeply touched all of Hollywood as well as fans around the world. But Heath Ledger was a reluctant celebrity, a star that didn't really want to be one. By opting to play character roles in small films and declining major offers such as the leading role in "Spiderman", he deliberately made "unwise" choices and risked his career on several occasions. He was far more interested in the serious art of acting than in becoming famous as a Hollywood superstar.
    The film traces Heath Ledger's evolution from the young Australian actor, who very early on displayed an enormous gift for acting, to the complex character actor he became, revealing above all an as yet unknown side to this multitalented actor: Beside his work as an actor, Heath Ledger was also a very talented photographer, created collages and produced innovative music videos. Film clips from Heath Ledger's films as well as interviews with his early school day friends, fellow artists from the film industry such as Terry Gilliam, and especially Heath Ledger's father paint a very personal picture of the century talent Heath Ledger.

    On the last page of he diary, Heath wrote "Goodbye". It was probably an on-going thing until the very last day of shooting when they wrapped it up and he probably keep piling on writing some more in his diary. The goodbye wasn't because he's ready to perform as a Joker, was probably after he finished performing as The Joker and he wrote sort of a goodbye to himself and the character but little did he know that it would go on to be a haunting send-off.

    Not only have I seen his lines from _The Dark Knight_ handwritten by Heath Ledger himself, I kept noticing these three words "fish being gutted" appearing in some of the cutout pieces of paragraphs. I wonder how that did for his role. This is really brilliant stuff.

  • @alice-pd9kg
    @alice-pd9kg 8 років тому +38

    For everyone who wants to read the diary: just pause the video and make it full screen. Than you can see what heath wrote down there. It's his part of the dialog from the film. I guess we was playing with the pronounciation, that's why he underlined some of the words. Very interesting to see this because these are the words he's articulating with a special accentuation in the movie.
    Also interesting to see that he wrote down the line "Like my mother always told me, when your(sic!) good at something don't do it for free" (0:15) which is missing before he says in the movie during the mob scene" If you're good at something never do it for free", which could be a hint that his mother was probably a prostitute.
    It is kind of hilarious that Heath Ledgers Joker thinks "BRUNCH!" is funny. And it is when you really think about it :D But the rest of the list is disturbing

    Heath's performance as the Joker was hands down one of the greatest performances of all time, in my opinion. He was magnetic in that role, and I doubt anyone will ever be able to top it. What's sad is that he was really just starting to show that he was capable of reaching that upper echelon of modern actors, amongst Day-Lewis, Christian Bale, Fassbender, and a few others. That being said, I do think with Jared Leto (another one of those guys in the upper echelon), the role is in good hands. And just keep in mind that when Heath was originally cast, people thought it was insane and it was going to be awful. Actually, if I remember correctly, the negative reaction for Heath was as bad or worse than it is for Leto, so that's something to think about as well. Moral of the story: don't judge things before actually giving it a shot. RIP Heath Ledger!

    Some people think there's relevance between his death and his playing Joker; I disagree with the idea.
    If Heath Ledger's playing the sociopathic villein Joker affected him and led him to eventually die, then every actor playing the similar role of sociopathic killer should be affected as well.
    He's a great actor and he privately suffered from depression. That's it.

    I can't believe people blame this on "method acting". I don't think a role like the Joker can take you to such depths unless there is already an issue with your inner self... The "bye bye" thing looks to me like he farewelled the movie and character, not life itself... Ledger had just walked into a really big film for the first time, the things he saw production-wise amazed him the same as it would amaze me being in a production just like "Brokeback Mountain" as I ve never seen a Hollywood production up close. His character was pretty badass, he did a good job and he was thrilled, I understand that. It's amazing what people do to idolise someone or make money off of his death, family included. The poor guy had problems, it's obvious, I don't know what kind of problems exactly, but he had. If he was so much destroyed trying to understand the Joker, what can be said about Philip Seymour Hoffman and the parts he played? Instead, Hoffman is remembered as an unlucky junkie and Ledger is this "so immersed to his work actor". To this day, I still can't understand why there was all this "thing" about Ledger's death, even awarding him an Oscar, something that I believe would never have happened if he was alive. Thinking that he died after making a Batman film, just makes me feel this whole thing wrong. Jeez, it was just a Batman film, not some real story drama film about some crazy guy. The Joker is a fictional character, he's not someone you can read about his hideous crimes and then try to "be" him for your role, which I understand would be very "soul consuming". It looks like someone made a pretty good job in idolising him and make him not look like a junkie or a "drug person" in general. Hoffman, Jackson, Elvis, Cobain didn't have such luck. I guess they prefer a supposed suicide due to method acting than "oops, he overdosed", which is, in my opinion, the sad truth. What could be taken into account though, is that movies like Nolan's Batman need you up and ready all the time, like Dan Aykroyd using cocaine on the set of Blues Brothers when they had all night long filming. He was lucky he didn't develop a habit, he just did it for what it was, something to help him stay awake at work and with quick reflexes. Those movies often leave you with those habits, it was not the role, it was the 20 hour a day schedule probably. It's amazing what they make you do when they are paying in seven figure numbers. It's like they' re buying you. "Don't want the money mr. Ledger? It's ok, I know a bunch of others who do, including Jack Nicholson"... Poor guy...

    i think people are looking into the clockwork orange influence abit too much, the joker is a sociopathic character and alex from CO is one of the most famous literary symbols of violence for violences sake - i like the comparison personally, ironically humanises the joker from the cartoon adaptat

    Eminem Called It!!! The Joker killed Ledger and left (no) suicide note with his handwriting!!! Jack Nicholson got lucky that he didn't go nuts when he played the role and Mark Hamill only got to do the voice-over (still shocked BTW).
