    I've had my Q950's for 2 years now. There are things they're great at, and others not so much. Kef really cut a lot of corners on it which is unfortunate. The vinyl wrap is poorly done. I ripped mine off, knocked down the edges and painted them. The lower half of the cabinet isn't braced very well so there are resonances with it. The crossover is very cheaply done. I find the bass on the Q950's to be on the slow slide and missing some details. They do soundstage and image very well and the treble is very smooth. They did take a long time to break in. I didn't like them at first but started to smooth out after 2 weeks and finished smoothing out after a month. I won't be going Kef again going forward. I did just order the ML 60XTi's. Can't wait for them to arrive later this week. :)

      We agree on the vinyl. Ours is torn as well. NOTE: If the bass seems slow, try to pull the speakers away from corners and check out our video on "3 ways to set up tower speakers". This may help with the sound of the KEFs and your new speakers. Enjoy!

      @@airetheaterdesigns it's just the speaker itself. I can tell my how well or not how well my JL subs integrate with my speakers. I'm minimum 2ft away from any wall boundary. My subs have zero issues vanishing in the room when paired with my Focal Chorus 714s, but with the Kefs, they stick out like a sore thumb. I have Dirac in my NAD and when I turn the subs on & off and listen to the differences in the quality of the bass. The Kef just isn't on the same level. I use silver coated cables on my subs, and noticed when I go to a pure copper sub cable, it dumbs down the leading edges on the subs and then they vanish in the room when paired with the Kefs but leave me wanting what used to be there.

      You make a lot of valid points (as a former Kef q950 owner [they were least in a fire last week])

      I would definitely listen to the 2 to see what sound characteristic you prefer. The Focals are around 2X the price so if they are close in sound to you, this would be a consideration. The Focals sound great with certain instruments (we had referenced cymbals in an earlier video) and the KEFs excel in other areas (imaging, strings).

      I have a home theatre system built around 2 pairs of the older KEF Q900's. The system also includes a KEF Q600C and a KEF R400B sub. I agree that with big almost full range speakers you miss out on too much if you set the sub crossover to 80hz and above like many suggest. After much experimenting I've found in my system that it sounds best (to my ears) when I set the crossover for the Q900 front and rears at 40hz and the Q600C center at 50hz. The Q900's go down to 32hz which is lower than specified for the new model Q950. I once read an article that stated above 40hz you can begin to pick source direction bellow 40hz you can't tell where it's come from. With that in mind if your surround speakers can get down near 40hz you will hear a more faithful representation of what the mixing engineer intended in the surround mix.

    How sharp are the highs? All cool technical stuff aside, for a dedicated room, how would you compare the sound of these to the Q Concept 50? (I have a Denon x3800h) How would you compare this to the Bowers & Wilkins 700 Series (the best sound in that showroom)?

    • @airetheaterdesigns
      @airetheaterdesigns  10 місяців тому +1

      The highs are accurate with a small touch of edge....more so than their Meta series. Compared to Q Concept 50...couldn't tell ya...haven't heard them. B&W...the 700s are better with midrange and have more accurate presence/imaging with highs BUT the highs are sharper. Great for guitar but maybe not so much if you are "I hate high frequencies" guy. If you're asking about the S3s, they are also a $7K/pair of speakers. IMO the Q950s are excellent at $2200.00/pair. You also don't need ridiculous amplification to make them sound good. They sound great to us on a Yamaha step-up receiver in our demo room.
      Please buy them through the links in our description if you find us helpful. If you don't like them you can throw them back at Amazon. P.S. You'll probably like them a lot...we like them a lot.

    How's it sound for movies? I don't want to get a receiver and go full surround I've got too much stuff in my room so don't have space for surrounds. Music is my first priority so not going down the soundbar option because it's too much sacrifice with music

    • @airetheaterdesigns
      @airetheaterdesigns  2 роки тому +1

      In most cases, a good music speaker is a good movie speaker. The physical characteristics that provide accuracy, punch and detail are beneficial for both solutions. With that said, these would work very well for video in a 2 channel stereo system due to their clarity with vocals (see the part in the video about the brain havin' to do some figurin') and their bass.
