  • Join us in a trip from France to the UK. In July, 1998, Hoverspeed Fast Ferries celebrated 30 years of service by its first commercial hovercraft, the Princess Margaret (a sister to the Princess Anne). The last crossing was in 2000.
The SR.N4 (Saunders-Roe Nautical 4) hovercraft (also known as the Mountbatten class hovercraft) was designed to carry 254 passengers in two cabins besides a four-lane automobile bay which held up to 30 cars. The type has the distinction of being the largest civil hovercraft to have ever been put into service.

The Hovercraft should make a return to ease the traffic at the Ferry port at Dover during holiday periods

This is probably one of the best video's showing the SRN4 in operation. An amazing piece of engineering

WHY on earth they did not just build updated new versions of these wonderful craft as it was faster than the channel tunnel AND the old ferries. Once again the UK inventing a ground breaking machine and then BINNING THEM (along with trains, Concorde, Harrier etc)🤬 GREAT VIDEO.

Because it burned a LOT of fuel, it was great though, especially compared to like the daytime slow boat. later there was just the Seacat left until that also disappeared. I think that took like 2 hours, and 4 hours from the UK to Ireland, and this was like half an hour or so.
