Alvedansen and Icebreaker - some of the most underrated entries of all time!! :( Norway has definietly become a super power of eurovision - keep up the good work dear neighbours 👌
Alvedansen was phenomenal IMO, but the reason it didn't do so well is pretty obvious I think. Bosnia that year also had an AMAZING ethnic song and took all the "I want to hear the country's identity" peoples' votes away from Norway.
It's so funny that mil etter mil and Aldri i livet both got last place, but they are still some of the most iconic songs from eurovision (for us at least 😂)
Norway is a very important country for the contest since numerous songs have generated great feelings to the audiences at times. The 1993 song "Alle mine tankar" was composed by a famous Greek artist of the "old times", Lakis Karnezis, who had since years moved by marriage in Norway. The melody is a very striking Greek one and that's why there is some notable (at least to us Greeks) awkwardness for the Norwegian lyrics to fit in the tempo of the song. I remember in a footage on TV about the composer - years later - he was interviewed and he insisted on the awe he felt about this participation and especially for the day of the Grand Final. The Greek jury of course that night overlooked even the Cypriot entry with a light 10 only to give their 12 points straight to Norway as a tribute pay to the emigrant composer (even though the song sounds so familiar to the Greek ear that they would have marked it top high anyway). The weird thing is that two out of three of their victories come from undeserving songs (the one is silly and the other is customized for 16 - year - old little girls) while others, real masterpieces, were brutally overlooked (p.e. Alvedansen, My heart is yours, The first day of love etc). Another shocking thing is Berger's success song as it seems to have penetrated the liking of the audience and fans a great deal. But the lyrics are weird and they always make me feel very uncomfortable. "I feed you my love", really? Aside from this being a viciously ugly image, if you dare to take the declaration *literally* , brhhhh, really Margaret "I feed you my love"?? I can also understand the hype about "Ven a bailar con migo", but this poor lady gathered so many, but so so many negative comments on her appearance the final night. Poor little (euph) girl.
If you're still wondering, according to my limited Norwegian from my year studying abroad, smäting means little things, and they're comparing big items to the little things in life. BTW, 1980 is low-key my favourite.
Olivia Mac Arthur You are correct. Fun-fact: The 1980 song was featured in the 2011 version of the movie "The Thing" in a scene with the Norwegian cast members singing it.
What a run of brilliant songs! I Feed You My Love, Silent Storm, A Monster Like Me, Icebreaker & Grab the Moment. Wow. I’m OK with Alexander’s 2018 song too. Thank you, Norway ❤️
Ironically, I grew up listening to and loving Secret Garden. Still love them now, too! Fun fact: a lot of people like Norway winning 95 cause it broke up Ireland's winning streak, but don't realize that the blonde violinist is actually Irish. Her name is Fionnuala Sherry, and she's a Kildare girl from Naas, now living in Dublin. So in a way, Ireland still snuck into the winning spot cause of Fionnuala.
After watching this video several times, I looked up the song at @11:05 (1990-"Brandenburger Tor") and I LOVE it!!! I've been listening to both the Norwegian and English versions over and over. I don't understand why it didn't do better in the voting (although I'll admit I haven't heard all the songs from that year).
I love the fact that Jan Teigen was on his third song by the time you noticed he had more than one. You should rewatch it and see how many times some of the artists actually got to sing
Woo, my country on my birthday! (Well, I saw this after midnight, lol) My favourite is 1988. The lyrics are probably the most powerful Eurovision lyrics I know of.
I have to admit that I too disliked _Nocturne_ at first, but as I grew up, I also started to love it more and more. As a Swede, my favorites are _La Det Swinge_ , _Nocturne_ , _Alvedansen_ (everyone that I watched that competition with voted for that one), _In My Dreams_ , _Hold on be Strong_ , _I Feed You My Love_ and last but not least: _Grab the Moment_ . I'm like the lone Scandinavian that absolutely hated (and still do) _Fairytale_ . I just can't stand some of the notes he hits, I'm sad to say.
The girl with the umbrella in 1971 was actually Hanne Krogh from Bobbysocks. She also wrote the 1987 song for Norway, Mitt liv (My life), along with two time Eurovision-winner Rolf Løvland (1985 and 1995). Hanne Krogh was also one of four singers in Just 4 fun from 1991.
In 1964, the people's favorite to win Melodi Grand Prix was the up-beat and fresh-at-the-time pop song "La meg være ung" sung by Wenche Myhre. The jury made sure it was 3rd instead... I would be curious to hear your opinion on it and how well you think it would have done in ESC 1964.
I did not know that, I gotta check that out. Wenche was quite famous in Germany, I remember her Hit "knallrotes Gummiboot". And she also represented Germany in the 60s. How cool.
In my very bad english (I'm french), let me tell you "You're great, Matt !" My Top 3 Norway : 1. A monster like me (Mørland & Debra Scarlett) 2015 2. Spirit in the sky (KEiiNO) 2019 3. Nocturne (Secret Garden) 1995 And I find you (and jurys and tevoters) a little harsh with Tooji ;)
19:49 It’s because she had many fans from when she won Eurovision for junior in Norway it’s called MGP Junior and she won that that’s why she got to Eurovision
Norway = Alexander Rybak ? 😂 ...Yes!! the first winner in ESC that I knew was him 1979: Interesting 1980: Catchy and good. Maybe my winner that year 1982: Nice and beautiful 1995: The best song in ESC 2006: Perfect. Another winner 2009: Nice violin solo, great dancers 2013: My winner that year 2014: Agree, it's beautiful 2017: This was really good
I've actually got La Det Swinge in a playlist, it's a fun song!!! Honestly, Norway doesn't always do great but when they're good, they're FREAKING AMAZING (Alexander's the obvious one but Keiino? Nocturne? Amazing!!!)
So you cracked the 10000 mark. Amazing what review videos can do for you. It would have an even greater effect if you would go into more detail. Congratulations and celebrations....
Didrik (my heart is yours) was actually part way through his classic singer education so he's now an opera singer (although he does a lot of other things than opera) and I love him
Voy Voy means Hey! Hey! (Thank you Schlarger Lucas) and Smalting is Small Things (thank you Chris West in your book on the ESC - even if we disagree on a few of the songs).
My top 5 in no order are Karoline Kruger from 88, Secret Garden from 95 and the 3 with Elisabeth Andreassen, Bobbysocks from 85, with Jan Werner (R.I.P.) from 94 and her solo one from 96 she is my joint fave Eurovision artist along with Carola.
Jahn Teigen who represented Norway in 1978, 1982 and 1983 has participated 14 times in Melodi Grand Prix as a singer. 1984, One of the women was the daughter of my music teacher in primary school. We were all huge fans later of the group although I hadn't started school then, but I knew they grew up just down the road from where I lived I also when to high school with Maria for a year. Agree with you about the 1995 winner, thought it was terrible back in '95, Spain was my winner that year but as I grow older I love it & brings back memories of that time. 1985, 1995, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2015 & 2017 are my favourites from Norway.
Tee hee - my Alexa came on when you said Alex too. LOL! Your love of the really romantic songs is charming. :-) But gotta say, I never got "Monster in Me"...just weird. ;-)
Unrelated comment: I can sing "Let it go" from Disney's Frozen in Norwegian! (I'm from Sweden but I listened to the song in Norwegian one time and memorised all the lyrics.) (Swedish and Norwegian is almost the same language so that's another reason I'm really good at singing "Let it go" in Norwegian.)
The 1968 on is a song about being in a rush to catch the last bus home, so jeg it is a lot of stress😉 Also I'm still bitter that we didn't qin in 2005!! Wig Wam is awsome!!
It have it’s ups and downs, but still is a nice ESC country. My top 20 ( with grades in 1 to 10 scale) : 1 1995 10! Divine masterpiece! The most extraordinary piece of music ever in Eurovision! Its so little part of singing is quite questionable for a song competition but the heavenly emotion it strikes you with doesn't leave any space for doubting. 2 2005 9,5 Legendary entry! It rocked hard and should have won. 3 1996 9,5 An other heavenly anthem by Norway. Pure beauty!! Ireland was very good but Norway should have won again. 4 2013 9,0 Amazingly Charming!! It deserved at least the 2nd place if not victory. 5 2014 9,0 What a marvellous heart-breaking ballad!! It gives me shivers every time I listen to it. But I only listen. I never watch the presentation. This says much. 6 2003 8,5 A really great composition. Very powerful ballad. But the guy was really struggling to sing it. It still deserved the good place it got among great entries but it definitely didn't stand at its best potentials. 7 2015 8,0 Wonderfully dramatic duet. An other seriously adorable entry. 8 2009 8,0 Very powerful song but something annoyed me in Alex Rybak. In 2018 I understood I was right. 9 2006 8,0 Beautiful representation of Norway. A gorgeous Norwegian beauty sharing with us northern sounds of heaven. 10 2008 7,5 Good melody, proper performance, a more than decent entry. 11 2016 7,5 I'm one of those who mostly liked the weirdness of this composition. And the performer helped it a lot to shine. 12 2001 7,0 I seriously adore this melody! I don't care at all if it was dated as fuck. That wasn't dated for me, that was classic! The huge problem here is the dude singing. Absolutely unbearable. One of the most punchable faces ever in Eurovision. I try hard to unsee that face every time I listen to this song so I can enjoy his beautiful voice delivering this wonderful ballad. 13 1992 7,0 Quite weird song but interesting. A better presentation (omg how horrible styling! But ok it was early 90s) would have helped much. 14 1993 7,0 The composition is not exactly thrilling but the girl is pure velvet. The song takes me somewhere so it's quite enjoyable. 15 2007 6,5 I wouldn't expect latin from Norway. I wasn't amazed since I already had high expectations from Norway but it was ok. 16 2010 6,5 The one and only handsome Norwegian guy. I don't know, either Norway has no gorgeous men or they don't share them with Eurofans. So many beautiful women and just this man. The song should be ok and I kind of like this genre but something didn't work great. 17 2017 6,5 I see what is to be appreciated about this but it's not quite my thing. Just ok. 18 1989 6,0 Nice ballad. Just missing something. 19 1994 6,0 Cute but not extraordinary melody. Powerful voices but the guy's face is so annoying that distracts me from fully enjoying this. 20 1998 6,0 The guy has some charm and lots of charisma but the song doesn't help him much. Just nicy. Not big stuff.
I’m not a fan of the aurovision from Norway 2019, but everything else. Love it!!. I am from Norway. Love the country😊 fairytale, haba haba and monster like me❤️ Let me know if you need transelation😉
Gammel mann= Old man Dukkemann= doll man And the 1980 song is not in Sami, it’s in Norwegian, but they were “joiking” which is a way of singing is Sami.
For me, my favourite entry from Norway probably is 2015. I do love 2011 and 1985 tho. Also does anyone else think that Spain Should've won in 1995 and not Norway or is it just me? (I do love Norway 1995 tho)
It’s not easy for an orchestra to play lots of songs perfectly in one evening, but if the Paris 1978 orchestra had played better, Etter Mil would’ve been smashing imo. Jahn Teigen had an epic performance. It’s a great song, the melody fits the lyrics, it has a On-the-Road-Jack-Kerouac sound and Jahn is telling his story here. I like his generosity towards the backing singers and the orchestra. Douze points. I’m not Norwegian : )
You took my comment from the last video the wrong way. I wasn't meaning I wanted to listen to the songs but just to put the volume up slightly on the music part so that your reactions make more sense, eg sometimes you were drowning out someones vocals when reacting to them which is a bit counterintuitive for the viewer. Also 'Monster Like Me' is my favourite ever Eurovision song 👌
I can assure you I wasn't referring to your comment. I was talking about the "Shut up, I want to listen to the songs" comments I receive on a constant basis :D
“I Feed You My Love” is a freaking masterpiece.
Alvedansen and Icebreaker - some of the most underrated entries of all time!! :(
Norway has definietly become a super power of eurovision - keep up the good work dear neighbours 👌
poertjt2 Alvedansen is a masterpiece !
I voted for Alvedansen!
Alvedansen was phenomenal IMO, but the reason it didn't do so well is pretty obvious I think. Bosnia that year also had an AMAZING ethnic song and took all the "I want to hear the country's identity" peoples' votes away from Norway.
poertjt2 Yeah... i must Say Icebreaker was super boring though. You see songs like That everywhere...
I still listen to Alvedansen
Småting = Small things xD
Eivaro IT is a small person
Småting= little things not small things lol :D
Småting is more like.. little things that doesn't really matter
It's so funny that mil etter mil and Aldri i livet both got last place, but they are still some of the most iconic songs from eurovision (for us at least 😂)
Nocturne from 95 is IMO the best eurovision song ever.
Couldn't agree more. Euphoria is a nice second, I think.

norway was on fire from 2011 to 2015 imo
but 2009 best obvs
Hmm, 2009 is the best year for me. My opinion. I love Alexander Rybak from all of my heart and that will never change
What a run of brilliant songs! I Feed You My Love, Silent Storm, A Monster Like Me, Icebreaker & Grab the Moment. Wow. I’m OK with Alexander’s 2018 song too. Thank you, Norway ❤️
Silent Storm definitely makes me love Norway, that song is my favourite of all time.

Never thought of it like that.
I’m pretty sure we all know she’s Irish though. Always thought it wass funny. especially since Ireland went right in for another win the year after.
Rolf løvland was the composer though. And the singer is Norwegian, other than that though:p
Absolutely love Hold On Be Strong! By far my favorite Norwegian Eurovision entry and the best song of Eurovision 2008. I'm so glad you liked it too!
After watching this video several times, I looked up the song at @11:05 (1990-"Brandenburger Tor") and I LOVE it!!! I've been listening to both the Norwegian and English versions over and over. Alle Mine Tankar is one of the most beautiful ESC songs ever.
I loved Norway in the last few years, If they continue to deliver great songs maybe we could be in Norway Soon ....
Yes! 😍😍
You should check out the recent winner of the Norwegian contest, the song is called Spirit In the Sky by Keiino. What do you think about it? 😇😇
Woo, my country on my birthday! (Well, I saw this after midnight, lol)
My favourite is 1988. The lyrics are probably the most powerful Eurovision lyrics I know of.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

what an amazing singer is elizabeth andreassen... every time i hear her "goosebums" :-)
She is ridiculously good.
My mother at 11:43!
Literally! I mean Norway's entry in 1992, Merethe Trøan. I am her son!
Bendik Trøan Wiig wow! That's so cool!

1981 wasn't written by Benny, but he produced the studio version which also featured Agnetha and Frida on backing vocals.

My Top 3 Norway :
1. A monster like me (Mørland & Debra Scarlett) 2015
2. Spirit in the sky (KEiiNO) 2019
3. Nocturne (Secret Garden) 1995

Honestly aldri i livet is one of my fav songs because when i was i 3-7 years i always heard it on the radio

I also when to high school with Maria for a year.

Thanks for loving 94 so much
It's amazing. Underappreciated by the masses!!!!!!
sami language are the language in the song but the other guy in white sings in Norwegian, but you mostly hear the joik (traditional singing often without or with few words)
The 2005 one is the only one I got to see in person. It was so much fun.
The song Samiid ædnan is in Norwegian, but the title and joik(eolelo part) is Northern Sámi
Esc United: aiight so our guy is gonna react to Norway, what should we put on the thumbnail so people click on it?
*Beat*
Esc United: hey where's that violin guy?
(And if you're wondering "yeah but did it work?" ....I mean we're here aren't we? 😂)
fun fact, the young girl singing in 71 is the same girl that won esc in 85 in the duo Bobbysocks
Songs that stands out to me:
1966
1990
1995
2003
2009
2011 (her vocals are not so strong but fun song)
2013
2017
2019
Theres other songs I like as well. But I feel these needed a higlight❤️😊
småting means "little things" if you translate it diretly. But now days we use "småting" as a way of addressing tine object or "clutter".
La det svinge also have an English version too ;) we Norwegians sure love the last place..
My favorites are Fairytale, Grab the moment and Spirit in the sky
Agree with you about the 1995 winner, thought it was terrible back in '95, Spain was my winner that year but as I grow older I love it & brings back memories of that time. 1985, 1995, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2015 & 2017 are my favourites from Norway.
1996 is my absolute favorite
Tee hee - my Alexa came on when you said Alex too. LOL! Your love of the really romantic songs is charming. :-) But gotta say, I never got "Monster in Me"...just weird. ;-)
i still listen to that Carl Espen song regularly, soo much feeling comes out of that man 😩👌
19:56 hvilken plass kom den på? Witch place came that on?
Kvalifiserte seg ikke til finalen. Havnet på 13. plass i semifinale 2 (hvor 18 land deltok).
2006 is my all time fav Eurovision entry !
2003, 2006, 2009, 2013, 2017👍😍
Unrelated comment: I can sing "Let it go" from Disney's Frozen in Norwegian! (I'm from Sweden but I listened to the song in Norwegian one time and memorised all the lyrics.) (Swedish and Norwegian is almost the same language so that's another reason I'm really good at singing "Let it go" in Norwegian.)
Where did 2013 go? It is cut out?
It was on of the absolute best Norwegian entries.
2:16 voi voi does not mean ANYTHING😂😂 it is Just some randome words
Norway 2015,17,19 and 20 are so fking good!!!!!!!!!
even though I am Norwegian, I have no idea what they're saying in the earliest editions
12:19 What are you doing?
The 1968 on is a song about being in a rush to catch the last bus home, so jeg it is a lot of stress😉
Also I'm still bitter that we didn't qin in 2005!! Wig Wam is awsome!!
Honstly.I think 2017 might be my favourite.

Småting means small stuff
I remember watching when Ven a Bailar Conmigo was in it, I was SO sad when it didn't qualify. It was my favorite that year hands down. I still love it
«Gammel mann» means old man
12:05 is my aunt #blessed
My top 20 ( with grades in 1 to 10 scale) :
1 1995 10!
Divine masterpiece! The most extraordinary piece of music ever in Eurovision!
Its so little part of singing is quite questionable for a song competition but the heavenly emotion it strikes you with doesn't leave any space for doubting.
2 2005 9,5
Legendary entry! It rocked hard and should have won.
3 1996 9,5
An other heavenly anthem by Norway. Pure beauty!! Ireland was very good but Norway should have won again.
4 2013 9,0
Amazingly Charming!! It deserved at least the 2nd place if not victory.
5 2014 9,0
What a marvellous heart-breaking ballad!! It gives me shivers every time I listen to it. But I only listen. I never watch the presentation. This says much.
6 2003 8,5
A really great composition. Very powerful ballad. But the guy was really struggling to sing it. It still deserved the good place it got among great entries but it definitely didn't stand at its best potentials.
7 2015 8,0
Wonderfully dramatic duet. An other seriously adorable entry.
8 2009 8,0
Very powerful song but something annoyed me in Alex Rybak. In 2018 I understood I was right.
9 2006 8,0
Beautiful representation of Norway. A gorgeous Norwegian beauty sharing with us northern sounds of heaven.
10 2008 7,5
Good melody, proper performance, a more than decent entry.
11 2016 7,5
I'm one of those who mostly liked the weirdness of this composition. And the performer helped it a lot to shine.
12 2001 7,0
I seriously adore this melody!
13 1992 7,0
Quite weird song but interesting. A better presentation (omg how horrible styling! But ok it was early 90s) would have helped much.
14 1993 7,0
The composition is not exactly thrilling but the girl is pure velvet. The song takes me somewhere so it's quite enjoyable.
15 2007 6,5
I wouldn't expect latin from Norway. I wasn't amazed since I already had high expectations from Norway but it was ok.
16 2010 6,5
The one and only handsome Norwegian guy. I don't know, either Norway has no gorgeous men or they don't share them with Eurofans. So many beautiful women and just this man. The song should be ok and I kind of like this genre but something didn't work great.
17 2017 6,5
I see what is to be appreciated about this but it's not quite my thing. Just ok.
18 1989 6,0
Nice ballad. Just missing something.
19 1994 6,0
Cute but not extraordinary melody. Powerful voices but the guy's face is so annoying that distracts me from fully enjoying this.
20 1998 6,0
The guy has some charm and lots of charisma but the song doesn't help him much. Just nicy. Not big stuff.
I’m not a fan of the aurovision from Norway 2019, but everything else. Love it!!. I am from Norway. Love the country😊 fairytale, haba haba and monster like me❤️
Let me know if you need transelation😉
han snakker så jævlig mye, han må holde kjeft
pleas turn up the music volume
1971: Don't you see, it's a parasol, not an umbrella. Today that would be considered "lolita style".
You should hear out runner up the year Didrik Solli tangen was chosen to represent us
Keep of kalessin- dragon tower, if you wonder. Would have won the whole thing
I’m still so annoyed that Keep of Kalasin’s _Dragontower_ didn’t get sendt to Eurovision in 2010.
4:00 "Gammel mann" means "old man" since you were wondering ha ha :)
Argh 2012... The one year I was active in the voting, I was SO MAD when Stay won. I was all for Plumbo's Ola Nordmann, but no smh
Fairytale and my time are my favourite 2009 songs
Gammel mann= Old man
Dukkemann= doll man
And the 1980 song is not in Sami, it’s in Norwegian, but they were “joiking” which is a way of singing is Sami.
Fairytail is one of the best Eurovision entries in history!
For me, my favourite entry from Norway probably is 2015. I do love 2011 and 1985 tho.
Also does anyone else think that Spain Should've won in 1995 and not Norway or is it just me?
(I do love Norway 1995 tho)
Didn't Jan Teigen manage to get the first zero in the total score?
«Alvedansen» means elf dance
Småting means little things or small things
My favourites in 90's 1994 and 1996
«Gammel mann» means «Old man» and «dukkemann» means «puppet man»
It’s not easy for an orchestra to play lots of songs perfectly in one evening, but if the Paris 1978 orchestra had played better, Etter Mil would’ve been smashing imo.
ESCunited Oh ok good! Keep up the good work :) Rollercoaster is def the best way to describe Norway's results!
My favourite Norwegian entries are 1995, 2009, 2013, 2017, 2018
The most iconic performance is still th 1978 one. 0 point. Iconic. Of course we kept sending him back.
Mil etter mil is a classic. How did it end up last?
It was the most successful last place and zero points of them all. Jahn Teigen became a big star in Norway after that.
1978 turned down Genesis when they offered him the gig as their lead vocalist.
