    Never gave much thought into lighthouses until one of your videos showed up in my recommend. Now I have seen all of yours and now am getting to know mine on Lake Superior. Thanks

    Fascinating, I grew up in Mumbles not far from that lighthouse, I remember the fog horn sounding at night as I slept, somehow I found it very comforting. Seeing your other videos I suspect you didn't being so close! Good to see inside the tower.
    I never ventured over to the lighthouse, the tide is treacherous at that point, Swansea bay has a huge tidal range at 10.5m, a schoolmate drowned in that exact area. I learned a great respect for the sea living in that area. Great videos BTW, the intimate nature of the videos is captivating.

      Thank you very much for that, sad to hear about your schoolmate.
      In some of my videos if it is a lighthouse that I haven't been on before and haven't yet gotten used to the fog horn, then it can be a pain, but it is quite surprising what you soon get used to noise wise on a Lighthouse.
      Thanks again for the kind words, stay safe and take care.

    Lovely bonus video Peter but that lighthouse at Mumbles was an extraordinary little complex, shame you did not get the chance to roam freely. I always wonder what it was like for the people who built, worked and lived in these places before our modern technology.

      Hi Stephen, Yes, apart from the Tide I was also very conscious of taking up 2 men's time from the Depot and I didn't want to kill the Golden Goose by being too greedy. Cheers and stay safe

    Another outstanding job Mr. Halil. I never had any lighthouse questions before I saw your vids. I am still amazed when I learned from you that many of the lens floated on mercury but I can learn more from the internet. What was your favorite 'duty'? How were you assigned? Was it like a union job (my American perspective) where the senior guy got his choice and somebody had to retire or fall out to move up, or the Navy way. If you're at the bottom, you are going where you are told. More senior you get a choice, but sometimes it is between nothing close to what you hoped for and something worse. I'll have a shorter question next week. Thanks Pete.
    I have noticed a UA-cam record. I have never noticed a single dislike on your many vids, congrats!

      Hi Bender, Basically promotion was dead mans shoes!, next in seniority. As for getting posted, most of us were sent wherever and whenever, however there did appear to be a few golden boys that got what they wanted, but I guess that happens in most companies Lol, Cheers and stay safe.

    Lovely video. Not seen that system for generating the flash before. Re the lightship and allocations did the keepers have any choice? I guess not re getting someone to do the least desirable postings. Did you get better pay for being on a lightship? must have been appalling getting thrown around in a storm and ship violently snatching at its mooring. At least in a powered vessel could steam into the waves.

    • @PeterHalil
      @PeterHalil 4 роки тому +1

      Hi The Lighthouse Keepers and the Lightshipmen were both different jobs with Trinity House and we didn't cross over. I don't know what the pay was like on a Lightship, hopefully they got more but perhaps if any lightship crews see this then they can enlighten us all.
      We could in theory request a certain Lighthouse but it would rely on a place being vacant and nobody senior to you wanting it also, cheers.
