    Just FYI, I bought a Fostex D-5 DAT off eBay a couple of weeks ago. This is a pro-level mastering DAT. The seller said it was untested other than that it turned on. I got it for a well under $100 and all it needed was a single $1 voltage regulator chip. So you can find bargains, you just have to be careful and also be willing to take a risk.

    If it was worth a hell of a lot of cash, maybe looking at the schematic and trying to get a compatable smd chip to stick in the place of the blob might be worth it.

    This broken DAT machine can still be used as a bus ("glue") compressor to purely run audio in and out without recording. This was a technique used by some audio engineers in the 1990s when things were mostly analog; You could run your audio through a DAT machine at the end before printing to cassette or 2 track master.
    By current standards, the AD/DA will be grimy at best, so maybe this would be used by music producers who create EDM or urban styles of music. Still, there is value in the device so don't let it go to waste.

    29:49 It's difficult to measure voltages on live machine on capstan motor connector.
    As connector itself not attached to the circuit board it's flexing by moving and its tiny pins can break sometimes, you will see under microscope/magnifying glass, check every pin of 8 pin connector, maybe resolder pins to the board will also help discovering if some connector pins to the board had been already broken.

  • @nenaxen
    @nenaxen 4 місяці тому

    33:21 Capstan motor could be jammed if magnetic metallic objects could fall inside (like screws or metal pins, etc.) and stick attached to permanent magnets inside.
    When opening those objects could fell off and assembling would resolving mechanical jamming issue.

    On Ebay if an item is not as described the seller, not the buyer, is liable for return postage. I've had quite a few things for free and fixed them via people like you :). Thanks

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 роки тому

      That generally only applies to items shipped to and from the United States. I had something that was not working and it went back but I had to take it to the states to mail it. When there's international shipping involved they don't refund the shipping. Again this unit is in the buyer's Court I talked to him yesterday told him the motor is effed up at this point he just said hang on to it you can have it for parts. If he can negotiate a way to ship it back I'm sure he will contact me but at this point it's just going to sit on a shelf with all the other junk that people have abandoned and someday I may come up for the head for it or I may need to use it for parts to fix my own. Either way I wasted half a day trying to get this one going and got nothing for it. All I make is the advertising revenue off the UA-cam channel which is now 30% less that it used to be as UA-cam is deducting US taxes. Then I still have to pay Canadian tax on the remainder. So it kind of sucks now being a content producer as there isn't much left after the taxman takes his cut.

    • @khaz606
      @khaz606 3 роки тому

      @@12voltvids I see. I've had some stuff refunded where the return address is in China but the seller address was the UK, where I am. That might explain my refunds. Jeez 30% less from YT. I wonder what the reason they gave for that. With most people indoors the past year I would of thought they were doing pretty well.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 роки тому

      @@khaz606 well that's the US government. Irs has their hands in people's pockets even if they are not American. 30% royalty tax on all us earnings. That means us views. Does not apply to views in other countries but considering that the us viewers make up about 80% of the views world wide that is a significant portion. Then like everyone else this is declared income. eBay sellers also have to report their sales to Canada revenue. Sure if you're just selling your old toaster they might not care about the 10 bucks you made but people that run a business selling on eBay they get taxed just like everybody else. Get this even patreon donations, donators pay a tax in many countries when they donate on patreon. In Europe it's the vat and in Canada is the GST. Well the IRS they take their share from American contributors as well. Haven't figured out what they take because I make squat from patreon. That's why I don't even bother putting content up much on patreon now because I don't make enough from Patriot members to make it worth my while.

      That's very true, and the stuff i fix for eBay sellers arrives in good shape but still there is a high percentage of broken devices sold. It's one thing buying something untested. That is a dead giveaway that it is broken. Now according to the guy that owned this one the seller said it worked the last time he used it. So does that mean it worked when he placed the auction, or does that mean it worked when he put it into storage 20 years ago? The seller offered the buyer a refund of his $240 only after it was received returned. I would probably have returned it personally being out $275 for shipping the broken piece back and forth is better than being out $500 but that's just me.

    I have been a seller on eBay for many years and it is my experience that eBay treats its buyers extremely well in most cases, and in many cases to well. As a seller for years now you can't even leave negative feedback for a scamming buyer, all you can do is block them from future purchases. I mostly sell NOS vintage cookware and I have had people return items because they aren't as heavy as they remembered, or they think the factory machining marks are sanding marks that I made, etc. and eBay has made me pay the return shipping in many of these ridiculous cases! I can't imagine that if this was advertised as being in working condition that eBay would not refund 100% of his money plus shipping fees both ways if it arrived inoperable. That is just wrong to lose almost $500 because the seller likely lied about the function of the unit. It is always a possibility that it could have broken in shipping.

    The rarity and halted production of DAT tape machines makes them quite unreliable nowadays. They are good for collection or archival conversion only, not for regular use. Then this streaming service called UA-cam came along and made my dvds redundant. I got burned by a buyer once and that was it. No more eBay for me. I guess if I was looking for something specific I would look there but I don't buy anything these days. I have more stereo and AV equipment that I know what to do with so no buying other people's junk for me, besides I get so much of the stuff just given to me. I suggested that the guy that brought his dat player to me try filing a chargeback with his credit card and see whether he can get at least some of his money back without having to return it. I mean that's how I got burned, the lens I sold had nothing wrong with it, just the buyer bought the wrong lens he bought a half inch lens for a 2/3 inch camera and then complained it didn't work, had a dark image in the corners, duh it was a 1/2" lens for a 1/2 camera and he was using it on a 2/3". A year later they sided with him and I lost $2,500 and he never returned my lens. eBay and PayPal for that matter they're only solution was to give me names of companies that for a fee would try to recover my property.

    last year i got an silver dtc 77es with the wooden panels and all that was wrong were the capacitors in the head amplifiers. This has four heads, so two amps. Repairing is defenetly not a job for everyone. Untrained persons will destroy these device really easy. Thats propable, what the seller of this dtc75 did. Just too sad.

      I did the Cal's on my 75es a few years back. Still working or at least it was the last time I used it. Just had to put that in seemed appropriate considering that this one that's what the seller said. Last time I used my 75 was probably 2 years ago so with my luck if I turn it on now it probably is not working because anybody that knows anything about DAT or VCRs for that matter knows that if you don't use it at least once a month it is going to break down just from sitting. That's the biggest problem with all this Legacy gear. If you don't use it especially the stuff that's very mechanical such as tape decks and VCRs, they don't like sitting around. That's why I like all the new modern stuff no moving parts nothing to break it's happy just sitting there not powered up and when you need to use it to plug it in and it works.

    Sony shouldn't have bothered with dat machines, they ought to have made a digital recorder that uses beta tape instead would have saved the company money and the machine would have had at least 3 times the recording length, shitty lead free solder to blame yea? powering it on with dodgy edge connectors causing high resistance in turn damaging the motor controller?

      They already had the pcm encoder for beta and for that matter umatic tapes. DAT was devoloped with field recording in mind. As a professional format. There were also multi track dat recorders that used a hi8 tape that would record 8 tracks.

    Can't quite understand why you trash Ebay so much, I have had hundreds and hundreds of purchases off Ebay and have only had one bad one which came from America so I now don't buy from the USA, the postage is mad anyway often costing more than the item you're purchasing!

      I trash eBay and PayPal because i sold my old broadcast camera, shipped it and 3 months later the buyer asked to return it. I said no, all sales final and the buyer filed a chargeback. Dispute went on for 10 months and i lost 2700.00 as they gave him his money back and I never got my camera back. All eBay did was give me names of companies that said for 500 they would try to get my camera back. This should never have happened. I learned alot about the so called seller protection plan which amounts to nothing.
