As a Slovak legionnaire, my grandfather traveled with Ján Žižka's 3rd regiment along the entire Trans-Siberian highway to Vladivostok. His direct commander was lieutenant Ludvik Svoboda, later president of Czechoslovakia elected in 1968. He returned home via Japan, the Pacific Ocean, the Panama Canal and the USA. He enlisted in 1913 and returned home in 1920. In 1968, his wish came true and he personally met his commander and the president during a visit to his hometown. He died a year later. I was left with memories, 7 military decorations and old photos from the places where they anchored on the way home. I am 71 years old and I am glad that even the younger generation appreciates history.
WOW this is really a hell of a story to tell! Could easily become a movie as it has a lot to teach us these days, all respect to your family and grandfather. Regards from Brazil.
The nearest story that I know in my family is from my grandfather who almost went from Brazil to Italy on WW2, but when his division was travelling by train to take the ship, they unadvised stopped by a warehouse to sleep, just to discover later that the place had some sort of hepatitis contamination, they were sent back due to this and were not sent to battle.
You do realize that he entered legend right ? Like in this entire world not so many people can trace their roots to a legendary event like that onr, this is sick
I was pleasantly surprised by the positive reactions of the audience. One negative convinced me to give more information. My grandfather avoided talking about the details of his experiences during the war. I learned something later from my father. As a child, during the holidays, I witnessed the meeting of legion veterans from several cities of Czechoslovakia several times. They also met in his house. Their cohesion until the end of their lives fascinated me incredibly. They called each other "brothers" as if they were really one family. In the middle of the guest room in his house, a large folding locked table dominated, which hid all his memories and whose secret we found out only after his death. It contained memories of his participation in battles in the Austro-Hungarian army, his capture and, after an attempt to escape, the threat of execution. Fortunately, he was saved by recruitment into the Czechoslovak Legion. What followed was the anabasis of defending the Trans-Siberian highway and the struggle to return home. The last chapter was a trip around the world from Vladivostok by sea to home. After the end of the war, he became a criminal detective in the capital of Slovakia. As a detective, he regularly participated in the protection of the first president of the Czechoslovak Republic, Tomáš G. Masaryk, during his visits to Slovakia. In 1937, he participated as a member of the honor guard of veterans of the Czechoslovak Legion at the funeral of President T.G. Masaryk. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the fascists, the legionnaires were persecuted and the grandfather was put out of service. After the end of the war in 1945, his situation did not improve, and when the communists came to power in 1948, he ended up as a gamekeeper and vineyard guard with a minimum wage and pension. That was thanks to the republic for most of the legionnaires from the First World War. I found a photo from 1966 where he secretly photographed himself in a legionary uniform, which he kept for years. His eldest son was forced to enlist in World War II on the Italian front. Slovaks, as a satellite ally of Germany, send their army to fight alongside Germany on the eastern and southern fronts. He participated in the battles for the defense of Monte Cassino and was seriously wounded. It is an irony of fate that the grandfather fought on the side of the legionnaires and against Germany, and his son almost died defending fascist Italy. All this will probably be lost in time, but nevertheless this history should not be forgotten.
I found very interesting the story you shared here - I learned a lot from individuals with personal stories from the Great War and enjoy listening to them or reading their history. Thank you for sharing even more information.
"Last Train Home" - dirty anti - Russian and anti-Soviet lies ! The continuation of fueling the genetic Russophobia prevailing in the West ! The goal of the game is to zombify the teenage and youth audience - the main consumers of PC-games content ! Regards from Sochi, Russia !
For me as a Czech person who have legionnaires in the family (my great great grandfather was a Czechoslovak legionnaire) this game has a special place in my heart already.
Czechoslovak Legions. Masters of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Thanks to this feat, the first Czechoslovak President was also invited to White House in US and it is said that this "feat" is one of the reasons why we were recognized as a state, after fall of Austria-Hungary :)
I come from Poland. I've been writing my magister degree on estabilishing of diplomatic relations between US and CCCP and I decided to write a very wide background, just to trace all reasons behind particular political decisions. I remember that finding out about Czech Legion and their journey eastwards was a shock to me - also because I already had a good knowledge about Soviets, first world war and things that happened later. I bet that this is a thing that is known to very very few people outsice Czech Republic. So, it is cool that this game has happened, it should really boost some knowledge about long gone history of inter-war period in Europe.
Csesc polak brat :) yeah here in Czech almost nobody know about them. Its sad. It is because after war communist ocupy czechoslovakia so they totaly erase this part of history here in our country. That was humiliating for reds, then better hide it, right ?:D
Good luck with your magister's diploma! I should add: the Czechoslovak Legion is not forgotten in Russia (and possibly other post-Soviet countries). We learn about it at history lessons in school. It is usually portrayed in a very neutral way, even though Czechoslovaks played sometimes a crucial role in the balance of powers in Siberia and had their clashes with both Reds and Whites. I personally adore the will of these people to continue fighting for their Motherland, even after the front they were on shattered and the country hosting them has surrendered, and to travel for that across the entirety of Russia in difficult and hostile conditions.
@@ГеоргийМаксимовский Im already done with it. Actually... it's been more than a decade since my degree ;-). Funny thing - history in Russia is very politcal dependent (so is in other countries, but to a lesser extent), so there must have been a reason why Czech Legion remained in books.
When the Great War started, my great grandfather was a miller in a little town in South Bohemia. Little did he know that he would eventually end up in China, waiting for a boat home (their group wasn't returning through Vladivostok).
Interesting info - the core team worked on the UFO series ( Altar Games ), Flashpoint, Arma games and Vigor ( Bohemia Interactive ). And all that games were developed in midsize city Brno. The cradle of the famous games like Fish Fillets, Mafia, Vietcong, Hidden&Dangerous, Matador, etc. :) also less famous games like Crime Boss. 😃
I am American, but years ago I was lucky enough to take the Tran Siberian from Moscow to Vladivostok. It was insane and took weeks, but what an experience.
Great game! my Grandfather also served as a legionaire in Russia, he was the part of the 2nd rifle regiment since 1916. I am very glad that this game came out so that more people in the world can learn about this unbelievable part of history!
In the Czech dubbing, interesting thing is that most characters and narrator are dubbed in Czech, but there are some soldiers, including Major Gazdik, who speak Slovak. It's quite a beautiful detail and acknowledgement that we were once (and always are) brotherly nations with shared history. May the memory of Czechoslovakia lives on!
But they wasted the chance at authenticity by having everyone talk Czech or Slovak, even the Russians. It's incredibly disappointing that the legionares don't speak Russian when speaking with Russians.
Attack of the Czechoslovak legions on Lipjang 🇨🇿 In total, about 4,000 men were gathered at Lipjag within the individual units of the Bolsheviks. They were also very well armed compared to the Czechoslovaks and had enough ammunition and grenades. Their armament was supplemented by 180 machine guns and 13 cannons of various calibers, along with 10 mortars. 2 armored cars and an armored train were also ready for battle. The Bolsheviks built zones of trenches, fortified machine-gun nests and anti-personnel obstacles here for the effective defense of the railway station. Even with accompanying parts of other units, Lieutenant Čeček had only 1,600 men at his disposal against the enemy's fortified forces, supported by 32 machine guns, 7 cannons and the "Orlík" armored train In the Battle of Lipjag, 26 Czechoslovaks fell, including the popular commander of the 4th Infantry Regiment, Lieutenant Gayer. Another 86 were injured, including 4 officers. Two men were missing and presumed dead. Out of a total of 4,000 Bolsheviks, 1,500 fell in the battle, including their commander Kadomtsev and his deputy Oberleutnant Schmidt. Another 300 drowned trying to escape through the swamps. 1,800 Bolsheviks were captured by the Czechoslovaks.
Great to see another gem about things that happened in ww1 that generally gets ignored in the wider scope of history. Hope there's a nice playthrough of this. Would vote for Czech voiced lines just to add to the atmosphere of the game though I can imagine not everyone would like that compared to just plain English voiced lines.
Oh, the game has an "Immersive" language option where reds are voiced in Russian and legionaries in Czech and Slovak. I've seen it on a Czech stream today.
The game has immersive language which means that Czechoslovaks speak Czech and Slovak languages (english speaking people will probably don't recognize the difference though) and Russians speaking Russian language.
I meant I was hoping there will be a playthrough where the native spoken languages will be used like when a squaddie spots an enemy or machine gun nest :-) like there's too many games that are voiced in English that it'd be nice if some games can show off would show off other languages bit like in the civilisations series.
@@worri3db3ar Yeah, "Barks" are voiced too. Saw it on one stream. Not just story things but the soldiers in the missions screaming that there is a tank or that the action you ordered cannot be made and all that jazz. And Reds shout in Russian if they see you.

Just downloaded the demo and im playing it right now, I can honestly say in alpha demo its already one of the most immersive and pretty WW1 games I've ever played.
I always know about the flight of the Ján Žižka's 3rd regiment. It is something that isn't well known during the Russian Civil War that I'm glad this gets to be seen
This story is actually similar to the ten thousand. Ten thousand Greek mercenaries who fought their way back to Greece from persia after their employer cyrus the younger died before overthrowing his brother.
There's another Czech RTS with similar mechanics - Original War. Quite old (fiver on gog), but also quite revolutionary for its time and imo one of the best C&C style games out there. I wonder if there's any shared pedigree...
Germany: Got 50 kilometers from Moscow Napoleon: few days after Capturing Moscow had to retret Meanwhile: Czechoslovaks got from Kiev to Vladivostok lose less than 10 % of man power and not even mantiont in many history classes Where is someone who will make edit about them
I'm genuinely curious how they depict such a nuanced issue such as the Russian Civil War. Where both sides were committing atrocities to wipe each other out both ideologically and demographically. It seems like the Reds are taking the primary villainy position from the first gameplay which is an interesting take... Also this game is literally if Frostpunk and Metro Exodus had a baby in the early 20th century
Only just started watching the review but one quibble... the artillery section should be in front of the engine. Looks good though. Another good game would be the German experience in Africa in WW1. They came home after the war as heroes, having tied down 250,000 allied troops for the entirety of the war with only about 30,000 German and African soldiers.
Great mechanics on this game, it's the first time I hear about it and the story from this legion(loved the theme), hope to hear more about it. As it seems to need more polishing on details, it's great to know all of the features it has. Lots of new mechanics for a RTS, and as a big fan from Frostpunk, it resembles a lot since from visuals to the background music. Just and add-on, they could definitely put stories from Czech soldiers in loading screens or remember them on it!
I love how you mentioned every single game that even remotely might have a little piece in common with this game, but forgot the one that this game is totally based upon: the Commandos game :)
Read the book about the Czech Legion over 40 years ago while obtaining merchandise from the TV series World At War. Couldn,t cross over to their homeland just a few miles because of the Versailles Treaty so had to take the long way home.
I´m from Czech rep.and i love history, and this game is awesome,i played demo, try difficult commander,i think the best strategy(when did you saw strategy game(this is like commandos)when do you need ammo for your soldiers,to guns, food, medic equip etc etc(when do you have no food, morale go down or could die),for your train do need coal..really ,really realistic game.
Geeze.. the CG actors in the opening intro were INCREDIBLE. I didn't think they were CG at first!! The sadness and emotion in his eyes at 0:00:47 is incredible.
@@BrianPotterProductions Look at this video on YT: "Exkluzivně: Jak se natáčely filmové záběry pro oznamovací trailer Last Train Home" - it is location shooting of the scenes to to the game - many stunts but no CG. In the game, the filmed scenes are intercut with CG, so it's confusing, but most of those shots are filmed with live actors. ;)
I really enjoy this channel. You actually play the game for more than 15 minutes and really get into the features. Although I've probably spent entirely too much money and time on games, I've bought some really good games from watching your content
I bought the game because of the first 15 minutes of this video. Looked a lot like the old Commandos games, but also with an additional "management" layer. Worth. Every. Penny. I'm only in the second part of the story, but boy did they execute this well!
looks like a good game if they add more little things and give you a chance to expand the train i think having the option to take on other people stuck in the middle of the conflict that want a way out would be a good way to not only bolster your forces for your missions but also allow you to have more non combat troops assigned to the engine itself to free up others for missions
As a massive Military History nerd Its always great to see anything you know very little about and even more importantly the game is actually good (I played the Demo). Its such a unique way to do an RTS and I enjoyed the demo, I had a few issues like why don't enemy dead and destroyed vehicles stay visible on the battlefield and it could benefit from some blood to make it more realistic and immersive. You kill someone and a pool of blood is visible or your soldier gets wounded and is bleeding on the ground something like that.
looking forward to the game did a quick read through and they probably didnt need to make it fictional to make an interesting game the story of what they went through is really interesting
Looks great.. but I don't like the movement kinda. I think there needs to be some sort of formation selection, they are too bunched up all the time. Stance selection would be usefull too. Also the artillery should be called in by a smoke signal.. since there were no radios back then, it would make slightly more sense.
As someone who learned about the Czechoslovak Legion through the 'Revolutions' podcast series I can't wait to give this one ago, the mechanics look fantastic!
video: "The most promising great war strategy game ever seen" Me who randomly presses at 22:37: dude rushes an enemy with rifle behind cover and kills him.
Wasn't the Legion like 70 k strong and quite elite? Didn't they did occupied the whole of the Trans- Siberian - Railroad? Didn't they sited with the Whites? I hope this game has some historic facts and not only propaganda.
lol where is the propaganda? They held on most of the railroad, but all the trains had to operate independently. My great grand uncle was the captain of one of the trains. This video is like straight out of his diary
Yes, it was elite in compare to Russians, because everybody was educated (it was duty in Austria)Hungary to have basic knowledge since 18th century), also able to use multiple weapons and machines, legionaires was not just soldiers, but also engineers, teachers and doctors. And most imporantly, when Russian civil war started, all their military structures was crippled and splintered, while Czechoslovak legions was already fully organized military structure independent of Russian politics. Also, this 70k was not just soldiers, it contained a lot of civilians, and trans-siberian railways have thousands of kilometres - impossible to fully control, except stategicaly important locations.
And one more thing: it's apparently before the declaration of war between the Reds and the Czechoslovaks, how could they be occupying the whole rd at that point? Wait a year
Fun fact: The developers actually hired proffesional Czech theather and film actors for the cutscenes, notably Karel Dobrý who plays captain Langer. Just another reason to absolutely love this game, next to the fact that it is a really tasteful retelling of the Legion's story, which for me, as someone who is a descesndant of a legionnaire, that fought in Russia is really important.
Man so many new rts games with good graphics and fun Some of em are : 1.this one for sure 2.GORD 3.Lamplighters league (gotta try this one its a new mechanic to rts)
Why can't they ever make the locomotives according to reality? In games steam locos always travel without their respective tenders, meaning without coal and water reserves... And here we see in minute 1:35 the perfectly designed class 100 of Austrian KkStB. There was only ONE of this class ever built, and it ran on standard gauge ONLY. Standard gauge is 1435mm, in Russia there is 1524mm. Correction: There ist the tender in the game. Nice. But class 100 was fired by oil, not coal...
I've played the demo and there are many things wrong with it. I've also played every Men of War 2 beta until now. This one is AMAZINGLY good and for sure one of the best RTS since the last decade
Animations are freaking expensive, I wonder why they stopped using real life people for gaming like they used to once. You don´t need expensive actors.
Oh, nice, a game about Czechoslovak corp. Will it cover warcrimes czech and slovak soldiers commited against civilians and red army prisoners of war in Russia during their interaction in Russian Civil War they had absolutely no right to take part in?
well, they kinda did have every right to take part, since a certain somebody didn't let them go home? the certain somebody, who commited the same warcrimes as every other faction during the civil war?
If you didn't want them to figth for their lives maybe you should've let them to go to Vladivostok without any interruption so they can gtfo from your Mordor faster. But katsaps will be katsaps.
This is very reminiscent to the "Ground Control 1" by Massive Entertainment(Now part Ubisoft, currently making Far Cry games), and "SWAT 2". In Ground Control 1, you have the similar squad management and customization mechanics, and in SWAT 2 you have the similar cover system and line of sight system. You should check out both "Ground Control 1" and "SWAT 2".

It's like Warcraft 3, but set in real world locations. Seems like an interesting game.

Game: "Recommended squad size: 8"
Raptor: "5 will do. Let's goooooo!"
Me: erm.. okie doke :s
Czechoslovak legions were fighting mostly reds so it makes sense.
They rarely fought the White Army and even at times temporarily allied with them in battle.
Notably, the revolt of Czechoslovak Legion was the first hostility of a large scale in the Russian Civil war, basically starting the bloody spiral.
Thanks for sharing this. Never heared about them before. It's great some history resurfaces in "accessible" forms!
Yes, the Germans kicked the ass of the British in Africa.
Just and add-on, they could definitely put stories from Czech soldiers in loading screens or remember them on it!
there should be entire encyclopedia about it, how it was in reality vs game - info is mostly from diaries of legionaries.
Sir reason why Cs Legionares cant return home true west is not Treaty of Versailles but Russians back of from war.
I´m from Czech rep.and i love history, and this game is awesome,i played demo, try difficult commander,i think the best strategy(when did you saw strategy game(this is like commandos)when do you need ammo for your soldiers,to guns, food, medic equip etc etc(when do you have no food, morale go down or could die),for your train do need coal..really ,really realistic game.
this might be the spiritual successor to the Sudden Strike series - if only it was developed further. the vision system reminds me of that game
Geeze.. the CG actors in the opening intro were INCREDIBLE. I didn't think they were CG at first!! The sadness and emotion in his eyes at 0:00:47 is incredible.
They're not CG, the actor playing Cpt. Langer is mr. Karel Dobrý.
@@Giofear Maybe in a few shots, but multiple shots are CG with mocap. Still, it's impressive!
@@BrianPotterProductions No mocap was used for recording of these videos. Only "CG" shots are the moving tin figures on the table.
Appreciate you watching!
as a Czech, I approve.
I have been waiting for some kind of Transarctica for 25 years, that could it be.
Looting, gold stealing, civilian executions will be demonstrated in this game ?
I bought the game because of the first 15 minutes of this video.
Looked a lot like the old Commandos games, but also with an additional "management" layer.
Worth. Every. Penny.
I'm only in the second part of the story, but boy did they execute this well!
I downloaded the demo and it has been very good so far. I've played about 2 hours worth and nowhere near completing it.
Don't really understand the decision to get british VAs for this, using eastern european accents would have been way more atmospheric.
This looks really nice, I'd be addicted to playing this.
looks like a good game if they add more little things and give you a chance to expand the train i think having the option to take on other people stuck in the middle of the conflict that want a way out would be a good way to not only bolster your forces for your missions but also allow you to have more non combat troops assigned to the engine itself to free up others for missions
Well this game will be banned in Russia based on the first 8 and some change minutes.
this is better IMO than company of heroes... in terms of firing guns and actually hitting targets.
When I get this game I will not leave a single red army soldier alive.
Definite worth a check out game.
Demo was fun, only played 30mins. Probably won't play more until it is fully released to enjoy the full experience.
looking forward to the game did a quick read through and they probably didnt need to make it fictional to make an interesting game the story of what they went through is really interesting
54:50 for Star wars fands He mean difernt republic 😀
Playing game with authentic voiceover > English voiceover
This game looks great. I’m going to get this when it becomes available.
Winter is Coming!
Looks great.. but I don't like the movement kinda. I think there needs to be some sort of formation selection, they are too bunched up all the time. Stance selection would be usefull too. Also the artillery should be called in by a smoke signal.. since there were no radios back then, it would make slightly more sense.
As someone who learned about the Czechoslovak Legion through the 'Revolutions' podcast series I can't wait to give this one ago, the mechanics look fantastic!
video: "The most promising great war strategy game ever seen"
Me who randomly presses at 22:37: dude rushes an enemy with rifle behind cover and kills him.
Looks good, added to my wishlist
Can not wait for this game bcs my Great Great grand father was there in Russia during that time in Czechoslovak legions.
The game looks amazing. It will be cool to play this part of history.
12:07 would be fun to have this game as a zombie survival
This looks epic and I am definatly gonna enjoy this one for sure! Love the history and the vehicles etc like a Metro exodus hybrid RTS well said!
@@2384 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czechoslovak_Legion just a little digging...
Wait a year
The campaign and dialogue remind me of warcraft III campaigns back in the day, but without this awesome graphics
thank you game looks like that what i want
Reminds me of a flash game called Rail of War
This really looks like a great game. I just bought it for Steam after seeing this video.
ive had this game wishlisted for a while
Fun fact: The developers actually hired proffesional Czech theather and film actors for the cutscenes, notably Karel Dobrý who plays captain Langer. Just another reason to absolutely love this game, next to the fact that it is a really tasteful retelling of the Legion's story, which for me, as someone who is a descesndant of a legionnaire, that fought in Russia is really important.
I want to play this. I will get it when it releases.
Who picked that name? Captain Langer 😂😂😂
battlefield 1s seven nation army playing in the background!!!
Man so many new rts games with good graphics and fun
Some of em are :
1.this one for sure
2.GORD
3.Lamplighters league (gotta try this one its a new mechanic to rts)
Like it. Looks like Jagged Alliance
Looks interesting
Why can't they ever make the locomotives according to reality?
In games steam locos always travel without their respective tenders, meaning without coal and water reserves...
And here we see in minute 1:35 the perfectly designed class 100 of Austrian KkStB. There was only ONE of this class ever built, and it ran on standard gauge ONLY. Standard gauge is 1435mm, in Russia there is 1524mm.
Correction: There ist the tender in the game. Nice. But class 100 was fired by oil, not coal...
Is it you, Sheldon?
It looks promising.
I've played the demo and there are many things wrong with it.
I've also played every Men of War 2 beta until now. This one is AMAZINGLY good and for sure one of the best RTS since the last decade
Wish there was co-op in this
The Russian Civil War and the Czechoslovak Legion are very overlooked parts of history, so it's interesting to see a game about it.
no we just watched the commissar shot him 29:37
Animations are freaking expensive, I wonder why they stopped using real life people for gaming like they used to once. You don´t need expensive actors.
They used actors
Damn they done made an RPG/RTS game
It looks like a better version of "Commandos" game but easier..
