He's done it before- Torchwood was a great adult-targeted show that was darker and dealt with heavier subjects while Sarah Jane was the BEST show for kids like me to tie them over when Doctor Who wasn't on.When the stolen earth premiered it was the ONLY thing we talked about in class, it was like Christmas. RTD understands fans and how to target people with his stories, he's written very personal stories in everything he's done, the problem Who had was that they didn't know who to write for: The casual watcher, the diehard fan, or kids.

The problem with resetting the series numbering is: what stops the next showrunner doing the same thing? It's gonna get really confusing when we have a new series 1 every few years.

Honestly, That might not be a bad idea. DW is always gonna encounter the issue of season numbering getting too big to the point it scares of potential new viewers. I feel maybe treating each Doctors era as its own run might be useful, kinda like how in the US, the collection box sets are labeled 'Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor, Season 1,' as opposed to Season 12. Still has problems, but it's one idea...

When it comes to the spin offs it is a valid point in it's favour that Russell has done it before, but I have to bring up the problem of how Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood were all shows for different age groups. If the age groups are the same then crossing over works as the audience can watch every piece of the build up, but how many people who grew up watching the Sarah Jane Adventures were allowed to watch Torchwood, I know for a fact I didn't and so was bewildered as to the Torchwood stuff in Stolen Earth/Journey's End. And there's probably a lot of vice versa for people who watched Torchwood but not Sarah Jane Adventures. Simply put this problem could become worse if there are more than just the two spin offs.
And just to continue on Russell's MCU point, the problem with that could be that there become too many spin offs that detract from the main show, given how that's the key difference between Doctor Who and the MCU, the fact it will be spin offs rather than a shared universe so how they interact will be key. Alternatively there could be a stretch could be with writers and production.
And on a final point about this, what happens when Russell leaves? Could this damage the future of the show beyond Russell's era? If this is all of Russell's design then his successor may have other ideas and either be forced into continuing with the format, leading to sloppier content or a lot of people who don't understand what they're doing get brought in.
While Russell is the best person for this, as far as we're aware at least, this has the potential to go downhill very badly. I'm already concerned about how it may alienate the core audience and lead to a series being made just for the casual audience or a completely new audience who don't care about what came before. I simply don't want to lose this show because of a risky decision again, again

Don't underestimate the silliness of us 2008 kids, we had the internet AND iPlayer! 😂
Oh yeah, we knew what Torchwood was, even if we shouldn't have been watching it...
And after seeing them in Doctor Who, I ended up watching Children of Earth out of curiosity. Which horrified me, but it's fine.

Lol no mate. Chris Chibnall killed Doctor Who. The Whoniverse is literally an attempt at bringing the corpse back to life. You might say, it's a regeneration.

honestly sounds like theyve got involved with disney aand someone is whispering in his ear. The MCU is absolutely awful and i can fully see the showrunners for Doctor Who with dollar signs in their eyes. theres no way they partner with Disney and they dont make it a sharted universe. FFS

I like the idea of The Whoniverse and I think the complaints about it are unjustified, he wants a unified approach to the main show and the spin-offs instead of a fractured presentation RTD knows that the franchise has been splintered for a while both with how it is marketed and the fans being divided, honestly the majority of this video is pathetically petty and for some reason you seem to be desperate to criticise literally ANY aspect of whatever Davies is presenting

the only reason the mcu is now shit is they went past the use by date on it. after infinity saga there just isnt any where to go where the stakes are higher the only thing savining it is when they bring back early 2000s characters back like toby spider man and xmen. doctor who has the freedom of not having to rely on a source material. the key is the feel of the show if they for high budget over bloated messes every episode it wont work. the beauty of doctor who was it was campy the costumes were low budget and simple. and bring in new threats dont rely to heavily on the old ones to carry the show

I’m not a fan of RTD. He never wrote the Doctor properly injecting flirtatious romantic crap into it. Only Moffat was brave enough to give us an older more aloof alien Doctor. I’m not a fan of this whole Whoniverse rubbish. Seeing that Disney logo on everything is annoying. Murray Gold’s new theme tune sounds dreadful and I prefer Segun Akinola. You say it’s good we’ll get a more emotional Doctor! Why? He’s an alien not a human. The Doctor was never highly emotional in Classic Who and nor was he ever flirtatious. Now we have the most overrated Doctor dominating the Anniversary specials. They should have found a new show runner or better still a team working on this show because RTD is backtracking massively.

What tf do you mean "Disastrous end to Jodie Whittaker's run"?
"More emotion than 13. Her most emotional scene was when she killed a scene" this is not true.
And no RTD isn't going to "save" Doctor Who as it doesn't need saving. He's just going to make the show bigger than ever before so to answer your question: no The Whoniverse won't kill it.

@@umbai8962 no he didn't. If anything Chibnall SAVED the show. Had it not been for him the show would not have been made in 2021. Though they weren't sure if the show would continue past 2022 due to not being able to find a showrunner, this has proved to be a recurring issue, it's not an issue caused by the outgoing showrunner.

@@friendlyotaku9525sorry but Chibnall didn't "save" Doctor Who. Granted the ratings were dropping ever since Matt Smith left except for a bump when the 13th doctor first appeared but soon after they dropped again like an anvil, and Chibnall was only allowed to finish his run by social media pressure, probably some blackmail and maybe even some sexual favors. Can RTD save Who, with everything I've heard about this run, I doubt it.

@@friendlyotaku9525 actually Russell T Davies save Doctor Who from cancelation, otherwise they were just going to cancel it and let it sit and let people forget Chibnall disastrous run on the show. If you're too stupid not to have realized that I almost feel sorry for you. RTD asked the BBC to let Chibnall give Whittaker a fitting end and keep the show going until Davies was ready to take over.

A expanded universe for the Doctor could be cool but RTD needs to keep it focused on the stuff most Who fans watch Who for, the sci fi/ horror elements. Take the rumored UNIT spin-off for example, it doesn't need to be Torchwood 2.0. It should be men and women in uniforms, fighting aliens and supernatural threats. It's shouldn't be people wearing trendy clothes, having romances with each other, no LGBTQ plus storylines for the cast, or if there are it should be so small and irrelevant that it has no bearing on the show in any way. Unit suppose to be a professional military force not a covert secret agency like Torchwood and the show will only work if they keep it professional. I know this is a lot to ask nowadays but RTD please keep these stories aimed at Who fans not new age soap opera watchers.
