The collision avoidance system is what got me. Such tight turns and rhodies everywhere, the car didn't want to move. TC off worked OK, but once I figured out that some buttons turn on and off while other buttons YOU HAVE TO HOLD DOWN!!!... :O The car seemed to work better with just the CA system off. I tried X-Mode on and off and had more control with it off. I did learn many new things about the car. Like how it can climb just about anything :D
Taking one of these things off pavement requires a start up sequence not dissimilar from an aircraft take off. Engage x mode. Disengage collision avoidance. Disengage rear beeps. Disengage rear auto brake. Disable traction control. Disengage lane alert. Disengage blind spot. Select manual mode on the shifter. Etc

Actually, my wife's 2012 Subaru Outback's CVT did die at 109,000 km. (67,580) miles. No joking! Luckily, Subaru covered it. The mechanic told us it was a real mess! No more CVT vehicles, please!

Hi, what can you do to the newer subarus with the CVT to make them more off road capable besides lifts and tires? I know the older ones there were ways to make them better off road but the newer ones?
Transmission cooler, skid plates, upgraded shocks, off road bumpers/ bumper cuts for better approach angles, snorkels, TORQ locker, and more! People have gone crazy with these vehicles. Gonna be buying a Crosstrek soon because of all the videos and aftermarket support I’ve found!

Really enjoy your videos. That area of WV is beautiful country, isn't it? I don't consider the CVT a negative either. If anything I wish it were "more CVT" and didn't try to occasionally mimic shift points. Do you think the Outback could manage that trail without the 2" lift you have?
I’m considering a Subaru Outback (maybe the wilderness edition?) and I’m kinda put off by the CVT, but seeing them able to do this (though this trail is a slight bit more than I intend to take on) and your alright experience with a cvt mentioned in the comments makes me more ok with getting an outback with a cvt.

I’ve only gone on a few adventures with it so far, but one was on a now barely visible old track allowed to become a cow trail up the side of a mountain and it performed admirably! Can my Outback go rock crawling? No, but you want a Jeep for that. It DOES however do just fine on rutted, rocky, washed out forest access roads that go miles into nowhere, which IS what I bought it for. I’m quite happy with it.
Also you drain / flush your cvt? Got a video on it? I'm looking at doing that eletric pump method. Oddly enough the cheapest fluid seems to be amsoil at $10/quart. Subaru high torque fluid is $20/quart anywhere I can find it which is super rare.
Hey, did you just clickbaited me? Jokes aside, if a CVT can do such trails, then I wouldn't even consider it as a flaw to my vehicle. Also I ran a muddy trail yesterday to test the TC off button. Wow! It real allows wheel spin. And I am even more surprised that I can drive as fast as I want with TC off (at least the light on the dash is on). Superior AWD system.
It's a great system but it can still get overwhelmed/overheated. I've done it multiple times and showed it in my Top 5 Hate video. The TC off allows a lot more slip but there still seems to be something in the ECU holding it back.
@@bruceyyyyy I overheated mine as well backing up a hill. Waited 5 minutes and carried on. It feels like Traction control is turned off but stability control remains. Overall it aint a 4x4, its an untamed car lol
Kidding aside, what is a good mileage, or is there one, to switch out the CVT fluid on these things Bruceyyyy? I’ve got 80K on mine but don’t do nearly as much off roading as you. Cheers! All these rumors about them failing get my antsy as I’m approaching 100k.
I did 50k and everything looked good. Possibly too early but I would rather change it early since I'm not doing a full flush but just a drain and fill.

@@rogerward3185 I think manuals are great but no one buys them. Subaru hasn't made a manual Outback for 6 years and has never paired it with the H6 which is the engine to get. Typically people prefer automatics over manuals for off road proposes.

@@rogerward3185 If you're used to off roading a manual you'll be fine. Remember though Subaru doesn't offer a low range so they'll be a lot of slipping the clutch off road. The old bicycle lever for the throttle cable trick won't work either since it's a drive by wire system. Thanks! It's really just the wife and I do all this for fun so I tend to just do whatever I'm feeling like at the time. (:
just go offroading with full bumpers what could go wrong.. they so lacking lower gears there where you need to go very slow. those pre x mode VDC systems hating climbing so much they just cant handle it brucey what winch on that outback ? nice to see subarus going slow on tracks not just flying up like crazy most times.
All Things Cars meh it’s fine with the 4cylinder atleast in the newest iteration where it’s not trying to cut all the power to the wheels my 19 forester sport will climb all day long no issues
@@bruceyyyyy HAHAHA Uhh...NO!! Because they are lighter, cheaper and get better mileage. Don't get me wrong, I love Subarus. We have a 2002 Outback and a 2014 Outback. (CVT). The '14 hasn't given us any trouble yet, but it is not nearly as fun to drive. Feels like the engine is connected to the wheels by rubber bands. I have told people that if I could magically have an '02 that was brand new and fresh or a current model and I had to drive it (not talking resale value or anything), I'd take the '02 all day long. CVTs are known to not be as reliable as geared trannies. Simple fact.

I think it could do it but the margin of error would be much smaller. You would have to go slower as a result.

Subaru CVTs are more reliable than garbage EJ head gaskets, 4EATs, and rear sub frames on Gen 2 Outbacks.
I know because I've owned all of them.
