Best stairs video yet. 2 things . Use a trammel point or hypotenuse to make both stringers perfect and put the templet guide at a 45 degree on plywood, add 2 slots with washers on the sides and adjust rise and run for every different spec. That way, no total layout, just 1.

There is a very good article on building closed and open stairs in Fine Woodworking September/October, 1981, No. 30, pages 48-55. The title of the article is "Building Stairs: Harry Waldemar shows the old-time way to a custom job". The magazine is published by Taunton Press, P.O. Box 355, Newtown, CT 06470 I have been building stairs for over 40 years and do it the same way as the article. The most recent set I built were with straight carriages and so I used LVLs because the stairs were about 18 feet in length and hardwood cannot be bought in that length. The LVLs were 1-3/4' x 15" x 20'. I used two on the outside and one down the middle. The LVLs were much cheaper than using enough lumber to laminate that much. The lumber yard gave me a good deal on them because a customer had returned them. For three of them I paid $180. For the inside of the carriages I sawed veneers from a piece of wood and matched the ends on the stringers in such a way that the joint would be the shortest length across.

A nosing piece at the top is not a step. Now that top riser is taller

I can’t seem to find the videos you mentioned about the wedges and the template. Any chance you could link to them?
