Freddi Fish: Kelp Seed Mystery (Wii) Walkthrough

  • Yep, it's the relatively forgotten Wii port of Freddi Fish today. This happened as a result of Atari's lame attempt to make Humongous relevant again in the mid-2000s. I'm frankly not surprised in the least they went bankrupt after all the stupid things they did.
    Here's the Wii port of Freddi Fish: Kelp Seed Mystery. Although a lot of people like to blame Majesco for changing the title, that actually was not their decision; in fact, the changed title goes back to a year before the Wii ports were even released. There was a small handful of retail re-releases in 2007, which all had the changed titles (and something else that's often overlooked -- Freddi Fish 2 and Pajama Sam 2 were also released with changed titles, being "Haunted Schoolhouse Mystery" and "Thunder and Lightning", respectively). So, although the changed title is often attributed to the Wii port, that's not technically correct.
    As for the port itself...the game is almost entirely unchanged. Being sourced from the 2007 PC port, we did get the ability to skip the movement scenes and the colorized item cursors which is a plus if you're used to the '94 or '98 PC versions, though it's not a change that was made specifically for the Wii port even though some people say otherwise. Also, bizarrely enough, the game runs in Slow Machine Mode for whatever reason (this mode was enabled if the game found your video card to be too slow in the PC version). This means the inventory bubbles don't pop and many of the background effects are missing, such as the water ripples in the cave where Gabby is stuck. I have no idea why they couldn't be bothered to fix this, considering the Wii is way more powerful than any computer that was released in 1994.
    Oh, and the elephant in the room...the game was sped up. I...don't even understand why this was done. What was the point of this? Everything looks like it moves on steroids. Did they think it looked smoother or something? It's incredibly distracting and it bothers the heck out of me. In fact you barely even have time to read the credits because of it. Why the HECK did they think this was a good idea? And there's small things like the fact that the port only runs in 480i with zero support for 480p (I have NEVER seen a Wii game outside of this that doesn't support it. It would have taken maybe two seconds to add!).
    On top of that, that's not even the stupidest thing about this port. I don't know how many of you know the whole story behind this, but here goes...Atari contracted Majesco to do the porting work, who then outsourced the work to Mistic Software. Mistic had every tool they could have possibly needed to do the work. They had the game assets, the source code, everything.
    So what did they choose to do?
    They literally just stuck a ScummVM build into the game and called it a day.
    I'm serious.
    ...okay, besides being lazy as all heck, they managed to mess up further. First off, they were paid to port the game code, not do the lazy thing (by which I mean the employee wages matched the labor it would have taken to port the whole game. They basically slacked off on their job). Second off...they ENTIRELY FAILED TO MAKE A SINGLE MENTION THAT SCUMMVM WAS EVEN IN THE GAME. That's a violation of the GPL (which is what ScummVM is licensed to...if you don't know what it is, it's not important, just think of it as a copyright violation). It's a long story and complicated, but all of the alternative options were essentially not options in some form or another. Here, read sev's blog post on this if you want all the detail. sev-notes.blogs...
    The games were pulled from store shelves and are somewhat troubling to find nowadays, but does it really matter that much? The game was virtually unchanged (aside from the developers sticking their names into the credits, which you barely even have time to read anyway), and it sure didn't seem like it helped a lot in renewing interest in these games. The laziness of the ports, coupled with not even being done legally was a good example to me of why Atari was so awful with these properties when they were in their hands, and I'm not surprised at all they ended up having to surrender them after declaring bankruptcy. While I may not like Tommo a lot (actually I could go on for another rant about them), they have done a whole lot more with these properties as a whole and having them on Steam was a pretty major step in the right direction. Plus they seem to be doing at least a little more than just having sporadic retail re-releases that you'll find in the bargain bin, so that's also a plus.
    As for these ports though...they were mostly a thing that happened and just came and went. However, I'll be darned if I didn't enjoy making another walkthrough of a Humongous game just for old time's sake. Can you believe it's been 5 years since I did my initial wave of Humongous game walkthroughs? I certainly can't.
    Enjoy the video!

    how did I not know about a Wii version???? I NEED this, I miss playing my old now-unplayable discs XD
    Why is the audio sped/pitched up, is it the game or the video?

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  4 роки тому +1

      You actually don't. The old discs can easily be played either by using a workaround that is widely documented or with ScummVM.
      And yeah, they sped this port up for reasons I will never know.

    The thing that always bothered me about this game was the cop out ending. "Wait, I've got an idea! We can share the kelp seeds!" Because it's that easy to convince a villain to turn face, right? Even as a kid, I always found that lame.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  8 років тому +7

      I kinda just saw the sharks as the justification for why the bottles were there in the first place and just as comic relief rather than true "villains" of the game. I guess that's why the ending never really bothered me a whole lot. Besides that, I thought they made much better villains in the second game.

    Perhaps the speed issues came from running a 24fps game on a 30fps console... I don't know the exact framerates of either version, but I see this kind of thing happen all the time in dubbed cartoons.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  6 років тому +3

      Actually, no. The original games ran at 10FPS. Also, that's not an issue; if you run ScummVM via the Homebrew Channel, the games run at the correct speed. That just makes this even less excusable.
      Also, you're thinking of NTSC/PAL speedup. That's a different issue entirely. Film was originally 24FPS, but American TVs are 60 (well, technically 30, just two fields on each frame, which means you end up with 60 fields per second); to compensate for this, they do what's called a 3:2 pulldown, where you show one film frame for three TV frames, then another for two, then three, then two, repeat. PAL TVs run at 50FPS, and the way they deal with that is simply speeding up the rate from 24 to 25, since that's exactly half the frame rate.
      But again, that has nothing to do with anything here since these games ran at 10FPS. I think the voice clips were sped up at a 6/5 factor, but the game itself was significantly sped up a *lot* more. And I've never heard any real explanation as to why.

    • @LeafRazorStorm
      @LeafRazorStorm 6 років тому +1

      Ah. Thanks for the info. As for what this port is going for, I tried slowing down this video to count the frames, and... it's about 16fps. I'm sure whoever made this port wanted to make the game look smoother without actually reprogramming anything, and 16fps was the "best" they could do without breaking the game completely. If I were to bring this remake one step further, I'd use an combination of Optical Flow (in Final Cut) and some hired in-between artists to 'finish' the animation (a clean 20 or 30 fps), then run the game at 2x or 3x speed to make the new framerate work.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  6 років тому +2

      Good grief, so almost 50% faster. That's insane.
      And yeah, in an ideal world they could have done something like that...but this is the same team that was paid to do a real, proper port and instead just illegally bundled ScummVM in. I don't think effort was anything they were searching for.

    So... what are the things you didn't like about Tommo? I know they made some stupid shit like publishing shovelware garbage like Garfield Kart and these random doll house games.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  8 років тому +1

      Oh boy. Here we go.
      First off, what you mentioned is a pretty major reason. It's absolutely disgusting to me that they use the name of Humongous to sell cheap mobile games. Humongous is a name of high quality to me and it's extra insulting that they just throw it around like that. Then there was the time they took down J2xp's uploads of game soundtracks (the kind where the whole soundtrack is in one video) which pissed a lot of us off quite a bit. Then there's the whole rocky history they've had in general (Atari sued them for an unauthorized knockoff console, for example. The irony is stunning). They're a parent company many of us don't hold the highest regard for. Of course, in their defense, they've also been much better than Atari ever was all the same; the most Atari ever did was the occasional bargain bin retail re-release (they had digital re-releases too...that also had DRM packaged with them that prevented one from playing them in ScummVM). Tommo got Night Dive to put the games on Steam, and not just a small handful -- they put ALL OF THEM, even the ones that hadn't seen a re-release after the turn of the millennium (The classics, for example) and all of the rare games. Not to mention they've put out new merchandise and brought back the old Humongous website. The things they've done wrong still piss me off, don't get me wrong, but I also can't completely hate all the things they've done either.

    • @SpunkyLadl
      @SpunkyLadl 8 років тому +1

      Funny enough, I contacted them about applying or the company and new releases, and they said that they had no plans at the moment to release new Humongous Entertainment games. So, I think Tommo MAY or may not have some idea into pushing forward this company and their IP's, but I would sure love to see something fresh and new with some beautifully animation in this day of age.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne  8 років тому +1

      I didn't think they would. And really the idea that we would get any is sort of wishful thinking in this day and age. It's sad to say, and I'm gonna come across as "get off my lawn" here, but children nowadays are more invested in rudimentary phone apps rather than anything that requires actual thought like these games.
      I would love to see it happen though. Maybe it'll happen, I dunno, but right now I'm not really holding my breath.

      Don't forget, Night Dive also made most of the foreign dubs available in their Steam releases, including some of the hard-to-find UK dubs. And I'm totally not mentioning that just because I provided some of the datafiles from my copies for them. No siree.

    One other thing Majesco could've done was at the very least use any of the background cues from the game itself as the menu music instead of using a cue from one of the later games, but nope, they chose to cop out on it. Another indicator that THEY! JUST! DID! NOT! CARE!
