I definitely agree with you. My dad has all of these cards and I think the 5th year just looks so sharp. Wasn’t that also the year he won his first ship?
Rookies aren’t always worth more than later cards, high numbers and short prints of a player’s later cards can be worth more. Mostly what you’re saying is true, but not always. I think what really drives a cards price is the card’s popularity among collectors. Undoubtedly the Jordan rookie is popular with people who grew up in that era (myself) who can now afford them (myself). People are starved for nostalgia. I would not invest big money into any modern player unless they were within about 5 years of retiring. It’s far too risky.
Star was officially licensed by the NBA to produce cards from the 1983-84 season to the 1985-86 season. You can also see "Officially Licensed Product" with the NBA logo at the back of Star's basketball cards.
I grew up around this time....86 and 87 had similar print runs...followed by 88...by 89 they start to ramp up and those 90 fleers are true junk wax. Because of that, I'm buying just the first three Jordan years. Supply is more important than anything here. Remember, basketball didn't become a mainstream hobby until late 88/early 89...fleer didn't make much product until the demand picked up.
I got a box of 90s sports cards with early 90s fleer i know for a fact. My pops found it years ago. Gonna go through it in a few days praying that last card of the jordans is in there cause i saw that years cards. Only collected hockey cards back then
I remember as a kid thinking that there was a 1990 fleer version of the Jordan without the print line difference underneath the hoop and then if I ever found it it would be worth a ton not knowing how print runs worked. I am surprised they never fix that though considering he was the main player in the set
Well the 86 rookie is absolutely dazzling. I love the rather vintage style jersey Michael is wearing as well. As a general rule the sequence of the cards is the principal reason for its relative higher cost compared to the subsequent cards. Although there are interesting instances for a collector to be aware of when a second year regular card is short-printed. For example, the second year card of 6 time Stanley Cup winner Mark Messier from O-Pee-Chee when well centered is worth close to if not more that its abundantly available rookie card. Same holds true for for Brett Favre's relatively scarce second year card compared to his rookie so the bottom line is doing a little research can go a long way.
I actually own the three in the middle. To be honest the 88 fleer set imo looks amazing. The whole style looks really cool and clean compared to 87 and 89. The graded Jordans i have are bgs 87 8.5 88 9 89 9. The 86 is out of reach but i do own a bgs 9 magic johnson. so i can appreciated the look of those cards. they are definitely worth it.
Nice video. I’m currently watching a bunch of these videos because during the pandemic I watched “the last dance” and I remembered I have a insane amount of 1986-87, 87-88, 88-89, 89-90 jordan cards and sets all in sleeves and straight from the packs when I was a kid. I remember it like it was yesterday opening the packs. I still even have the boxes from the packs. It’s been like 20 years since I have looked at them. I have roughly 5-7 of each of those sets. I say that because they are all in numerical order. For instance 87 I have 6 Kareem cards. I have 8 of those 89 fleer jordan stickers. I’ve been doing my research but am not sure what I wanna do with them. Grading cost a lot 5-7 of each common of the sets. How do I decide what is worth grading? I’m no longer a collector but I know their worth something nice. For instance I have 7 Olajuwon 87 fleer cards. 5 of them look perfect to me but is it worth grading, also something like Ron Harper 87 fleer? I have 8 of those. In 88 fleer their are a bunch of rookies, but if I grade them and get a 8-9 is it really worth it? Anyone else unsure like me? I’m 43yrs old and not really sure I wanna run a graded card by card auction these days.
Same here. I happened to pick up Jordan’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th year cards in the mid 90’s. Even when picking up his 2nd year, as a set, proved difficult. I worked in a comic book wear house and it took time to find a dealer that had the complete set. My understanding is that in the beginning Fleer did not produce as many cards. By their fourth year Fleer let the presses run.
I have 5 of the 88 fleer stickers and 9 of the 89 fleer all 14 with great corners and edges. But their all off center. Is it worth sending them in for possible 10’s OC?
Star 101 is Jordan's rookie card without question. That 86' Fleer is his 2nd yr card. I own all these cards and have since I was a kid growing up in Chicago. I'm yet to hear even a decent argument why it's not the Star. The weak arguments range from to many counterfeits (the Fleer has much more without question) to how they were packaged and how many were printed (not sure why that would matter). And the Star is much much more rare. Star was the only officially licensed card company in Jordan's rookie year.
@travisj Because of all of the above you mentioned. But also mostly that picture that is on that star rookie is terrible!! he's getting a regular meaningless rebound in that photo? Everyone wants and remembers Jordan's flying dunks ... fleer 86 all day .
@@marcokalion7293 your comment makes absolutely no sense. The reasons I mentioned that there's many more counterfeit Fleer? Or that the Star is more rare? Which one do you think makes the Star 101 NOT his rookie? 🤔.. and as far as the picture that has nothing to do with making it a rookie card. You've probably never seen the 84' Star Jordan Court kings #26 but check out the picture on that card, spectacular! The fact the 101 has a picture of him getting a rebound actually proves even more it's his true rookie because when they made it they obviously didn't even know much about him yet. Not the case by his 3rd year when the Fleer came out.
@@freedomfight1933 no one said it wasn't his rookie ? so your not makeing any sense ..its simply that card is trash no matter what you say .some people don't care about the picture and some do ..every other card in star shows a better picture . @@marcokalion7293 the Star 101 in BGS 9 sells for well into six figures and a BGS 9.5 most people agree is a million dollar card. So I would say it’s safe to say some people care a lot haha
@@marcokalion7293 the 86' Fleer #57 just has to large of a population to hold up as a million dollar type card in the long run. That's what I'm interested in. This is not just my opinion, the new owner of PSA said the same thing. The Star 101 has that potential in high grades.
Question? Is there any value to a Michael Jordan picture with family from the 90s? Its auto but think its printed. When i was a kid I sent him a card to auto but he sent me back the card with pic and letter. Ive tried to find pic online but dont see any like this. Ive had letter and pic now for 30 years. Any advice?
I always go for cards I like the pic of the card gotta be sick I don’t care how much it’s worth unless it’s like 200$ or more cause I ain’t got money like that maybe once in a while
I'm always surprised at how many people love that 1990 Fleer card. I was collecting since the late 80s, and when that 1990 card came out, I didn't like it, mainly because the photo wasn't sharp. Even Beckett did a write-up about all of the MJ cards up to that point, and they mentioned how the photo was a bit blurry.
I found a 90 fleer last weekend in my old trading card storage. Need to grade it.

That 1990 Fleer Jordan is a great action shot dunking and Scotty Pippen in frame

86 Fleer was not Jordan's roockie year, it was Fleers roockie year. Jordan played 82 games in 1984, and Star was his roockie card
Star wasn’t licensed though
@@rbos236 Don't think the people that pay 75k for his 84 Star card really care about that..

Wish I would have bought more of a Jordan collection I focused in on Montana. I do have all of Jordan's starting lineups though.
What makes them more valuable is what makes anything more valuable. Always comes down to supply and demand. Another good video. Thank you for sharing.
