We may think of our pets like another member of the family - but they exist in a secret world that we would hardly recognise. In this series new filming techniques reveal our pets' wild behaviour and natural abilities. Using the latest filming techniques, from spycams to thermal imaging and moving x-rays, this series reveals why just a small select group of animals have the perfect characteristics to become human companions. The first episode shows how our pets use play to get in touch with their wild side, while the second episode shows how our pets maintain links with their wild nature.

Ok, let me just educate you guys:
*this is a Roborovski hamster not a Russian dwarf
*They can NOT be housed together as they will fight
*This wheel is too small and needs to be upgraded
*They need at least two wheels if you have 2 hamsters
*That food just looks horrible, no variety, low quality etc
*if a hamster flips on there wheel it’s a sign it needs to be upgraded
*the cage looks to small, especially for the amount of hamsters are in it
*When they begin fighting they need to be separated immediately before one kills the other
*I can’t get over how bad that food is omg
*You need to scatter feed if you have multiple hamsters especially (u should scatter feed anyways) since one hamster will become territorial over the bowl, meaning the others won’t get food and fights will break out
*With him flipping like that he can injure himself; and desperately needs an upgrade
*this is literally abuse
*too much food

@@sargentapplepie7099 bro, if a hamster is not covering much distance on his running wheel every night it might mean that they're sad and lethargic. Often because people over interact with them or because their enclosure is small.
Empereur Justinien I can assure you it is because he is old and doesn’t have as much energy as when he was younger (also it is just an exaggerated joke he can actually run more than 3 ft but the exaggeration made it funny)
@@empereurjustinien2082 yes and no. Some are just lazy. A hamsters activity level ranges from species, age, gender to character. Also, consider this: hamsters run around 10kms per night, because they are searching for food! And guess what happens in captivity? Right. They get tons of food without having to earn it. Their tummies are full already. Why go waste energy then?
Of course enclosure plays a huge role in this. But my hybrid male is just interested in other things. He will run for a few minutes and then eventually get bored (his enclosure is 100x50cm and has a 25cm wheel. Definitely enough.) He also has a lot of hideouts in there, even a 30cm big one with three smaller rooms in it. He used to run a lot as a baby but as he got older he just developed a bigger interest in digging tunnels in his bedding and destroying things. Cardboard and tissue paper, woodsticks, dried snacks... You give it to him, he will happily be occupied for a long while. Props his ears up happily. Then again I kept dwarfs in the same conditions and some prefered the wheel. It's not always that black and white.

When you realize the hamster is flipping around the wheel because it's fun, not because he made a mistake.
They are most certainly NOT doing it for fun, hamsters, especially Robos, have problems keeping control when they try to stop on the wheel or aren't fast enough to keep running continuously.

There are 5 species of dwarf hamster
Roboroski
Russian
Winter white
Campbells
And dungerian
All of which are distinct from each other and come from different parts of the world,, I understand its confusing, books often have misinformation or a general misunderstanding on the species they talk about because information is out dated by 5 or so years they're both dwarf hamsters but different species of dwarf hamster :)

Exactly
That comment was cool. Look at me, learning new stuff every day.
Actually, since they are robos, i think that wheel is actually a decent size for them as you can see it doesn't really bend their back, but i agree with everything else
@@boyblue3485 the size isn't bad by what I can see but even if it's decent if they're going to be in a pair they will need two of everything including wheels. "Competition" as they call it here for hamsters can often mean territorial fighting to the death. Ain't cute. Hopefully it was just done for demonstration purposes though
All hamsters prefer to live alone. They don't need company or get lonely. They can tolerate each other, but it's not worth the risk.
This video is spreading a lot of dangerous misinformation and I need to clear up a few things. Firstly, these are Roborovski hamsters not to be confused with 'Russian Dwarf' hamsters, an entirely different species of hamster that can never be mixed together. Secondly, I would never personally recommend housing the same species of hamsters together anyway, even more 'sociable' species like roborovski's. When they reach a certain age they can become very territorial and this leads to fighting, often to the death. The hamsters in this video are fighting - a clear sign of stress, aggression, and territorial behaviour that can have deadly consequences. I hope I am mistaken and it's just the angle but I thought I saw a Russian Dwarf hamster in the background in the same enclosure at one point - as I explained, they are a different species of hamster that should NEVER be mixed with a Roborovski.
Hamsters are much better off on their own. If housing hamsters together they should be of the same sex and housed in a suitable enclosure and must have double of everything, i.e. 2 wheels, 2 water bottles, etc, and you should not put any levels or platforms in the cage as this encourages territorial behaviours in the hamsters. You should always have a spare cage ready to separate the hamsters as soon as fighting starts.
This enclosure is an unacceptable and inhumane cage to house hamsters in as the bare minimum sized enclosure they should be housed in is 450 square inches of continuous floor space. The RSCPA recommends over 550 square inches of continuous floor space. You can buy bin cages that meet these requirements for less than £20. A suitably sized enclosure should also contain plenty of enrichment and stimulation for the hamsters which this cage does not. Stimulation such as sand baths, wooden chews, toys, boredom breakers, hideaways, foraging, areas to explore, etc, are vital for keeping hamsters stimulated and happy.
A good section of the cage (or all of the cage if you can) should contain at least 15cm or 6 inches of safe substrate where the hamster can burrow - burrowing is a natural and healthy way the hamster can express themselves. In the video at the beginning, you show the hamsters housed in pine wood shavings which is not a safe substrate - pine wood shavings can splinter which causes injuries in the hamster - especially if ingested. When the urine mixes with the wood it also releases toxic fumes which can lead to serious respiratory infections if used long term. Even if using a safe substrate, not providing hamsters with a proper burrowing space doesn't allow them to display natural hamster behaviours.
Please do your research and stop contributing to the continued spread of misinformation on hamsters.
No one said that they are Russian dwarves. Roborovski's hamsters (robos) are Russian too, they live in Russia in wildlife and their discoverer was Russian too. You have to take your pills and chill the fисk out.
@@lapsijahti I didn't say anyone called them 'Russian dwarves' I said 'not to be confused with Russian dwarves'. That's different. Because they called them 'Russian hamsters' a lot of people will automatically think they are Russian dwarves which they are not and therefore this video is misleading. And I won't 'chill out'. These animals are one of the most neglected animals thanks to many people spreading misleading information on them - if I can help one person understand more about how to look after these beautiful animals properly then it's a job well done, and no amount of people telling me to chill out will stop me 🙃
@@purplehorse2661 thank you 😊👍🏻
@@lapsijahti It doesn't really matter if they are both from Russia, only one species is actually called a Russian hamster and the ones in the video aren't it. So if someone saw this video and then went to a pet store asking for a Russian hamster, they would get something very different.
And why are you so offended by a person correcting misinformation? I worked in a pet store and you would not believe what people do to these creatures out of sheer stupidity. It's really depressing. Take your own advice and chill out.

BBC: hamsters aren't the most social animals.
Why are they in the same cage then???!!!
Well since they are robos, some people have more than one together which is an iffy subject since theirs 50/50 chance they will or won’t get along but it seemed that their were more than two so that wasn’t the best choice
Finally the comment I am looking for. 🐹

Mike Bell yeah but they still get stressed by being in a small cage and they get even more stressed when there are 2 of em
Yes, the cage is extremely smalllllll and it doesn't look like it's just for filming.. plus I think I can see even more hammys in the background not just the two of them... But actually Robos can be kept together but only the same sex partners and preferably only females because males can still fight and it end up badly... Also, if you do keep two they definately neet two wheels! Giving them only one wheel and such a small enclosure could (very likely) lead to injuries and even death.. they are fragile little creatures and mostly missunderstood... :( This is a sad video sorry for the rant
Isnt there more than two shown early in the video?
It’s okay, but it’s still risky to have 2 or more hamsters live together, it’s like “ You are my sibling and I have to live with you, but if you do anything that I don’t like I won’t hesitate to hurt you “ So it’s not recommend but you can, but I would stay on the safe side tho.

I was cringing when they fought with each other...please please don't house any hamster together. They are better off alone. It was a cute vid nonetheless!
Having 2 or 4 roborovski hamsters isn't bad. It depends on the sex of the hamster and on that will they accept it or not.
Uhhh, no. Do your research please. It doesn’t matter the sex, you just shouldn’t keep them together period. Why risk a hamsters death? And if it depends on anything, it’s the age. Hamsters can be together when they are very young but once they reach a certain age, they can become territorial. ;)
Sophia Berger Some hamsters are able to live together, some aren’t. Syrians are territorial where some dwarfs arent, it depends on the breed of hamster. However the robo dwarf hamster which is in this video is able to live together.
@@notbroham8377 Finally, somebody who understands
Yes, technically dwarf hamsters *can* live together, but it’s not recommended. They can still become territorial even after months of living together. Why should you risk death of one of your hamsters? I don’t understand😔
This cage is way to small for even 1 hamster. If you live in the UK, the cage/enclosure needs to be a minimum of 620 square inches (4000cm2/ 80cm×50cm).
If you're in the US, the minimum is 450 square inches.
As a note, it's not a good idea to house 2 or more hamsters together. While dwarves have been able to live in pairs or groups, it's not adviced because things can go from good to ugly in a blink of an eye. It's not uncommon to hear stories of dwarves living together for months or a year+ only for the owner to check on them one day and find a severely injured or dead hamster.
Syrian hamsters need to be solitary past 8 weeks old. They may be fine to live with their litter mates up to that point.
If you do have 2 or more dwarves in 1 enclosure, it will need to be a large one (think 1000 square inches+) you will also need to have enough equipment so that each hamster has 1 (2 wheels, 2 water bottles, 2 food bowls etc) it's also advisable to have another cage on hand in case a fight does break out as they will need to be immediately seperated.
Its probably just a set for the documentary but massive thanks for pointing this out so many people dont know how much space they need :)

Wow a good sized wheelPet stores can't relate.😂 but that cage is to small and basically empty that needs more bedding and entertainment.
Hamsters are best kept alone, as lots of accidents can happen from babbies and them attacking each other its just safer to keep them apart as hamsters are territorial which don't appreciate a friend.
Maybe they are still Babies but i agree the cage is way to small and the wheel
@@exotischernexoten5204 no they look like adults. This breed of hamster doesn't get that big. And i wouldn't doubt for a video not knowing much about hamsters they'll put them together.

The cage is too small for all of them :c
This video is heartbreaking. First off, those are roborovski hamsters, not Russian dwarfs. They are in way to small of a cage. Hamsters need at least 450 square inches of floor space in the u.s and Canada. It’s also never a good idea to House two hamsters together. Even though it’s said you can get away with it if they are dwarfs, just don’t. Especially if they fight. And if you are going to have two, they need two of everything, and a cage that’s at least 800 square inches. The bedding you are using doesn’t look safe, and hamsters need at least 4-6 inches of bedding.
And get that poor hamster an enclosed wheel!
For a big source like you, I am very sad. Please do your research.

Kris Hammer BAHAHA THIS IS GONNA BE STUCK IN MY HEAD ALL NIGHT
Lol i knew someone was gonna comment it 😂
Really disappointed in you BBC. This spreads extremely damaging and harmful misinformation about the needs of hamsters. This cage is far far too small for any breed of hamster. The RSPCA recommend a MINIMUM cage size of 80x50cm floor space. Also, hamsters should never be kept together in the same cage since they’re extremely territorial. This fighting in the video is not cute. It is deadly behaviour and often ends in one brutally killing the other. If kept in the same cage, though not recommended, they should at the very least have 2 wheels, 2 beds and 2 of all cage accessories to avoid fights.

@@Rohgamu That cage is too small for one hamster, let alone the 3+ hamsters they have in there.
This cage is the Zoozone 2! Pretty sure, is 620square inches if I’m correct which is over the minimum, from looking at it tho you can’t really tell but if it is the Zoozone 2 then it’s a good cage!
Yes they should get a bigger cage and each one should get one cage so they dont kill each others. They fight in this video so next time it could be a worse fight!
That seems painful and unsafe and I don’t know if their cage is big enough.
Chewnip you’re right! The cage is way too small, especially for so many hamsters together. One hamster alone should get 450 square inches of space
@@LongingString Either way people are gonna see this and be all,

Plus, why not film them in an actual decent sized cage??? Not only will it show people the correct setup, but don't take them out of their environment and stress them out.
I HIGHLY doubt these hamster will go into a better cage setup, they probably just tossed them back to the pet store where they got them from.
I just want to let you know that you shouldn't feel like you have to "shut up" when trying to help educate people on better animal care. As long as you go about it in a respectful way, people should listen to you. The cage they are in is the Zoozone 2 which is 50x100cm so is correct. Hamsters actually need 600squared and this is just over so is a good cage!! However yeh multiple hamsters is wrong even with “Russians” eventhough these are definitely robos😂😂

It is inhumane to not provide a wheel for a caged hamster. They are living in an environment that is an extremely tiny fraction of the size of the natural environment where hamsters evolved. They deserve to have a wheel where they can run as fast as they want. The wheel surface should be solid without spaces because if there are spaces their legs can slip through and get caught and injured by a wheel that is spinning fast. And the diameter of the wheel should be wide enough so their back doesn’t bend backwards at all while they are running. If their backs bend backwards while running at high speed for a long time that places excessive stress on the hamster’s spine.
That is an awful cage... hamsters need at least 450 square inches of floor space and levels don’t count, they also need a minimum of 6 inches of safe bedding and you shouldn’t have more than one hamster in a cage as they do better alone... they can fight with each other and get hurt really easily.
I'm loving the amount of hamster owners trying to educate in the comments :) ty!
hamsters should not be homed together
Species matters. Dwarf hamsters, excluding chinese, are sometimes safe. Depending on individual temperament, of course. Syrians & chinese dwarfs without exception should live solitary.
I've successfully kept mother/daughter/sister groups. Much annoyed squeaking (eg. when another is playing keep-away with a shelled walnut), but rarely anything worrisome.
Father/son/brother? Mature males have always eventually become aggressive towards other mature males. At which point I separate them permanently. Risk > benefit.
But for a year or less, they nest together, participate in mutual grooming, play wrestle, and so on.
My girls are far more attached to each other than me. Our relationship is of tolerance & respect.
My boys are cuddle-bugs, all actively seek affection & play. I provide worse companionship than a fellow hamster. Curse hormones.
More worried about the food dish. With the exception of low-value pellets, it is an incredible waste of enrichment. :(

@@rodrigoavalos3656 rude
@@rodrigoavalos3656 I know most people probably don’t care about these small animals, but if you have them as a pet I’d assume you’d want to take care of them properly. They’re fairly recently domesticated so the idea that they “don’t need much space cause they’re small” is false. If you lived your whole life in captivity you’d probably at least want your cell to be big.
Hamsters aren’t suppose to be kept together once weened they are social and can fight
