15 years old heard The Jam for the first time. 60 years old still my favourite ever band and Rick was a massive and integral part of the success. I don’t think that Rick ever gets the recognition he deserves; they would never have had THAT sound without Ricks style.
Great great drummer. Again, a very musical drummer. Also, people forget how powerful his drumming was. Hard to imagine what life would have been like for people of my generation without people like this and his music.

Drummers are the goalies of a band. Mad. Brave. If they don't concentrate, doesn't matter what the others do, it'll all fall apart! This fella and Woody Woodmansey, along with the Joy Division guy, are my faves.
I just adored his style in The Jam... One of my *all time* favourites.
Nice interview. Love Rick and his drumming style. Think he was underrated at the time and still can't work out how the hell he played Funeral Pyre.

I always loved how Rick used big drums. Not a big number of drums, but large diameter toms. "Town called malice" is still one of my favorite warm up songs to this day. He had a steady powerful beat that really made The Jam's sound powerful.
I'm 44 and been listening to the Jam for 35 years, and it's great to hear Rick talking. He never did many interviews. Seems a nice bloke.

Very tight almost machine like brilliant. Great bloke. Here in the states living in the middle of nowhere, i got my hands on In the city and this is the modern world, and i never looked back. Thanks Rick!

What a nice bloke. Met him around ' 82, and he's still the same. shame The Jam ended 2-3 albums before they should have, but what great stuff, and it would be a shame if people forget Rick and Bruce's part in the band!

There were 3 people in The Jam.. and two of them weren’t Paul Weller… great comment… Rick & Bruce made The Jam sound.

Paul Weller hasn’t spoken to Butler in thirty years, that does seem a bit weird. I guess Weller wasn’t the same guy that joined the band when it started.
just watching rick play when he was in the jam was amazing. when he played it was effortless. I'd put him up against ANY drummer.

That must have been a strange experience, The Jam supporting Thin Lizzy late 76....2,000 strong partisan rock crowd and three suited mods salmon jumping all over the stage!

Crazy booking! Weller mentioned before that that particular crowd of Oyster fans were definitely not into the Woking brand of Rhythm and punk. Booing and tossing things at the stage.
5:38...muscle memory kicks in...ha, been there..like, where am I in the song? Do I drop to a D or a B flat???? Is this the 2nd verse into the bridge, or the 3rd verse in to the chorus??? Worse when you have to sing and play too! Rick is a top, top geez!
Sorry, as much as I love the JAM and love Rick, as I watch this I see them drinking and think mmmm English Beer .
