One of my favorite techniques is using the wedges but you do it a little different than I do. Will try it your way next time. That steel mill is spot on fantastic. And so are the cars. Wow.
Excellent video. Useful tips. Thanks for posting. I found a way to get very realistic rust on my track spikes - although not exactly quick ... (they were salvaged from a previous layout that was stored in a damp environment for many years).
Nice technique and very effective results! I was really impressed by the bottle cars! Thanks for sharing your ideas, as always. I've been checking out your work ever since seeing your inexpensive gondola loads video. Your daughter is delightful!
I watched the whole video and it was superb! I've seen some videos on weathering/rusting but yours is by far the best. Wow! That was awesome! Happy railroading my friend! Gary
djstrains I hope you get the track plan the way you want this time. I am a bit concerned you soon will be thinking of layout 31, ha ha. If you do that, I must find a way convincing you to keep this building for the Next layout:) And I actually put tougether and then took apart two testtracks Close to the time you made the tare Down video (my own fault lol) Happy holliday and modelling:) JC
Guy in my club used actual rust. He scraped it off of some scrap iron, pulverized it to a fine powder and adhered it to his project (rolling stock in this case) with hair spray.
Cool videos!!!! where's your source for your blast furnace?!?!?.. walthers had one but has been discontinued. Any more tips in that topic or steel mills in general would be great! I'm very new to the model railroading and working on a layout now that will run along my livingroom walls. My dad used to work for Bethlehem Steel back in the 70's and really want to do a blast furnace and steel mill section on my layout as tribute to him! I know he would love it and he will be seeing your vids too!!!! :) very cool!!!
that is a major problem in n scale. Walthers discontinued their steel mill kits. Now the only way to find one built or unbuilt is eBay or model railroad forums and Facebook groups. Good luck, and call walthers and tell them to rerelease that series.
Great video - one suggestion....why not use a rattle can with red/rust oxide primer color for your base color and then hit it with your sponge technique on top of that? could save you alot of time on your base coating and provide a great even rust color for your sponge detail. Fantastic technique here that can be applied to all types of scenery, buildings and rolling stock if your patient enough. Thanks for sharing this wonderful technique!!! helps us modelers out here who just don't want to shell out the $$$ for an airbrush!!!
I use red oxide rustoluem spray paint then tone it with black washes of the cheap $1 spray paint that doesn't have any coverage, that gives a decent look with relatively no work. I also found out that you can get a beautiful texture if you spray the red oxide in 100 degree (F) weather (yay Florida). The paint drys before it makes contact with the part and makes the paint mimic not only the color but the feel of rusting metal
Nice opening DJ. I really enjoy your videos,,, is there any way you can up the sound a bit,,, you usually sound as if you are at a distance sir. This video,,, I use several methods in applying colors from make up sponges to spray paint to dry brushing,,, all have their uses but I far and away prefer the sponges for aging. With any paint, experiment with everything. If you do not like it, go over it again. Thanks DJ!!
shotgun mic. If I get to close it ends up in the shot or the shadow gets in the way. Sometimes I wear a lapel mic, but it is a pain to set up when I am short on time. turning my mic up too loud brings a hiss.
Looks really great DJ, how did you come up with that color combination? How do you like your new [CSX] logo, railfan friends I talked to think its stupid. NS will be getting all the CSX SD80MACs I heard. Have you had the chance to operate one and whats your opinion of those units?
trial and error. I knew there had to be purple in that mix. I don't like the box car logo. I don't care for most of our MACs. they bounce around, and are noisy. NS can have em. :)
Are you still assembling weathering and selling complete kits on ebay. I'm ready for another couple. If so whats your ebay way of finding you on ebay ... Thanks ... Brian
@@djstrains Thank You Sir ... I was up in North Dakota and bought a couple of your steel mill structures and would like to have more ... Thanks ... BRIAN
I live in Jeannette but work alliquippa and also newell to new castle or connellsville to new castle runs. I stopped working new castle to Ohio in 2006.
So can you show us how you did the BF stoves and torpeado cars. Try putting some slag skulls on your slag dump and you could try using el wire for the slag dump for the lighting. TIA
djstrains the stoves can't be the same colours, there`s a metallic grey look to them. The rust/dust caked material might be the same 4 colours but not the stove stack and the part of the stoves showing the metallic grey. So what do think of the slag skull idea?
Great How-To, DJ!! Steel Mills are big, ugly, imposing structures - of COURSE we want to model them!!! :P That's a nice technique for large areas of surface rust. I will NEED to remember that one!! *Especially* "Plum Black"... Never, ever heard of that one before! PS: your co-host did a great job! ;)
+Chandra Shegar Thanks. I know, right! She has been in a couple videos. I do worry, because one guy made an inappropriate comment to me in an email, and now I worry about creeps out there. She comes first. She has her own layout that she plays with (it's hysterical). She likes the cars and buildings but doesn't care about the trains much.
I've had those paints for years, painting landscapes and have separate paints for models, but never used them for weathering. Great idea!
Color looks incredible! Nice technique DJ! Thanks for sharing!
One of my favorite techniques is using the wedges but you do it a little different than I do. Will try it your way next time. That steel mill is spot on fantastic. And so are the cars. Wow.
This is a really good way of doing rust. thanks for sharing. Going to try this in the morning on some of my stuff.
Great video DJ. I always look forward to your videos. Keep up the great work.
Nice video and technique DJ. Looking forward to your next one. Cheers, Kevin
Great video, great little girl. I have two granddaughters in that age group. Found your videos the other day. Super!
Looks great DJ! Thanks for the tips!
Haha "yea toughen up" awesome video DJ! I never thought of using plum black. Ill have to pick some up. Thanks for sharing this man. Later, John
Great how to video, DJ!! This is a great technique which I will put to use..... one day!!! Thanks for posting!
Great how to vid DJ definitely saving it for future when I get to my structures. That rust sure looks life like. Really well done.
I always look forward to your videos DJ, so much good information in every one of them!
You make this look so easy! Black Plum is the secret - I will have to find that. Thanks for the video.
Your models at the end look as close to the real thing as you can get. Thanks a lot for the tutorial. RT
Excellent video. Useful tips. Thanks for posting.

I like the freedom this technique gives you.
me too. It is fun
DJ - great job, love them sponges.. This does a super job and as you said can't be any cheaper or easier to clean up..
Thanks again..
Awesome introduction!! 😊
My steel mill build will need this, thanks. Robert
Nice technique and very effective results! I was really impressed by the bottle cars! Thanks for sharing your ideas, as always. I've been checking out your work ever since seeing your inexpensive gondola loads video. Your daughter is delightful!
I love her more than words. She is so funny and just a happy child in general.
I watched the whole video and it was superb! I've seen some videos on weathering/rusting but yours is by far the best. Wow! That was awesome! Happy railroading my friend! Gary
Thanks, I appreciate that! :)
Great build and weathering job DJ! Looking forward to see it on your layout:)
Cheers JC
Me too. I still need to rework that whole area's track plan first.

Excellent tips.

hey DJ... great technique... thanks for sharing... vinny
Thanks Vinny. I didn't invent it, but I am finding it very useful.
Nice one, DJ! Looks awesome!
Best?
John
Thanks for the tips John !
Looks awesome

DJ, Neat tip. Have you tried using one of the larger foam brushes available at most home improvement stores?
Nice job. The tips and techniques are helpful and the videos are well done. Great models you have there. Enjoy.
Useful tip.. Looking forward to the next video..
great how to. looking at using that on other type buildings. do you use any type of clear coat, flat or gloss on any of it?
sometimes I use dullcote.
Excellent video, like you i am hopeless at spraying so i will give this a try!
This excellent video, a great help for painting my blast furnace

Those makeup sponges work great!!!.....Good tip.....

Jason D. Reece You can, I think I was out of it at the time, lol.

my last mill was done that way and came out great. However, it is cold as heck in Pa lately, so I have to stay in the garage to paint. :(
great looking nice
did you scratch build that or is it a kit ?
Great how to video, thanks.
Great video! Looks like a lot of progress is being made. Quick question, how big is your avalible space for modeling?
Another great video DJ. Love the rust effect
Great video and tips! I took notes!
Glad it was helpful!
Looking good.
What are the wedges used for as I havent seen them in the UK
Ernie Stammers for womens makeup

Very cool tip !
Very informative. I learned something new .
Glad you liked it
Thanks great Tip's
Glynn
Nice technique when working without an airbrush.

Nice DJ looks really nice same with the cars. P.S. How's work going
just got called to work same time you asked that, lol! Nothing new. I'm just trying to make the best of it, and am grateful for any day without snow.
djstrains I would think it would be nice in the snow but I guess its harder to get going on wet rails and walkways +visability
You said you are from western Pennsylvania? Im from New Castle, PA

GetSmart008 Stoves were same technique and colors. Torpedo cars I did just multiple coats with a paint brush and variety of colors and chalks.
djstrains the stoves can't be the same colours, there`s a metallic grey look to them. The rust/dust caked material might be the same 4 colours but not the stove stack and the part of the stoves showing the metallic grey. So what do think of the slag skull idea?

how utterly adorable 😊
She is 18 now and is the greatest kid in the world! We are still very close.
@ They grow up so fast don't they?
Thank you, great video
Nice Vid,thx! Your little munchkin is really cute.Would she help in your projects? Would love to see that cute face more :)

Looks like old Pittsburgh!
That is all the prototype photos, and my goal for my layout! :)
