Akerne Orchids is located in Schoten in the northern part of Antwerp, Belgium. It’s a family based orchid nursery, selling mostly divisions of their collection plants and seedlings, many of which are from seeds of their own plants. They have a huge private collection of mostly pure species of most of the genera.
They were the ones, many, many years ago that helped me with all the necessary info and knowledge and got me started seriously in the orchid hobby. For me, they are one of the best, “real’ orchid nurseries still going in Europe.
They mainly focus on species orchids in all temperature ranges and aim to propagate their plants by division or seed.
It all started as a Hobby that grew out of hand. Making them certainly the leading nursery in Belgium and possibly Europe.
In this series, together with the owners of the nursery, I would like to show you how a good orchid nursery works and thrives. Over several episodes we hope to give a lot of good info over to the more experienced and novice orchid grower, combined with showing beautiful (very large) plants and of course a lot of orchid flowers.

Now I'm beginning to be interested to grow orchids. My mother used to have few orchids when I was young. I like it when she spends time in her small garden every morning. She then put a small cofee table there and chairs and her friends would come and they will spend time there sharing stories together. My mom was so.proud showing the blooms to her friends

I do like your visits to Akerne, everything so neat in their rows. You choose so well, always the more unusual. Do they grow all their orchids (those potted) in bark? Another observation, the orchids in the warm/intermediate greenhouse looked as though the sprinklers had recently been on, is it a fine must system, as it didn't seem to affect those in bloom. Thanks Margaret, They indeed are the best nursery around in Europe (combined with MSB). They grow all their orchids in bark, nothing else. Depending on the needs of the plant, the size of bark may be different. The sprinklers go on and of with a fine mist when needed. The drops on the leaves was after watering, this I'll show on another video. Thanks again for watching, a lot more to come and yes,subscribers seem to go up a bit.
Such an impressive video! Being In Canada, I am not familiar with this nursery. A wonderfully run establishment. Everything is orderly and pristine. I appreciate that you take the time to show the plant and it's ID. Drives me crazy to not have a name on a plant.
Great orchid choices. The plants are immaculate. They were packed with such care! Love the tillandsia choices too. My tillandsia Betty (xerographica hybrid) is blooming. It's a guess since the Botanical gardens here in Montreal don't label their tillandsia anymore.
To me, they are the best orchid nursery in Europe, growing almost all their orchids as divisions or seedling from their own plants. They do their best to keep everything pristine and that for a family run business. It’ been this way for as long as I know them and that’s for over 30 years! I hate it when people show flowers without a name, so I take notes although I sometimes forget too. Yillandsia’s are part of my orchid hobby and I have a nice collection of them too, they grow all together. Thanks for watching and yor wonderful comment.
Hallo Marc, great look into this nursery but it's a pity that the online shop has hardly any phots and further description of the plants. But the prices are great,
The shop is just being renewed and more work needs done. They are working on it but the plants come first, there's always google. I rather have no or correct info than a bunch of wrong info, just put there to sell as most shopsdo.
