      I mean, it's a product that has been available since the early 1970s, so yeah, there is a small market for it.

    I wonder if this would be useful in a VR application, maybe using it for creating a wind like effect on your face, but I am unsure if this device would have any significant drawbacks compared to regular fans. From what I've seen (very little) most start-ups developing these sorts of VR add-ons use regular fans.
    One obvious advantage is the immediate start up of the piezoelectric fan, which means you can create the "wind effect" without any start up delay.

      That would be amazing to get little blasts of wind on your face after an explosion in a VR game. Or even opening a door or window of a moving vehicle.

      @@thebaddestogre-3698 Yea, I was thinking that it would be best to have a minimum of 3→4 of these solid state fans. Aimed partially at your neck, you'd be able to give more accurate directional wind effect. If you used binaural audio to create a truly 3D wind effect, the player would be able to tell exactly which direction that the wind is coming from.
      I'm also assuming that these solid state fans can get a lot smaller than traditional fans.

      @@thebaddestogre-3698 This fan has 0 static pressure. meaning it moves air but you wont really feel the air. Its boggling to see it move smoke as well as a normal small slow fan but feel only the tinniest amount of force from the blowing air. so unfortunately it would not work in VR plus it would take way more room than a small fan.

    where does the buzzing noise come from?
    Is it coming from the flapping of the blade back and forth making the swoosh sound?
    or is it of electrical nature?

    So cool.
    I would assume it would be extremely cheap to mass produce on a large scale.
    Seeing quarts watch scale ability.
    But could the “fin” be reshaped to push more air.
    I was thinking in air conditioning/heat pumps. Would this be sufficient.
    There’s a constant market for more efficient seer rates.
    If the cooling fans would run off milliamperes that could be a game changer.
    Or even the fins themselves become the mechanics for moving air. That could also make the heat exchanger “potentially” more compact.

    I fell in love with your idea and work just a week ago; thanks so much for the update and Intel. VHB tape a unit to the bottom of a foam glider? i would love to see this tech take flight with some sort of drone... even if it needed a slingshot launch assist.
    I suppose this design is also a type of innately explosion proof ventilation, and might win you a big methane or fossil fuels type client?
    what happens when you try to drive fluid with it? it would be fun to measure performance while in the dynamic environment of a supercritical gas chamber.

    Are there any benefits to using them in arrays. Specifically phased arrays.
    Would be interesting to examine how the shedding vortexes interact at these frequencies.
    Amazing product.

    Hi, the geometry of the fan looks very simple. Is this to keep the flexing within elastic deformation or is it a different reason? Could the fan be a different shape to maximize airflow / make more white noise than a single audio frequency? What are the effects of putting fans like these in parallel or series? Thank you

      The thing has only one resonant frequency, so why do you want to put other frequencies through it? Other than curiosity of course ;)
      If ou feed it a nonresonant frequency then you simply make it inefficient.

      @@rhalfik I'm not asking about being able to input different electrical frequencies. I was worried that this would make a hum at a narrow frequency range and if changing the geometry could help flatten the frequency response.

    What are the advantages of this over an induction based design? A flex PCB coil between 2 permanent magnets would allow something similar. I assume it’s less efficient and permanent magnets might loose strength, but it would be a whole lot more cheaply producible.

      A piezoelectric crystal generates no magnetic field.

      Hi Seppe! At the present, induction would be cheaper. However, it is also heavier, larger and higher powered.

    Maybe it can be used to move fluid on microfluidic channels inside 3D chips without fear of it breaking down ans with little power.

    How much does it cost to make 1 unit. $1,100 seem too high for a item that probably cost a few dollars in material. If you get the price way cheaper people could get them in there hands. They would find so many more uses for it. More than you could even imagine.

    When I worked for the phone company, they had underground repair stations that had to be checked for gas buildup before entry. Would running a to be determined number of these things constantly in those.chambers keep the bad air from building up?

      Hi Colleen! The fan is not really a good pump, i.e. the ability to transport air from one location to another through a tube is very limitied.

      @@MideTech sounds great, but even more. What if we put heat pipes, the one out of copper and water vapor inside, on the ceiling, from one side to another multiple rows, while being cooled by this small fan. Would that be enough to cool the whole room even on hot days?
