    How does the Saint define “hell”? Does he refer to hades or gehenna? I’ve always wondered how to read this difficult saying. St. Silouan is one of my personal favorites among the Saints.

      St. Silouan refers to hell as hades. Hell is separation from God. But this doesn’t mean that Silouan willingly separated himself from God. He willingly condemned himself as unworthy of God, and learned to experience that state at will, because it humbled his mind, and so brought to nothing the enemy’s tempting thoughts of pride.
