    The fact, that his kids wasn't aware that he was one of the iconic rugby players of his era, shows what a humble and genuine man he is, had the honour of meeting him, Sella, Bunce Fitzpatrick, Benazi, Blanco and a few other greats of the amateur era, great memories of 95.

    • @moosa9850
      @moosa9850 2 роки тому +4

      @@peterferan4389 Amateur era for me was a different kind of passion, players played for the badge, their country, their family, tours didn't happen as frequently as today, Sella first player to have reached a century test matches, gained 111 caps in 13 years btw 1982 and 1995, today players get 100 test matches over a weekend and it's not really something celebrated, because it's more about revenue and not the achievements of players, a bit like gladiators, expendable, just my opinion.

      most guys get to that age and all they can talk about is what they did in their youth, how great they were, maybe because it was the time they felt at their best. this guy, was actually the captain of england and has never even mentioned it to his kids?!!!
      he was always a class act, and this just proves he hasn't changed despite his age and his lifestyle change.

    Kiwi here, I couldn't stand this guy back in the day, my interpretation was he was arrogant and epitomised everything I despised about English rugby. Now here he is. relaxed and humble and comes across as an outstanding person. It just shows me how the media build these narratives that are greatly removed from reality. Cheers to you Will Carling. ( As an aside, If I despised anyone in the opposition it really meant that I respected their rugby prowess)

    As a New Zealander living just down the road from Twickenham during the 1991 World Cup it was great to watch this video. The quick raise of the eyebrows that Frank Bunce gave Will Carling after the tackle has always been very common in NZ, especially amongst Maori people and is a polite way to acknowledge another person without words when passing in the street for instance. I find Will Carlings nod as a response typically English and it's great to hear his insight on those great games. Thankyou for the video.

      I think you have to remember that there's a) media framing of any captain's responses and b) you're looking at a vast amount of countries that all look at England with a slightly jaundiced eye due to the whole business with the empire. Basically something could be said in high spirits and in jest and you can guarantee that anyone who is not English will more often than not take that the wrong way especially in the context of sport. It's only natural.

    I believe that Caleb Clarke found out that his dad, Eroni, was an All Black at about the age of 12 when he was at school looking through a book of former ab's. Caleb was a breakthrough star last year for AB;s against Australia, but chose to follow 7's to Olympics so has not played this year. Will be competing next year against Jordan, Reece, Ioane and possibly ex league star Tuivasa-Sheck for a wing spot, so I have no idea how they will sort that lot out. Will Carling seems a nice fella, good interview.

    Too funny. I was showing this to my wife, also a rugby player, and she laughed because on the wall behind me is a life size cut out of Will Carling missing the tackle on Jonah, who was on his way to introduce himself to Mike Catt.

    Finally thank you will for saying English men and their passion is regarded as arrogance, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve smiled for my team to win and others just say oh why can’t you be humble in victory! Dude why can’t others be humble in defeat, I’m a truly passionate England supporter but feel hated by all those around us, good! We’re the northern hemisphere team to beat! Come at us!

      You didn’t win the six nations, the world rankings are dominated at the top by Sanzaar, even if you WERE the team to beat, it wouldn’t say much

      Do you even check how many we’ve won? Wales are the only other country that’s even close to the same wins of the six nations and if you think the south hemisphere is going to reign on top with that mindset you’ll be even more surprised once it’s snatched from underneath you and we welcome the hard fight ahead 😁🏉

      As a loyal All Blacks supporter since 2003,
      The top North hemisphere teams sucks at Rugby World Cups tho & youse guys just win 1 RWC 🏆 in 2003 by Johnny Wilkinson legendary boot & that great England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 team back then,
      Where the top South hemisphere teams win 8 RWCs,
      Also when the Rugby international ranking system was made in 2003 the South(mainly the All Blacks🇳🇿) dominated the number 1 ranked position since 2003-present,
      That’s why the South hemisphere rules Rugby Union overall wise to be honest with you.

    So happy little Sedbergh got a mention. Private school that costs like 100k a year but always a formidable rugby team that breeds some of the best players. Same for Kirkby Lonsdale & Kendal. Some great rugby towns in the north west.
