Thank you for honoring this exceptional human being named Orson Welles.
I weep for Orson; he deserved so much more. Except for the financial difficulties that plagued him, he seemed to enjoy living the life he ensconced his world within. It was said he had developed a reputation for not finishing films, yet his life was dedicated to making them; they couldn't take his creativity from him. A self-described "contrarian," it is the contrarians that the system aways strives to keep down for some reason. Contrarians tend to be quite extraordinary in their chosen field, and maybe it's that simple: the Powers That Be recognize the ones whose ways are so far outside the box that they are viewed as a threat because they are superior - the alpha male thing and all that. I am grateful he had Oja with him for the last years of his life; you can see the joy and love in her facial expressions as she recalls their life spent together and the fun they had; her memories are intact as she kindly shares them with us. Orson's God-given talent was matched by none; his films that were published are profound; I wish he were alive today.
Orson Welles must not be forgotten.

this was fantastic. the humour depicted in many of the clips was a quite unexpected pleasure. and its often overlooked just how good of an actor he was. in one interview I remember of his he said one of his greatest regrets was spending his life in an unending search for financing for his films. thanks for the upload.

@@marlbrouk Woah , it's reallly out there. Fast paced at the start and I must admit I'm trying to make sense of what's happening. The concept of shooting a film within a film is definitely a Orson idea that you can appreciate but I can see many who would find overwhelming
John Huston is a delight, and as a male I enjoyed the Oja Kodar nudity ;-) This is something a Welles fan or students of film can really sink their teeth into, but many viewers might get lost. I admit I did at times but catching one more Orson film , 33 years after the genius left us, was worth it.

If--at the time--a rich guy gave Orson $20 million dollars and free creativity to either finish up one of his films or do something new, do you think he could produce a complete film? And would it be great?
    I'd like to think so.
    btw thanks for the upload.

In his 1970s book THE GREAT MOVIES, William F Bayer asked whether any contemporary studio would put up the money if Welles said he could make another film of CITIZEN KANE stature

    • @markrago4839
      @markrago4839 7 років тому +3

Perhaps, but he was largely self made simply because he was brilliant and talented, his work and the bizarre style in which he marketed both his work and himself made him great.

    • @MsFreshadenu

He could and it would be great. No doubt.

    • @TheStockwell

Probably not. His chaotic and improvisational approach to every aspect of filmmaking was a problem early in his career.
When he DID get money, he spent a lot of it on lavish living and holding court. Work on a film would happen at a later point.
According to his daughter, filmmaking would involve checking into the most lavish hotel and having parties and giving interviews.
After a while, he would move into a less expensive hotel and throw smaller parties. Eventually, the accommodations weren't very impressive, the dinners much less opulent - and Welles would then ask his backers for more money.
Rebecca Welles thought it was an odd way to make a film. 🤔

After The Magnificent Ambersons and his Hollywood career were destroyed, he had a self-destructive malaise that he could never overcome. I think that William Randolph Hearst and his paid cronies and thugs destroyed Ambersons and Welles, ruining the psyche of a genius.

Do you think orson Welles would of loved the role of Capt. Ahab instead of Gregory Peck. Could of been an oscar for him..

"The Deep" was eventually made as "Dead Calm", tho' that movie only has three characters, none corresponding to the one Welles played. I'm sure this could be completed with motion capture, but who would go to the trouble?

He was - as a cultural and goodwill ambassador sent by the United States government to provide an antidote to the growing influence of the Axis in Latin America nations.
      This Spake Wikipedia:
"Welles was thoroughly briefed in Washington, D.C., immediately before his departure for Brazil, and film scholar Catherine L. Benamou, a specialist in Latin American affairs, finds it "not unlikely" that he was among the goodwill ambassadors who were asked to gather intelligence for the U.S. government in addition to their cultural duties. She concludes that Welles's acceptance of Whitney's request was "a logical and patently patriotic choice".
