Platform 0 at donny is for Northern local services for Scunthorpe and Hull. Noticeable too that Platform 0 is not electrified and opened at the end of 2016
Platform 0 at Doncaster is used by trains to/from Hull that terminate there (obvs not those that run through to Sheffield). The plaza at the front of Doncaster station is new, and a huge improvement on the car park that used to be there, giving a much more welcoming setting for people arriving in the town and people heading for a train.
The station at Mexborough used to have a third line behind the island platform. Many years ago, Mexborough used to have a steam loco stabling and fuelling shed just to the left as you head back to Swinton, on the old passenger line to Sheffield, used before the current Swinton Station opened in1990. They were there until steam ended in the late 1960s. They were special built engines used to double up on banking duty to help haul heavy coal trains. The huge Manvers Coal Complex and Wath Marshalling Yard were nearby. The engines helped haul the heavy trains up the Woodhead Line to head for Manchester.
Exploring Yorkshire and the Humber Day 4 was yet another fantastic Vlog G When you arrived at Doncaster Railway Station it certainly brought back some fond memories of visiting Doncaster on numerous occasions Il agree with you Swinton is definitely a brilliant location to film Trains at I continue to enjoy watching your Vlogs G carry on being awesome keep up the good work take care and stay safe and I look forward to Day 5 of Exploring Yorkshire and the Humber by Teain
I used to catch the train to Leeds every day from Bentley and its amusing to see it hasn't changed one bit! They were campaigning for a bridge between platforms because you could arrive at the station 10 minutes early for a train and still miss it due to the amount of traffic going through it keeping the road barriers down.. and yup people would hop over it! The dot matrix display wasn't there at Adwick back then so at least that has had an upgrade!
7:01 been donny few times with a friend mostly to plane spot at the inevitably closing doncaster sheffield airport im even considering a return to the airport just to hear vulcan bomber XH558 do engine run ups even if its to hear the earie howel
Great video, good to point out the braille on the hand rail, Doncaster looks amazing station Yorkshire is very interesting to travel around looking forward to seeing the rest of your vlogs ✅✅👍👍
Swinton (South Yorkshire) is a lovely location and the views from the footbridge to capture trains is awesome. The island platform platform 3 is for trains coming from Doncaster but they can be held there for trains which speed through via Moorthrope to get to York Wakefield (which you mentioned in the video) The Hull services terminate at Doncaster on platform 0, they used to terminate on platform 1 but had to do a Empty stock movement to clear the platform to allow East Coast Trains or Virgin Trains East Coast at the time before LNER to use platform 1 as Doncaster is a very busy station. Awesome video G and nice to see the Class 91 at Bentley
My childhood home was near there, that's the 3rd Swinton Station serving that line, it opened around 32 years ago. The very first station was roughly where the current one is now. The replacement was bigger and built on the opposite side of the road/rail bridge, some of the buildings are an industrial unit now. and it closed in the late 1960s. There was originally 2 stations in the town, the other was on the old Sheffield to Doncaster line and that closed around 1960. That line closed to service passenger trains when the current Swinton Station opened. The old Swinton curve line was re-laid to allow passenger trains to get to the old Barnsley-Mexborough line and onwards to Doncaster again from the Sheffield-Leeds line.
@High Path I haven't personally used it since lockdown started, but it was still doing a Sunday Sheffield-Leeds stopping train. Friends use it and haven't said it's stopped running. I'm not sure if there are fewer trains at the moment, or if they still stop at all stations on Sunday as some trains on weekdays miss out some smaller stations
Core route for Sheffield Conductors (SHF-MHS-RMC-SWN-MEX-CNS-DON-BYK-AWK) Swn PT1 Leeds and Doncaster bound, Swn PT2 and 3 are Sheffield bound Cns - Building is someone's house now PT0 @ Don - Northern services to Hull and Scunthorpe
So you visited Swinton in South Yorkshire near Mexborough and Rotherham. And not Swinton in Greater Manchester that is not too far from Manchester and close to Salford. Never knew that Northern has 2 railway stations of the same name but in 2 different locations and different counties. Very impressive. Keep up the good work. 👍
Used to travel through Swinton from Mirfield to Rotherham Masborough on a Blackpool to Derby train, calling at Thornhill, Royston, Cudworth, Wath Swinton and Rawmarsh. Ten coaches and steam hauled.
Doncaster is my home station. And any support for a new station at Askern my home town is welcome too. We still in the bidding war for the money in the local project funding by the government
Number of platforms at Rotherham? I reckon two and two half-platforms. The tram-trains stop at platforms numbered 3 and 4, which are lower height mini-extensions to the existing 1 and 2, because the door/floor heights are different between the trains and tram-trains. Just beyond where you turned back on the TP trail by Conisbrough is a humungous disused viaduct which you can walk over (and under). Worth a trip, but not in the rain
It's a shame you didn't have time at Conisbrough to walk half a mile from the station and see Conisbrough Castle. It's famous, and one of the finest preserved ruined castles, dating back to the Norman conquest.
The beauty of South Yorkshire so well described by you G fantastic Vblog as always sorry it was a bit of a wet day thank goodness for those shelters here's to day 5 next week! 👍🙂
The line through Central remained open, I did it on a railtour once. Sometime around the late ‘80s they decided to close Masborough and divert all services via a re-opened Central. What remained of the station, I think the platforms still existed, was rebuilt at that time, which is why the station looks fairly new.
I don't go around the old Masbrough station area very often since the new station opened. A few years ago, the Masbrough station buildings had been made into an Indian restaurant and takeaway.
@@brianwhittington5086 Were there not three stations in Swinton - the Midland One, the GC (LNER) One at the other end by what was the ink/bitumen works and something near one of the two yards (LMS Coal / LNER Loco Shed for Mexborough ?(
@High Path No there's only ever been two stations in Swinton, one on each main line. I used to live in between them both as a kid, but one had already closed. That is the one just a few hundred yards around the curve from Mexborough. Mexborough loco shed was between the two, near the GEC works- now Morphy Richards. @@brianwhittington5086 Cheers, the other I was thinking of was Wath. ( and should we send the Whitewicks along a walk of the route of the Dearne District Light Railway ?)
@High Path Yes, you're correct,Wath had 3 railway stations, once upon a time in the early 1900s and pre British Rail days. All on Station Road, that lead on into Bolton upon Dearne are now long gone and the only sign being some of the buildings are houses or other use. Snottytastic video ❤️ The Sheffield to Doncaster local service used to be every 30 minutes but was cut down, there is incredibly still parts of the day where it runs every few hours. Swinton station reopened in 1990 when the curve was reintroduced between Swindon and Mexborough station which was taken out in the 1960s Local stopping services to Hull and services to Scunthorpe when the latter is reintroduced again stop at platform 0 at Doncaster. Services to Meadowhall (and ideally a full stop at Parkgate) can be very busy, as to if locals rather than onwards either to Bentley or Humberside area are better I dont know. Doncaster used to be a hive of Class 55 Deltic activity until the early 80s. Spent many hours of our youth in both Sheffield and Doncaster, ending up on the station until the last train home. You would regularly see Deltics stabled outside Doncaster Locomotive Works at the side of the station in case one failed. You certainly knew when one was idling on platform, or on the fast through lines, you could feel and hear the unique vibrating hum they had. Even better when one shot flames of fuel oil out of the roof exhausts when revved up after idling, good job Greta Thunberg wasn't around in the 70s to see that.😆🫣

Great vlog G. Great collection of stations! The only station I’ve been to along this section is Doncaster a few years ago lol. I enjoyed watching as always.
Utterly brilliant as per always G. I used to travel through Doncaster a lot, what is now 32 years ago! I suspect before you were born. British Rail then. Your film brought back great memories.
Excellent video as always, G 👍 Rotherham Central was totally redeveloped around 10 years ago, which is why it looks so new, and now the trams use the same tracks as the Northern services calling there South Elmsall and Moorthorpe stations are indeed about 20 minutes walk from each other along Barnsley Road (and there's an Asda and Aldi about midway between the two stations) I love the thumbnail as well, so I'll have to remember to do that pose whenever I'm at one of the Swinton stations 🤣
Brilliant video as always, I've been through that other Swinton a few times but not got off there yet lol. It's nice to see you visited Doncaster station, I've been there and it's brilliant, right next door to the LNER's former works where famous steam engines such as the Flying Scotsman and the Mallard were built. Lumo go through Donny but don't call there so I think you've named all the TOC's that stop there which is quite a few indeed lol. Looking forward to your next adventure as always. :)
That idea of the Braille on the handrails to show the platform numbers at Swinton is a really good one. Have you ever had a strange look from anyone as you record the "knickers on the head" segment?! 😆
As always G you provide us with a witty, fun, educational vlog, love how you edit your vlogs, the pacing is just right (and I'm not talking about your walking). Looking forward to the next one, stay safe.
I’ve always love all types of transport but if someone would have told me a while ago I’d be watching videos on train stations I’d have laughed but you make these videos such fun they are addictive to watch and just so happy. It’s even encouraged me to venture out to places and I walked that Chirk tunnel you did on the last day of North Wales the other day. Blimey, it’s so unnerving but I beautiful area. Thanks G & big up The Wigginn 🤣🤣
Hey G wow wow your in my home town Sheffield .... Do u like sheffield then or not .... Been on all of them stations where u going now ..... What u think of stations and trains up in Yorkshire then .....💯😊💯
Been on this line many times when going from Manchester to Doncaster for the racing, nice line and need to do it again soon, last time i went the Donny the following week Lockdown began
Every disused station building I see on your channel now seems to me as a wasted opportunity to be repurposed as holiday accommodation for magic Christmas breaks like the one you had. I am familiar with Swinton Gtr Manchester - I am partially traumatised to learn there is another one lol !! Lidl - with its baked goods - has done much to help our emergency services - the closure of so many Police and Ambulance stations has made our local Lidl THE place for our local services to get something affordable to eat and provide a bog for them - I no longer worry when I see an Ambulance or a Police car in the car park - the only emergency they are attending to is the need for a Pretzel or a Pain au Raisin with a cappuccino
Excellent video, G! It's definitely a good strategy to head in the opposite direction to the main flow of traffic so that you end up on quieter trains. Doncaster looked like a much nicer station than I imagined it would be!
Rotherham Central is still around. I think you meant Masborough that was closed and is no longer there except the remains of the platforms are still there.
@@Andrewjg_89 Central closed first, I don’t know when but long ago. Then the situation reversed, Masborough closed and Central re-opened with a new station built on the site in, I think, the ‘80s. The new Central is open now, but the old Central was closed for many years. Does anybody know why they decided to move passenger services back to Central.
Good to see that we are back to the traditional concern over your bladder movements during travel 👍 Keep going G, your girlfriend isn't the only one that loves you ❤
Fantastic vlog G nice to see you very close to my home town platform 0 at doncaster is used by northern trains to hull the doncaster to Sheffield route gets very busy because northern cut back the amount of services during the pandemic and they have stayed like that sorry to see you got the wet weather i hope it didn't ruin your day i look forward to seeing your next adventure G ❤❤
The national rail sign you spot is actually the old symbol from British rail it was known as the double arrow symbol and was British rails promise we’ll take you there and bring you back
Visiting Thornaby, Middlesbrough and all stations towards Saltburn and Whitby will be a similar situation to day 44 of exploring the North West, due to Eaglescliffe being in Country Durham
Excuse my pedantry, flower, but Adwick is pronounced Adick, the W is silent. While i'm at it, i'm sure you've heard of Slaithwaite station in W/Yorks. If you hav'nt already heard it "pronounced" by the locals, i hereby challenge you to "have a bash at it". I was fair perplexed when i first heard it, yonks a go. Hey G wow wow your in my home town Sheffield .... Do u like sheffield then or not .... Been on all of them stations where u going now ..... What u think of stations and trains up in Yorkshire then .....💯😊💯
I thought the OTHER Swinton you were visiting today was Tilda Swinton. Dammit!
You make me giggle! thanks.😀😀
Great video G , I spend a lot of time driving Leeds to Donny, keep,up,the good work hope to bump, into you soon around Leeds
New knickers on the head 😆😉
Wasn't Conisbrough station upgraded for the very short lived Earth Centre?
LNER clocks are brilliant, took a photograph of one at Peterborough🙄
Thank you for sharing G
Excellent video, G! It's definitely a good strategy to head in the opposite direction to the main flow of traffic so that you end up on quieter trains. Doncaster looked like a much nicer station than I imagined it would be!
Thanks! Yeah it's a good size 😁
Great video - enjoy watching your vids
Rotherham used to have two stations, Rotherham Masborough and Rotherham Central. Central closed long ago with all trains serving Masborough
Are you sure?!?
Rotherham Central is still around. I think you meant Masborough that was closed and is no longer there except the remains of the platforms are still there.
@@Andrewjg_89
Central closed first, I don’t know when but long ago. Then the situation reversed, Masborough closed and Central re-opened with a new station built on the site in, I think, the ‘80s. The new Central is open now, but the old Central was closed for many years.
Does anybody know why they decided to move passenger services back to Central.
@@srfurley Because Masborough was too far from the town centre and nobody was using it.
Fantastic video as always
Good to see that we are back to the traditional concern over your bladder movements during travel 👍
Keep going G, your girlfriend isn't the only one that loves you ❤
Fantastic vlog G nice to see you very close to my home town platform 0 at doncaster is used by northern trains to hull the doncaster to Sheffield route gets very busy because northern cut back the amount of services during the pandemic and they have stayed like that sorry to see you got the wet weather i hope it didn't ruin your day i look forward to seeing your next adventure G ❤❤
Ah thanks Stuart, ney what's a bit of rain 😂
Amazing video
Loved the video g and love you xx
You hardly come down south,we won’t bite 😂
Awesome video G Love Trains
I probably like both Swinton Stations (Swinton and Swindon sound similar)
I went on metro link tram and there was a spit person looked like you lol but defo not you as did not have a ruck sack lol good vid gloves trains x
A very good Tuesday evening young lady how are you today hun xx 😘
I mean, it's not difficult to run circles around Adric-- er, I mean Adwick!
The national rail sign you spot is actually the old symbol from British rail it was known as the double arrow symbol and was British rails promise we’ll take you there and bring you back
I remember hearing some joker call it "the arrow of indecision" as it couldn't decide whether it was coming or going!
another great day out
I live in Rotherham Swinton 😂
Conisborough stations claim to fame is that the actor Donald Pleasence's father was once station master and he lived there during the 1940's
And the now long gone Ecclesfield GCR station. Pleasance attended Ecclesfield school.
Did Adwick station get blown up saving the Earth from the Cybermen?
Think so 😁
Three questions…
1, are you from greater Manchester I.e Swinton in Salford? 2, what’s your favourite train? And 3, do you like steam trains? :)
You’re gonna come a cropper when you have to decide when Yorkshire ends and the North East / Cleveland/ Teesside/Durham starts ! 😂
As did most of local govt reorganisations, I blame the vikings
Visiting Thornaby, Middlesbrough and all stations towards Saltburn and Whitby will be a similar situation to day 44 of exploring the North West, due to Eaglescliffe being in Country Durham
Looks like I'm the first comment.
But......I won't say FIRST!
Just great vlog again G. 👏🙂
Bahaha FIRST!!
@@GLovesTrains This Bahaha reminds me of someone special bahaha. She writes it all the time.
Get some gloves, in Swindon or Swinton in Greater Manchester
Is the other Swinton the one near Manchester when you go to Bolton
Excuse my pedantry, flower, but Adwick is pronounced Adick, the W is silent. While i'm at it, i'm sure you've heard of Slaithwaite station in W/Yorks. If you hav'nt already heard it "pronounced" by the locals, i hereby challenge you to "have a bash at it". I was fair perplexed when i first heard it, yonks a go. ( If ya get it right, i'll eat my head, as some one said in a Dickens novel ! )
What do you mean other Swinton. This IS Swinton!
And Adwick has a silent W, so comically sounds Adick
