Somehting that impressed upon me of the chromatic approach, or passing notes, by Carol Kaye was, "Listen, for where you're at in yoru playing, the bass does three things. You root the chord, you keep rhythm, and you announce the chord changes by playing those passing notes. You do those things pretty well. Now, STOP ANALYZING EVERYTHING AND FEEL WHAT TO PLAY!" Yes, she got upset with me.

Love Carol Kaye...you can use so many superlatives to describe her: genius, legend, pioneer, etc. But, she's always struck me as someone who is irked by people who don't understand music as well as her. Like she doesn't comprehend how someone could Not know what she knows.

Superb lesson: typical Scott where he'll give you some tools, explain how it all works really well and then gets you to do the work so you can apply the learning yourself. For transparency's sake I will say I'm a member of SBL and have also paid for some additional courses but no one else comes near to Scott & team. I'm a bit of a bass newbie really (am an OK guitar player) but loving every second of learning with SBL: yes he can make you work hard but it's all so full of joy.. Do get the free trial if you haven't already, and frankly I'd get a membership if you can afford it: so much great stuff in there. Hope you're all staying safe and enjoying your musical adventures out there.
