    Let’s not forget his boldness in wheel-to-wheel racing and pace right out of the gates when he joined Red Bull initially. Plus if Williams make a good car that’s comfortable to drive, stable, reasonably quick, we might really see Alex come into his own even under the spotlight

Latifi has improved and will only get better, on top of the fact that Alex will be coming off a year out of formula 1 into a new team. Expecting .5 second gap is unrealistic. But if the gap is say .3, and by the end of the season Alex has comprehensively beat Latifi like Alex did in f2 when they were teammates in Dams, then Alex solidifies his seat.

    I think he’ll do alright, his debut season in 2019 I think was rather impressive, especially considering he had never touched an F1 car in his life prior to 2019 pre-season testing, different to Norris and Russel. I think Latifi might have an early advantage over him (because a year out of F1 can take its toll), but overall I think Albon will do a solid job.

  • @markymarknj
    @markymarknj 3 роки тому +53

    I think that Alex was brought up to the top team way too fast; he never had a chance to develop at TR/AT. He was thrown in to the deep end before he really learned to swim. I don't think his first stint in F1 is really a good yardstick by which to judge Albon.
    As for his upcoming tenure at Williams, I don't know if AA has to hit the ground running; I think that steady, consistent progress would be more than good enough. After all, he's been out of the sport for a year; he's going to a new team; and, even if the regs weren't changing, he's going to a new car. Even under the best of circumstances, going to a new team is challenging to drivers; just look at Sainz at Ferrari, Ricciardo at McLaren, or Vettel at AM. I think that, as long as Alex is even with or slightly better than Latifi; if he shows progress (i.e. improvements in qualifying and results) each week; then I think that'll be enough.
    Can Albon do well? Has Gasly done well in his return to AT?
    In any case, I'm STOKED that Alex Albon is back! He's one of the nicest, most genuine guys in F1, and I'd like to see him succeed.

    I saw this graphic on instagram somewhere comparing how Albon and Checo have roughly the same qualifying gap to Max (arnd 7 tenths) and that Checo's average race result was only 1 position higher than Albon's. And considering Checo is a seasoned veteron of 10 years and Alex a mere rookie, i think that really does go to show that Albon at the very least does have the talent to become a solid, reliable performer (like Checo was in his force india days)

    • @tanyaghosh1311
      @tanyaghosh1311 2 роки тому

      There's no way that the average race result was only 1 position higher...that has to be a lie. Comparing Albons 2020 season to Checo's 2021 season (keeping in mind Albon has had 6 months to adapt to the car in 2019 while Checo is using 2021 to adapt as well), it is easy to understand why Checos results are more skewed and inconsistent.
      1. However, Checo got 1 race win in 22 races which Albon could not manage in 28 races for RB.
      2. Checo got 4 podiums (3 back to back) in 3rd place while Albon managed only 2 (one of which was just luck because Checo's car caught on fire in Bahrain) with 15 more races.
      3. Perez scored 190pts in 22 races (3 DNFs) vs Albon, who scored 197 pts in 38 F1 races (3 DNFs).
      4. Albons most recurring end results (modal position) was P6 while his avg. end result was 7.57 which you would round up to 8.
      5. Checos most recurring end result (modal position) was P4 while his avg. end result was P5.
      Tbh, Albon never showed any magic in Toro Rosso and under performed in Red Bull. I'm a little unsure as to why everyone is so sure he is this major talent.

    Gasly and Albon are both great drivers but plagued by Red bull, in the right car they can both win a championship without a doubt. Latifi I feel is getting the Lance treatment so far in his career but In my opinion is comparable with Bottas through ties with George. Imagine jumping into a team with a driver like George, no matter the occasion your going to struggle against him just like Hamilton or Verstappen. But Latifi has been doing a fairly solid job, considering George squeezed in to a car he wasn't supposed to drive last minute and was challenging Bottas for poll straight away and on target for a win. I think Albon is a pretty safe bet for any team and I think worse case he's a Sainz level driver, we all know Sainz is a legend in his own right. ;)

    It's disrespect to Latifi to say that Albon is the Number 1 driver for Williams without even starting a race with the team. Albon should be considered the #2 driver and let next season play itself out. If you don't believe me, then just look at Sainz at Ferrari, Ricciardo at McLaren, or Vettel at AM. Then, to do so after having been out for a year? Give me a break! @@markymarknj to be fair, Alex has been putting in work behind the scenes for RB this year. So he's technically not that far behind... But unfortunately all that work he had done, he won't be able to utilize it for next season. But for RB, the team is definitely seeing the results for his hard work.
      Even if Williams is done designing next year's car, Alex is still currently a RB driver. I doubt Williams will disclose any confidential information to Alex about their new car... But I'm sure Latifi has been given some sneak peeks about what's going on behind the scenes.
      With that said, Alex is still a few months behind Latifi in terms of what's going on for 2022. I'm hoping for a successful preseason testing for Alex and for him to be competitive right off the bat!

    i think he will be fine. He battled Norris competently in F2 in a smaller team. He exceeded expectation in his first half season with RB. He did struggle in the 2nd season, but he did have some fine result. Im happy but really surprised he got that seat given how many rookies are out there. As for being nice, Russell and Norris are both very nice and non-braggish

    Hoping Alex does well next year. I'm not a fan of Red Bull's approach of switching drivers around like socks instead of giving them the chance to develop and reach their full potential. He should have been given a full season or two to mature at Toro Rosso instead of being thrown against Max halfway to his debut season.

    Unless the Williams takes a big step forward or backward for 2022 the bar to measure Albon's success will be what Russell has done in the Williams the last couple years. Getting into Q3 consistently and getting into the points on occasion basically.
    The reason they seem more comparable to me is that Albon was previously seen as a 2nd driver for a top team and Russell is seen as a 2nd driver for a top team in the near future.

    Alex has got to go into 2022 treating it like it is his last chance in F1 and he may never get this kind of opportunity again, because there are a lot of young drivers in the junior formula's who are waiting in the wings and would give anything to have his seat. Williams are also hoping to move up the grid, so he's got to deliver on that as well on and off the track. The environment at Williams may not be the high pressured environment that we see at Red Bull, but that doesn't mean there's won't be any pressure on his shoulders next season.
    All in all, I hope he fulfils his potential at Williams! He is a great talent and deserves to have a great F1 career!

    It was always too fast, too soon for Alex. Lewis taking podiums away from him and going up against Max, just drained his confidence in 2020. The media didn't make things any better when they constantly said "you're fighting for your Red Bull career". I remember that interview and his reaction was like "woah, okay". Lower expectations in Williams is exactly what he needs to be comfortable and be at his best, because when he is, he's up there with the best in the midfield. @@jacoobk Perez has gotten better because this year's car is an evolution from last year's. RB worked out most of the flaws from the previous car (with the help of Albon). So it's unfair to say that Perez is better than Albon/Gas while in the 2nd seat... Because Albon/Gas didn't have the same setup that Perez currently has. When Albon/Gas were at RB, that car was terribly flawed. Perez is currently reaping the rewards of 2 years of worth of positive changes. To balance out the competition, both Albon and Gas should drive the current car in see where they all stand. That is only fair.

    We all know he was far from prioritized in the Red Bull. And even Marko has come out and stated they've compromised his races to benefit Max quite a few times. So I don't think he is as slow as that car made him out to be.
    I mean, the 2021 car was way more easy to handle and even Perez was still finishing 30+ seconds behind Max in plenty of races. Not to mention having poor qualifyings similar to Alex in 2020.
