    I had a fantastic phone conversation with the local priest yesterday and i am attending my first mass on Saturday (the priest suggested i come to a mass with less people first as i told him i get very nervous meeting new people) I was raised Anglican but fell away in my teenage years and 20 years of atheism followed then one day i watched a debate with a man called john Lennox who is a mathematician professor at oxford and also a Christian and what he said made me realize i had to investigate Christianity's claims with an unbiased mind , a few months later after reading a ton of books and research i fully believed in the death and resurrection of Christ (which was very shocking to me as i didnt expect the outcome). Then i started to think about the various denominational claims (James letter made me really question sola fide) and through my reading the writings of the saints and church fathers i saw that the fullness of the faith lie in Catholicism , Catholic church was THE church established by Jesus through the apostle Peter the first Pope. Then i had to tell my completely protestant family lol that was fun XD and after the initial shock due to the built in anti Catholicism that is found in Protestantism we started to talk and i explained and showed them that what they thought was the catholic church was not the catholic church at all , Catholics dont worship Mary ect and they came around to accepting my choice and i now have their full blessing in becoming Catholic , my mother told me the other day that she could not deny (what we call) the miracle of my conversion (which she had been praying to happen for 20 years) and that the Holy spirit is clearly drawing me in this direction :)

      @saintejeannedarc9460 5 місяців тому

      @@michaelogrady232 Does it really matter though? I think it's only because the cross is the ultimate symbol of Christianity. Every non Christian knows, when they see a cross, it's a Christian symbol. So I hope this isn't another protestant/Catholic argument, whether it should be an empty tomb or an empty cross to represent. The handy thing about the cross as a symbol of the resurrection, is that even I can draw a cross. I couldn't depict the empty tomb though.

      Either way, I know Joe Heschmeyer on “Shameless Popery” had done some video series on talking with JW and Mormons. He goes over the basic arguments and has suggestions on how to converse. I believe he and his wife actually had JWs come by a lot when they were living somewhere, so he has experience in that area.

    The fried fish one is actually funny as there is a grain of truth there… but it also misses much of the point. With Lenten abstinence from meat we have built-in moments of reflection throughout the day to reorientate ourselves to Christ and our need for him. We change our routine out of obedience and love. These actions are a form of prayer. And this is unifying as we do this as one with the Church as we go through this season together.
    But yeah, I have laughed at myself for looking forward so much to delicious meals (like Chinese shrimp dishes, as salmon, etc.), that break me out of my usual routine. There is indeed some irony and humor to be found there. And of course the Church understands that abstinence from meat is not going to be the same level of “sacrifice” for everyone - and it never claims that it is. But in prayerfully abstaining in unity with the Church, we are all moving in the same direction. And if we feel inspired and called to sacrifice more, we can certainly do that too.

It's kind of like prohibitions on polygamy or other Church doctrine (or meta things like how we know which books are in the Bible in the first place) where protestants can't draw these conclusions from their supposed view of sola scriptura. Trent, praying to the Holy Spirit isn’t in the Bible argument is weak. If you gonna come up with that, you’ll only make Protestants laugh. There are verses in the Bible that clearly talk about at least praying through the Holy Spirit. What do you think praying in tongues is all about? The Holy Spirit is ONE with God! The Holy Spirit IS GOD! And the whole “trinity isn’t in the Bible” argument is so overused and overdone and WEAK at best! One must be baptized in the name of Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit! You can’t get anymore clear than that. So there are in fact verses that support the trinity! But praying to Mary? Zero! The whole wedding at Cana situation is a very weak supporting argument. The difference is huge! Asking Mary face to face for help vs asking Mary who’s in Heaven and there is zero biblical support that she can hear you. That’s the issue here! As for the sinner’s prayer, it is in fact in the Bible. Stop embarrassing yourself Trent! “All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God.” 1 John 4:15 it means that all it takes is verbally confess that you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior to be saved. You could argue against that, sure, but stop using the “sinner’s prayer isn’t in the Bible” argument! It’s pathetic and weak! Praying to Mary is a much, much bigger issue than a “sinner’s prayer”. Get real!

    On the use of Crucifixes, I love what Ven. Archbishop Fulton Sheen said on the matter "The modern world, which denies personal guilt and admits only social crimes, which has no place for personal repentance but only public reforms, has divorced Christ from His Cross; the Bridegroom and Bride have been pulled apart. What God hath joined together, men have torn asunder. As a result, to the left is the Cross; to the right is Christ. Each has awaited new partners who will pick them up in a kind of second and adulterous union. Communism comes along and picks up the meaningless Cross; Western post-Christian civilization chooses the unscarred Christ.
    Communism has chosen the Cross in the sense that it has brought back to an egotistic world a sense of discipline, self-abnegation, surrender, hard work, study, and dedication to supra-individual goals. But the Cross without Christ is sacrifice without love. Hence, Communism has produced a society that is authoritarian, cruel, oppressive of human freedom, filled with concentration camps, firing squads, and brain-washings.
    The Western post-Christian civilization has picked up the Christ without His Cross. But a Christ without a sacrifice that reconciles the world to God is a cheap, feminized, colourless, itinerant preacher who deserves to be popular for His great Sermon on the Mount, but also merits unpopularity for what He said about His Divinity on the one hand, and divorce, judgment, and hell on the other. This sentimental Christ is patched together with a thousand commonplaces, sustained sometimes by academic etymologists who cannot see the Word for the letters, or distorted beyond personal recognition by a dogmatic principle that anything which is Divine must necessarily be a myth. Without His Cross, He becomes nothing more than a sultry precursor of democracy or a humanitarian who taught brotherhood without tears."

    What is the relationship between mortal sins of omission, good works, and salvation? Many Catholic apologists today say that baptized Christians merely need to avoid mortal sin, but seems like a "sneaky" way of avoiding talking about the role of works in keeping/maintaining one's salvation.

    • @danieljoyce6199

      A proper way of speaking about it, and this is the way the Catechism speaks about it, is that the supernatural life of the soul is animated by charity, just as our natural body is animated by our soul. It follows that anything that destroys the gift of charity in us, results in the loss of supernatural life.
      Just how faith is completely lost by believing something contrary to the faith, such as that the Father begot more Sons besides Jesus. It is also lost by omitting beliefs essential to the faith, for example the Trinity. This is because faith is "a firm resolve to everywhere and always hold to everything revealed by God, because it is revealed by God".
      In the same way charity is a firm resolve to everywhere and always will the good of God, because he is God, and by extension the good of our neighbors, because they belong to God. Now to omit something essential to the love of God, or to commit something contrary to the love of God completely destroys charity, as heresy destroys faith. These things we call "mortal sins" because they destroy charity, which is the life of the spiritual organism.

      Is the grave refusal to do a good work a mortal sin?
      (Yes, "grave refusal" begs for definition and clarification, but I have in mind Jesus' words regarding the consequences of not bearing fruit, not caring for the poor, hungry, thirsty, naked, imprisoned, etc., like the case of the rich man and Lazarus.)
      If yes, then wouldn't it be somewhat misleading to say "all you have to do is avoid mortal sin" and perhaps incorrect to say "salvation is not dependent on doing good works but merely avoiding mortal sin"?

      So sure, feeding your kids is a work that's required for salvation. But it's important to caveat this with the acknowledgement that feeding your kids doesn't _earn_ you salvation; it's a work required to retain grace from God because letting your children is so heinous

      @Matt-1926 5 місяців тому

      I think the reason why some apologists say this is because of the mindset that the Catholic Church teaches that good works must be done in order to be saved. Technically they don't, think about the disabled, they might be incapable of doing any good works.
      Also, wanted to add that salvation isn't depended on doing good works, it is dependent on remaining in a state of grace, which for some might only be possible through good works, for others no good works might be necessary.
      I think at the end of the day we need to keep in mind that there is no one size fits all here, so it really isn't possible to lay out one ground rule for the "relationship between mortal sins of omission, good works, and salvation" that are going to fit every single persons life.

The wedding feast at Cana is one of my favorite accounts. Jesus' very first public miracle was at the request of his mother who was making the request on behalf of someone who was obviously close to her. Her last words in scripture are "do whatever he tells you" and then he performs the miracle of water to wine. There is so much rich and deep meaning there that if you don't see it you are just holding onto bias.

    The only thing that was cringe about the first one was the alleged rebuttal.
    0:31 "Where does Scripture say that the only prayers we can say are those found in Scripture?"
    This is a classic strawman. The meme does not imply that this is the case in any way. The objection that protestants have to praying to Mary do not relate to the specific words said, but rather that they are directed to Mary instead of to God.
    1:03 "Also, one reason that the Bible probably wouldn't record prayers to Mary in heaven is that she was still alive."
    So do you think that people were going physically to Mary after Jesus' ascension and asking her her to pray to Jesus to do things for them? It's not impossible, but again, it's just not seen at all in Scripture. We see a lot of prayers going directly to God, though, and that Jesus is the one mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2;5)
    1:18 "But the Bible does contain people making _requests_ to Mary." (emphasis in original)
    This is a huge reach and one not worth making. After all, we see God make a request to Satan in Job; does that mean that God prays to Satan? We see Jesus make a request to have the people brought to Him for healing; does that mean Jesus prays to people? We see Jesus make a request of Judas Iscariot; does that mean Jesus prays to Judas Iscariot?

There is no directive, no history of the Jews ever doing it, and Jesus specifically instructed us how to pray, and it was only to God. Every instruction of request for prayer in the NT (or OT) was always to pray to God. This is why we only accept and only practice, praying only to God.

    Interesting titbit:
    In Revelation, the 24 heavenly Elders have the prayers of the saints in bowls which they offer to God.
    Saints isn't used in the New Testament referring to dead saints but actually Christians who are still alive on Earth.
    So these heavenly beings, being either angels or humans or representative of some heavenly truth, act as intermediaries and give the prayers of these people on Earth to God. So they are literally interceding and giving prayers to God that God didn't already receive. And these prayers were made by humans who are still alive on Earth. Heavenly intercession confirmed by the Bible.

    Very thought-provoking, as usual. I appreciate your work in the Kingdom. I'm a Calvinist. I would love to hear your take on a couple of books I published. I also have one coming out this year on a defense of a modified form of Calvinism. I expect to get some heat from that one. But your insights would be most helpful. The author name is RS Trifulescu. The first two works are on Christianity basics. I know you are quite busy, so no problem if you don't have time for this amateur. God bless you and your work!

    Trent, where in the bible is the protestant prayer to acceptJesus as their personal Lord and savior?

  • @Beanie1879
    @Beanie1879 5 місяців тому +1

    Actually that first meme is correct. The bible doesnt support praying to Mary and neither does the catholic church, because God is the only one we pray to and we ask for prayers of Mary and the saints.

      But we do pray to Mary because, as Trent said, "pray" is just another word for "petition"

    • @Matt-1926
      @Matt-1926 5 місяців тому +2

      Just want to point out that the word pray means to ask. So the meaning of the phrase praying to Mary actually means we ask for the prayers of Mary and the saints.
      Basically we pray(ask) Mary to pray(ask) God on our behalf.
      Just because modern day Christians choose to define the word pray differently than it has been defined all throughout history doesn't mean it's not supported.

    If I make a request of Mary, is it the same as making a request of my mother, who also happens to be in Heaven?
    You can pray to anyone, but is it efficacious? Only God can answer prayer. And we don’t need priests or saints to intercede on our behalf because there is only one mediator between God and man, Jesus Christ.

    And I guess we're starting out 30 seconds in with an argument from silence followed by farcical misdirection. Is this really the direction you want to take? Just to show how utterly absurd this line of thinking is, I'm going to ask the patron saint of tasty condiments to pass the ketchup. Oh, the dead guy isn't going to slide it across the table, you say? Huh--must be a difference between praying for ketchup as opposed to praying for spiritual blessings. Now reverse the thought: should I pray to the passenger sitting next to me in a car for a safe journey? Huh--it's almost like we innately understand that there's nothing to be gained by asking a corporeal entity for supernatural guidance and protection. I'd bet that this stark distinction has something to do why the English language adapted over time in its usage to draw a distinction between the spiritual act of prayer and general inquiry of people to pass the salt.
    So, do you think there might be a bit of a difference between somebody asking Mary to talk to her Son about some wine when they were both physically present at the ceremony versus praying some intercessory prayer to her beyond the grave? Good gravy man. I'm out.

      exactly. And Trent is well smart enough to know his response on that one is ridiculous. He will parse and finely slice every last logical fallacy and bad argument when discussing things like abortion (and I think he does a good job at it), but then all of a sudden those same skills fade away when dealing with a doctrine he doesn't want to admit is wrong. I think Trent brings a lot to the table and I enjoy his videos but this argument on his part was baaaaaadd.

      @@maxspringer01 Yup. I feel that it's good to be hard on this absurdity specifically because he knows better. A major pet peeve of mine is when those with robust argumentation during debate hurl sloppy low effort responses at things when they're monologuing and know they won't be immediately ripped to shreds by an opponent.

    I agree with most of your responses to these memes, so I'll focus on our disagreements.
    You say meme 5 undermines Protestantism because there is no verse that restricts women from dressing immodestly. Hence, we apparently need a magisterium for that. But Trent...that line of reasoning is very, very problematic. You're essentially saying that we can't use theological reason extracted from Scripture to apply it to concrete issues. Scripture teaches that our primary orientation towards one another should be love, and of course commends inner modesty. Yet, that's inevitably going to have an impact on the kinds of clothes one wears (1 Timothy 2:9, for instance). If someone has a modest and humble disposition, they will wear clothes fitting to that disposition (both men and women). Further, "unnecessary stumbling blocks" also apply to both men and women here; both men and women, if they are thinking in the logic of love, are going to dress so as to love their neighbors in any given context and not occasion sin to the extent they can.
    Now your point that this can only be inferred doesn't in the least rebut Protestantism. Hence why all our confessions (Westminster and Augsburg alike) speak of good and necessary consequence.
    Your rebuttal, ironically, shows one of the major ways the Roman church poorly catechizes people: by teaching people not to use theological reason and actually see the world through Scripture, and let another do the thinking for them.
    PS: When is the last time I fasted? Several times through Lent, and during holy week :)

    • @sivad1025
      @sivad1025 5 місяців тому

      How was Trent's point about not using reason? His point is that we should use reason but scripture provides guard rails.
      The fact is, Protestant churches can't even agree regarding if gay men can get married to each other or if women can be elders. Most Protestants say that women shouldn't be expected to cover their heads because that was merely a tradition. So why can't you conclude that modest dressing is merely a tradition (as many Protestants have concluded!)? Why can't we conclude that because cultural standards have changed so much, cleavage isn't super scandalous and thus it's totally permissible for women to let their breasts out a little?
      Of course we can use reason, but Christians use bad reason all the time which is why the Church is needed to settle disputes, as Jesus describes in Matthew 18. Protestants have no ground to stand on when telling other Protestants that their Biblical interpretation is wrong regarding attire outside your own personal interpretation.
      Of course Jesus gave us reason to convince others. But he also gave us a Church and church authority to correct bad behavior
