- Today we are going to talk about how to store firewood cookies, chunks and odd shaped pieces to best help them dry. You don't want them just sitting on the ground to go to waste! So watch and see how I make the best use of mine in the cookie bin/house!

I saw this after I built boxes for my chunks, but I'll stick with my boxes and maybe make some more. If I could upload photos I would.
Some of my first free firewood was from a huge elm tree of which half broke off and fell in some people's yard. Not having a lot of equipment and NO prior experience, I spent the better part of a week making a trip in the morning and a trip in the evening in 100 degree weather (just about 3 miles each way), cutting up that tree into chunks I could lift and throw into my Tacoma. I got some nice logs, many of which are split by axe and maul, dried and burned already, and some that are still sitting on pallets and drying.
But I also got lots of gnarley, knotty, twisty crotch pieces that I could only cut up with the chainsaw. I searched and searched for ideas to contain them so they could dry, and found nothing,
I finally formed my own idea, and built six box frames from pressure treated 2x4s and exterior coated screws left over from building a backyard playset for my son ten years ago. The boxes are 18"W 36"L and 24"H. I covered the inside with chicken wire to contain the chunks and allow them to breathe. Then I set the boxes on concrete blocks. Then when I needed to move a couple of them around, I added a cross piece 2x4 on the bottom so I can get a dolly under it and move it around, even full of chunks. It cost more than your pallet box, and they don't hold as much, but they do look nice and obviously I don't create as many chunks just cutting firewood for home use.

Just yesterday in the bush splitting and stacking it started to pour rain so hard I crawled under the trailer to stay dry untill it passed. A first for everything.. I did see bugs I never knew existed down there though. Lol

It’s Mikey have you ever thought of cutting those hallow logs into 3 inch thick cookies and sell them to guys that make resin coffee tables(live edge). I do I get around $30 to $50 a round depending on type of wood! You’ll have to sticker them and let them dry out but you have the space. Just a thought. Thank you for making these videos I watch them with my dad.

That's awesome finally seeing someone using the wood pieces like you are, alot people I see on UA-cam are just giving that stuff away.
Last year I sold about 3 full cords worth of cookies. So , they are worth something and you can burn them yourself too!
How about IBC totes with the container removed and use chicken wire to keep the wood inside? Then using the tractor with forks, you can move them around. Load up at the cutting pile and store them anywhere. Be pretty convenient tooad up the cookies into the totes where hou cut snd use the tractor. Then using the container itself, cut it up to make a roof for the portable cookie cage.

Like the new cookie jar! Good idea. Loading those cookies would have been easier with a tractor😂 My guess is that your getting a new Kioti CK series. Prob the 4010. Equipped with the KL 4030 loader. Since everyone else is guessing I thought I would throw mine out there! Can’t wait to see you ripping around the yard on your new tractor! GNI

I have seen other wood processors use IBC (Intermediate Bulk Containers) totes for firewood. They move them around with a tractor with forks. Maybe this would be a good solution for you once you get that new tractor you have been teasing us with.
For some people they are fine but not for me, I would need about 700 to start with and at $25-$30 each....$20,000ish it would not be worth it for me.
@@InTheWoodyard The people that use these that I have seen on UA-cam get them for free from local manufacturers. Even so, I agree, that would be a lot of totes.

You can do alot with a tractor but they DON'T stack firewood his arms and shoulders will still be soar

Good system for the cookies. I started a similar thing using pallets this season too. It basically means customers get the nice tidy looking wood and we burn the uglies here at home. It does not stack so well but they burn fine, so everyone is happy.
Very true! I do sell them too, mostly to guys who heat with wood.
I like the way you do things. Like the way you built the cookie bin. Also the wood pieces you rake up could be fed into a chipper/shredder to make mulch and you could bag it or sell it bulk. This would be a good idea since you are buying a tractor. Have a great day be safe.

I take the liner out of the IBC totes and cut the top off drill drainage holes in them and nail them to a pallet. You could also buy the 1/3 cord wood bags and set them on pallets. I use both.

It seems in your travels you would learn some interesting firewood storage ideas from clients and family. I like your dad's method of seasoning 1 year per inch of thickness. I'd like to do that but I need the fuel before it sits that long. Btw you and your friend may find even more local history about doc bradley as he owned and directed a funeral home as a career in Appleton.

So that means today is a better day, heat sucks! I mentioned you in a video I shot yesterday at a buddies house, we where talking pickaroons and handles. It won't be out for a couple weeks though...stockpiling!

Where I am in North Carolina if you stack up green rounds endgrain to endgrain you almost always get mold to grow... you ever have that issue in Wisconsin?

I'm gonna have to build one of these I think. I keep oak, hickory and cherry chunks separate from all the other chunks though. So I may need to build a bunch of them.
I will probably start using IBC totes.
Maybe you should have built the cookie bin 12’ x 4’ deep or so instead of the 7’x7’, that way you could fill it with the Massey Ferguson red tractor your getting. Loader May not get to the back of the 7x7 bin to dump in. Just a thought. And easier to throw the cookies out into the truck or trailer. Any way. Have a good day.

In north America there are hundreds of thousands of bears that are hunted for their delicious meat and hides kind of like farmers with cows, chickens, pigs, sheep, ducks, fish, turkeys and other animals that we all eat, they feed them butcher them and we all eat them. Some people kill plants/vegetables and eat them. Baiting with food in a hollow log to draw the bear into close range stalking and using dogs to push the bears to hunters are all legal and widely used methods to take them.

Mine is a 2015 also it has the 5.7. I have 171k on it . I have only done tires, brakes, battery, plugs, struts and regular maintenance. Best truck I ever had and I have had furds and chebbies!

All the loggers cut to100" here in the lake states, it's a paper mill thing from long ago.
@@InTheWoodyard u could request saw mill length.. which is 16+ 8 footers are for the pulp side... it helps that I cut my baged wood at 12" and stove at 16"... gives me less waste at the end..
