"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!
The Chick Inn is built better and looks better than my apartment. I've never seen a better coop anywhere. Good Job!
Thanks!
@@ModernSelfReliance add an automatic chicken door that closes for the night so your chicks don't freeze during the winter!
Kevin you are brilliant. I simply love how you’re always up cycling things. And your property doesn’t ever look to be a mess as you always have a place for everything. Your finishes on your projects are so creative and always finish these builds with style and character. WOW! Just great! Your family and friends are lucky to have you. Thanks for another entertaining morning
Excellent build, once again! The chickens and your wife will be very happy.
Brilliant multi use chicken coop. Thanks for the chicken humor along with Saturday morning motivation, your energy is contagious!!!
Kev man, you’re an amazing carpenter. My dad would have loved to watch this channel.
The “brought to you by OCD” had me dying 😂😂😂
Brilliant dude! This one is definitely gonna be warm in the winter. Impressive build! Cool coasters too!
Like everyone else you not only put a lot of thought into your projects but you add quality. You are showing everyone how much you can recycle products rather than just buying brand new everything. Also I am glad you decided to video and share this project with us 👍🏻
I so enjoy watching your videos. Not only are you very creative but the dry sense of humor is awesome and i learn something also
OMG!! That chicken coop is incredible!! Great job, Kevin!
Only Kevin can make a stinky chicken coop into a work of art 😆🙌🏼
Really Kevin is making a work of art into a stinky chicken coop. Kind of a shame.
Perfect stands in the way of done ✔️
Hey Kevin , Chickens can not see in the dark ....so if your vent tube was transparent ....I think she would have went in ......I had same problem with mine ....wouldn't go in coop at night , until I shined a flashlight inside ....I finally got a motion solar light ....so they are all good now. Great video as always, keep up the great work.
Nice job!
Your chickens are some very fortunate chickens!
Very nice build. Chickens should be happy.
“Best chicken coop award” goes to…….KEVIN! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Nice job!! I bet the wife is happy.
The white panels make it bright! Looks good.
It sure does.. those garage door panels are the gift that keeps on giving.
You're one of the coolest dudes on youtube! Your awesome man!
having a good place for chickens to go lay eggs is paramount. Nice build
5 star chicken resort, top job... love it... Kevin you inspire... great vlog
Those are some lucky hens. But they deserve to be pampered because they give you eggs.
I love the coop, I could live in there. Those are some lucky chickens. You should try and find a scrap piece of linoleum for the chicken side, easy cleanup.
Hello from Minnesota USA!! Great episode!
Love the chicken coop. God bless!
You just blew me away.
Kevin I lmao when you had the chicken stabilizing its head. then trying to get the chicken into the tube. thanks I needed that 😂😂👍
Kevin that's a great looking chicken coop.
Nice chicken house. Pine shavings work well for bedding the turpentine in the chips helps keep mites and lice off your birds. Lice kinda likes straw. Wood as in a wood box in corner of yard for them to roll n natural parasite control. Thanks for sharing
I love chickens!!! I have many!! I laughed at your interaction with them, of course she was never going to go through that tubing!! This is a great build, love the idea of charging your permeant battery station to be able to charge you portables!
So is he charging portables off of the connected lead acid or Battleborn fixed batteries, with a regular outlet plug?
So from my understanding he is going to charge the big battery pack that rolls into the She Shed, then use that to yes, plug in his more portable battery packs to be able to use them in shaded areas on the property
Ha, in the small window in my browser, the title was cut off at "Massive Off Grid Solar Powered Chicken"... I'd love to see one of those!
Nice work Kevin! The Chick-Inn looks awesome and should provide a nice cozy place for all your chickens to live :) I like how you strive to spend as little money on your projects as possible. I am very much the same way with how you plan and stash materials til you’re ready to build. One suggestion would be to use wood chips rather than straw for the bedding. It absorbs much better. Cheers from north Bay Ontario 😊
Maybe a bag o' shavings on top...
That was TIGHT!
Thanks Kevin! Awesome video 🎉
As always, your creativity astounds me. Another winner, Kevin!
Your mill is a life $aver! And the coop is so really classy! Fantastic!!! I’d live in it.
Awesome!
Great project. Enjoyed this video. Best in a while.
Great video !
Great info and explanation !
Thank you for sharing 👏😀❤️
They were chicking it out. Not checking.
Great job Kevin makes me wish I was a chicken 😊☮️
Always very entertaining
Nicely done!
What can I say! After seeing this cute little barn, I want to become a hen or chicken so I too get the chance to live in a palace before I die. Nice build! Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪 😊
We used vinyl roll flooring for the bottom of the coop. It makes I easier to clean and not rot the plywood.
Cool😊
Watching Kevin build makes me think of (what if old PBS DIY shows like This Old House had an outtake or blooper real) and I love it. Like Bob Ross always said "There are no mistakes just happy accidents". Funny thing is I grew up with old school PBS and I never made the connection about my parents calling my siblings and me "happy accidents" until I became a father!
beautiful build / to nice for any chickens I know
My coup is a bunch of milk crates on star pickets and a tarp or two. You're one wins hands down. Just needs a TV and hottub to complete the epic setup. Add shell grit to there diet for great shell quality.
Thats a great idea Kevin, that's exactly why the government will never do it.
Luv ya and great build. You're channel is the best.
Thank you for the tips
For deep bedding it is better to use Wood Chips. The whole thing can then be used as Compost later. Straw makes a solid Plate.
Amazing work as usual. Love all the up-cycling and totally agree with you on the silliness of insulation being so expensive.
Great build!
killer build i love it
Great Chick Inn!!! My son also built a Taj Mahal chicken coop for his wife! Loved the video! 🤗
Yeah, yeah, you have everything…….❤❤❤❤
the chicik inn that's definitely a 5 star chicken hotel
I Love this saw mill it's my favorite machine of yours Kevin 👍my favorite
Nice pieces of ash ,❤
I agree this looks like an apartment instead of a chicken coop.
Love watching U building things, I'm amazed at all the work U and Don get done. Haven't seem him in this build?.
This was on my hunny do list. Don helped with the shakes.
“Hot air’S - there’s atleast 2 of them” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Gordon here, I also used a Norwoods 2000 LM mill to make lumber for chicken coop. You got the newer Norwoods mill . Mine is a antique to look at yours lol. But it is bought and paid in full before I got to me. And now I can make special wood boards that you can not but at Home Depot. I also shop @ Princess Auto but here Alberta Canada. A mans store that is what my wife calls it lol. You got keep a sharp watch out to keep them homeless one at bay or else they will move in . them lazy will move in and take over free power free heat lol
Door to the chicken run ,is good idea
w/ the cube. ball and original cabin plus alt the amenities ( pond, outdoor kitchen, shower, sauna, hot tub etc. ) you could AirBnB the whole compound for weekends or weeks at a time. I see Canadian dollars rolling in hand over fist !!
Good stuff man...👍👍
You can just staple both bottom corners of the plastic while keeping it snug, then pull the middle top tight from both bottom corners, and work your way out from there. Then you don’t have to crawl under the plastic. Anyway fun video!
The forestry skills you have are generational. The way you harvest, preserve and build *Above Ground and
A Couple feet down.
Kevin your skills would have been paid for..betcha.
The concept you have to return the field back to original planting was my favorite video.
Smokey the Bear from near there.
Oh, the chicken head stabilizer is a thing. People are putting mini cameras on chicken heads. Incredibly hilarious stuff. You should check it out.
Somehow I got bumped off your subscription, I love your channel, 👍🏽👍🏼👍🏽👍🏼
I love the little rant about insulation, spot on with your assessment Kevin!
another great build!
Glad you like it!
what i want to know is how quickly your mill setup paid for itself. you are able to make so much raw cut with that thing, loads and loads of lumber just from the property
7:15 The Man with the Silver Gun.
rock wool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is super fancy for chickens. I made mine out of a car port, vapour barrier, chicken wire, hardware cloth, and some straw bales.
suggestion tether the lag bolt lock so it won't drop or get lost
Check with your local box store or flooring center and see if they have any linoleum remnants, for cheap or even free ninety free, that you can get to put on the coop floor.
Yes the insulation is insane price wise.
Brilliant build!
Dude, I'd be kicking the chickens out and making it my cabin...lol 😂 They can fend for themselves out in the run...😅 Excellent job, turned out really nice! Love what you're doing 😊
Great video building the chicken coop. Are you planning to do a video frying or BBQ chickens?
We don't use hay for hen bedding they tend to eat it and gets stuck in their crop - bad times. Currently using a hemp bedding, good absorbency they don't eat it!
Lovely old job
Great job Kevin like always ,have good life 👍😊
Another amazing video man! You are doing such a good job! Also like someone mentioned it looks better than many apartments 😂 Is there a chance of renting a room there hah?
Pretty classy chicken coop, Kevin!
Are you going to put some protection around the outside coop to prevent predators from digging under it? Maybe put in one of those solar operated automatic doors?
6:30 The chickens are about to tell you where THEY want everything.
In the chickens area you should put down a sheet of linoleum for easy clean up
That tarp is about as thick as lino
Amazing job!
Finally someone who understands how physics works.. i hate watching people put up vapor barrier/house wrap.. and end up with wrinkles everywhere
You might look into (hen) laying mats
Great job Kevin, love the whole design. We have kept chickens for the last 12 years. One tip, chickens lay eggs according to how much sunlight they get. Summer = Tons of Eggs, Winter = Sad face. You can stimulate more egg production in winter by adding a lightbulb on a timer. More light, more eggs. Since you have power onsite, it should be an easy fix. Love the channel and all your positive content. Full stop
each visitor gets their own laser etched MSR coaster LOL
LOLz I think I know where you were going on that rant.
Ugh I wanted to watch the full build! It’s beautiful, the structure is amazing! Pls use vinyl sheet flooring, that should last forever and make cleaning far easier
Marvelous build. I’d recommend tying some string to the bolt lock and to the mesh so it dosent get lost
