Alvedansen and Icebreaker - some of the most underrated entries of all time!! :(

Alvedansen was phenomenal IMO, but the reason it didn't do so well is pretty obvious I think. Bosnia that year also had an AMAZING ethnic song and took all the "I want to hear the country's identity" peoples' votes away from Norway.

Norway is a very important country for the contest since numerous songs have generated great feelings to the audiences at times.
The 1993 song "Alle mine tankar" was composed by a famous Greek artist of the "old times", Lakis Karnezis, who had since years moved by marriage in Norway. The melody is a very striking Greek one and that's why there is some notable (at least to us Greeks) awkwardness for the Norwegian lyrics to fit in the tempo of the song. I remember in a footage on TV about the composer - years later - he was interviewed and he insisted on the awe he felt about this participation and especially for the day of the Grand Final. The Greek jury of course that night overlooked even the Cypriot entry with a light 10 only to give their 12 points straight to Norway as a tribute pay to the emigrant composer (even though the song sounds so familiar to the Greek ear that they would have marked it top high anyway).
The weird thing is that two out of three of their victories come from undeserving songs (the one is silly and the other is customized for 16 - year - old little girls) while others, real masterpieces, were brutally overlooked (p.e. Alvedansen, My heart is yours, The first day of love etc).
Another shocking thing is Berger's success song as it seems to have penetrated the liking of the audience and fans a great deal. But the lyrics are weird and they always make me feel very uncomfortable. "I feed you my love", really? Aside from this being a viciously ugly image, if you dare to take the declaration *literally* , brhhhh, really Margaret "I feed you my love"??
I can also understand the hype about "Ven a bailar con migo", but this poor lady gathered so many, but so so many negative comments on her appearance the final night. Poor little (euph) girl.

If you're still wondering, according to my limited Norwegian from my year studying abroad, smäting means little things, and they're comparing big items to the little things in life. BTW, 1980 is low-key my favourite.

Ironically, I grew up listening to and loving Secret Garden. Still love them now, too! Fun fact: a lot of people like Norway winning 95 cause it broke up Ireland's winning streak, but don't realize that the blonde violinist is actually Irish. Her name is Fionnuala Sherry, and she's a Kildare girl from Naas, now living in Dublin. So in a way, Ireland still snuck into the winning spot cause of Fionnuala.

I have to admit that I too disliked _Nocturne_ at first, but as I grew up, I also started to love it more and more. As a Swede, my favorites are _La Det Swinge_ , _Nocturne_ , _Alvedansen_ (everyone that I watched that competition with voted for that one), _In My Dreams_ , _Hold on be Strong_ , _I Feed You My Love_ and last but not least: _Grab the Moment_ . I'm like the lone Scandinavian that absolutely hated (and still do) _Fairytale_ . I just can't stand some of the notes he hits, I'm sad to say.

The girl with the umbrella in 1971 was actually Hanne Krogh from Bobbysocks. She also wrote the 1987 song for Norway, Mitt liv (My life), along with two time Eurovision-winner Rolf Løvland (1985 and 1995). Hanne Krogh was also one of four singers in Just 4 fun from 1991.

In 1964, the people's favorite to win Melodi Grand Prix was the up-beat and fresh-at-the-time pop song "La meg være ung" sung by Wenche Myhre. The jury made sure it was 3rd instead... I would be curious to hear your opinion on it and how well you think it would have done in ESC 1964.

    • @ESCunited
      @ESCunited  6 років тому +3

I did not know that, I gotta check that out. Wenche was quite famous in Germany, I remember her Hit "knallrotes Gummiboot". And she also represented Germany in the 60s. How cool.

Jahn Teigen who represented Norway in 1978, 1982 and 1983 has participated 14 times in Melodi Grand Prix as a singer. Some of the other song that didn`t win in Norway, has gone on to be iconic; Voodoo from 1976, Glasnost 1988, Optimist 1989 and Smil 1990.
Jahn Teigen was actually married to Anita Skorgan from 84-87. They have a daughter together. Anita Skorgan represented Norway as a solo artist in 1977 with Casanova and in 1979 with the song Oliver, and then again in 1982 and 1983 along with Jahn Teigen. She was also one of the co-writers of the 1988 song For vår jord. g

I remember watching when Ven a Bailar Conmigo was in it, I was SO sad when it didn't qualify. It was my favorite that year hands down. I still love it

    My top 20 ( with grades in 1 to 10 scale) :
    1 1995 10!
Divine masterpiece! The most extraordinary piece of music ever in Eurovision!
Its so little part of singing is quite questionable for a song competition but the heavenly emotion it strikes you with doesn't leave any space for doubting.
    2 2005 9,5
Legendary entry! It rocked hard and should have won.
    3 1996 9,5
An other heavenly anthem by Norway. Pure beauty!! Ireland was very good but Norway should have won again.
    4 2013 9,0
Amazingly Charming!! It deserved at least the 2nd place if not victory.
    5 2014 9,0
What a marvellous heart-breaking ballad!! It gives me shivers every time I listen to it. But I only listen. I never watch the presentation. This says much.
    6 2003 8,5
A really great composition. Very powerful ballad. But the guy was really struggling to sing it. It still deserved the good place it got among great entries but it definitely didn't stand at its best potentials.
    7 2015 8,0
Wonderfully dramatic duet. An other seriously adorable entry.
    8 2009 8,0
Very powerful song but something annoyed me in Alex Rybak. In 2018 I understood I was right.
    9 2006 8,0
Beautiful representation of Norway. A gorgeous Norwegian beauty sharing with us northern sounds of heaven.
    10 2008 7,5
Good melody, proper performance, a more than decent entry.
    11 2016 7,5
I'm one of those who mostly liked the weirdness of this composition. And the performer helped it a lot to shine.
    12 2001 7,0
I seriously adore this melody! I don't care at all if it was dated as fuck. That wasn't dated for me, that was classic!
The huge problem here is the dude singing. Absolutely unbearable. One of the most punchable faces ever in Eurovision. I try hard to unsee that face every time I listen to this song so I can enjoy his beautiful voice delivering this wonderful ballad.
    13 1992 7,0
Quite weird song but interesting. A better presentation (omg how horrible styling! But ok it was early 90s) would have helped much.
    14 1993 7,0
The composition is not exactly thrilling but the girl is pure velvet. The song takes me somewhere so it's quite enjoyable.
    15 2007 6,5
I wouldn't expect latin from Norway. I wasn't amazed since I already had high expectations from Norway but it was ok.
    16 2010 6,5
The one and only handsome Norwegian guy. I don't know, either Norway has no gorgeous men or they don't share them with Eurofans. So many beautiful women and just this man. The song should be ok and I kind of like this genre but something didn't work great.
    17 2017 6,5
I see what is to be appreciated about this but it's not quite my thing. Just ok.
    18 1989 6,0
    Nice ballad. Just missing something.
    19 1994 6,0
Cute but not extraordinary melody. Powerful voices but the guy's face is so annoying that distracts me from fully enjoying this.
    20 1998 6,0
The guy has some charm and lots of charisma but the song doesn't help him much. Just nicy. Not big stuff.

    Dukkemann= doll man
And the 1980 song is not in Sami, it’s in Norwegian, but they were “joiking” which is a way of singing is Sami.

For me, my favourite entry from Norway probably is 2015. I do love 2011 and 1985 tho.
Also does anyone else think that Spain Should've won in 1995 and not Norway or is it just me?
(I do love Norway 1995 tho)

It’s not easy for an orchestra to play lots of songs perfectly in one evening, but if the Paris 1978 orchestra had played better, Etter Mil would’ve been smashing imo. Jahn Teigen had an epic performance. It’s a great song, the melody fits the lyrics, it has a On-the-Road-Jack-Kerouac sound and Jahn is telling his story here. I like his generosity towards the backing singers and the orchestra. Douze points. I’m not Norwegian : )

You took my comment from the last video the wrong way. I wasn't meaning I wanted to listen to the songs but just to put the volume up slightly on the music part so that your reactions make more sense, eg sometimes you were drowning out someones vocals when reacting to them which is a bit counterintuitive for the viewer.
Also 'Monster Like Me' is my favourite ever Eurovision song 👌
