I wish Ridley Scott had displayed a modicum of curiosity about Caracalla and Geta as emperors. Almost zero resemblance to the emperors' personalities (as narrated in the sources) and their relationship to one another. And no Severan empresses. Why create a movie using historical personalities that don't actually interest you as personalities? The thing is, if Ridley Scott had embraced the actual period that he is ostensibly depicting, then the movie would have been far more interesting. Caracalla as narrated by Cassius Dio, the Historia Augusta and Herodian is a much more fascinating character than the Caligula rip-off in the movie. He scowls in all his portraits, he challenges Germanic kings to single combat, he creates his own revived version of the Spartiates, and he personally invades the Parthian Empire in imitation of Alexander the Great. The Caligula-esque depiction just feeds into the usual representation of 'bad emperors' as soft weaklings. And I feel kind of bad that Ridley Scott's unflattering depiction of Geta, a victim, will now dominate the public perception of him, insofar as the public was aware of him. Boo

Simon Whistler did a great video on Caligula, talking about how he was a good leader in the beginning, before he seemingly got brain damage from a bad fever.
That was a really well written and concise summary of the basics of the Emperor Caligula. I usually have to dig pretty deep to find even slightly unbiased sources of information about his reign. It's mostly about sorting propaganda when you're looking at that emperor. The victor writes the history, after all.

It's a shame nobody mentioned the fact that the Romans did not use hard stirrups in this period (they weren't used until the 4th or 5th century AD), and Roman generals did not ride into battle on horseback.

Decided to watch the original Gladiator the next day and noticed that 2 was the exact same movie just with the Maximus just being Pedro Pascals character and the main character and Commodus being the two new emperors and Denzel's character other than that it was the exact same movie just with new fight scenes.
It's not just the same, it's unbelievably worse
@3:20 Thank you!!!! I thought I was the only one that thought that was messed up.
He may have set fire to his legacy, but he can go home and cry into a big pile of cash
Cash don’t give him any more years.
This is like when Drs/nurses watch Medical Shows 😂
Don't wanna end up like the french.
Ridley Scott didn't just fall off he straight up plummeted to the point he could've bore a hole to the center of the Earth
I was just happy to see a film with male leads who weren't belittled by females or a child's superhero film that is for adults. What's confusing for me is that the same people who love these superhero, utter nonsense are saying, 'This' is a terrible film. ...? Did anyone expect this to be even 'almost' as good as the original? Maybe the same people who expected a fair boxing match between Tyson and that other guy.... This sequel is a lot better than 90% of the utter nonsense that's released these days..
"Casablanca, now in colour, and with a happy ending!" That's where modern cinema is at right now.
1:45 the sieging general looks exactly like the lead guitarist from Gnome and I find it very confusing
You and channeling Bill Hader vibes so strong I'm waiting for a Pacino impression...🤔
Mine is Ancient Greece. Come at me, minioans.
That review was so unhinged it made a monkey consul.
Best movie review I have seen in ages
Well if ridley scott and pedro "I'm gonna cry because I'm an absolute pansy" pascal are teaming up then you know it's gonna be a banger
If Jordies wrote a swords&sandals Roman epic screenplay I would watch that sh*t.
Weirdly I just watched a video about how completely fucked the Roman’s got by archimedes
Should’ve just gone to the pub and gotten pissed
Thanks for confirming Jordie, what I already suspected. My wife's been keen to see it and I've been stalling 😂. Btw it's great to see you are a Historian like myself. My son went to Turkey recently and I asked him if he looked at any of the remains from the Byzantium period. He looked at me like I was from another Planet. Fckin sad that people don't seem interested in it. You can learn a lot from History.
I like the use of “entry of the gladiators”
The first movie worked because it was an archetypal story a parallel to cain and able.
A timeless theme about sacrifice and and manipulating the world to your favour.
It runs deep... How do you forget to tell a story like that
I am surprised that he even talked this much about the movie
thought he would get off the rails quickly
I'm still laughing at the trebuchet and the fact that Numidia was conquered about 250 years before the events of the film
Your planned video was too insensitive due to current events? You can't just say that and deprive us of a spicy video!
Oh my god, your stance on Caligula is just like mine! Love you for this!
oooooo, this may be worse than watching Wing Commander in a closet sized theatre
I still can't believe they didn't have Mark Hammill in the movie version. He's Luke fucking Skywalker!
My favorite part was when he shouted, "IT'S GLADIATIN' TIME!", and then gladiated all over the place.
If you learn history, every historical *FANTASY* film will be ruined for you forever.
I love the fact this whole video was basically already done on the up late. The plebs will never know. 😂
imagine ridley scott made 4 part series of at least 3 hour long films that accurately depicted the rise an fall of civilizations and the all the economic players who benefitted from the pump and dump scenarios,, such wasted potential, but he probably would have a hard time convincing investors to get behind anything that cut too close to the bone lol
nah but all autism aside the one thing that jordies seem to nail was that the movie was just the first one but worse. i see that criticism a lot with other movie review channels
It's worse than that, it's constantly begging you to remember the first one. You can barely go 10 minutes without "Hey, remember Russel Crowe"
@@eugenideddis so the movie is basically like the south park member berries meme right? we are truly in the slop era
Instead of Gladiator 2, I went and watched Agora again. Still one of my favourite historical dramas that is surprisingly accurate. Love it.
The film industry as a whole doesn't hold the same well oiled machine it once was in the golden age.
more of these vids, jordz. Hilarious.
Hate to break it to you, but there is a zigzag layout in Yoho national Park. Specifically the Spiral Tunnels.
