I'll openly admit I am 100% Team Ciri. I fully look forward to exploring her story, but I appreciate your ability to articulate your hesitation for Ciri but at the same time recognizing that we still know almost nothing about this game yet. Far better than most of the mouth breathers who are crying woke and all this other braindead nonsense. That being said, this whole pro-Ciri vs anti-Ciri discourse is kinda aimless at this point because we don't know what CDPR has planned. We don't know what journey she is going to go on. We don't know where she starts, we don't know where it ends. We don't know what powers or abilities she will or will not have. We just have a single, pre-rendered cinematic trailer that people have apparently decided to summarily judge the finished game on. Call me a fanboy, but I trust CDPR. Loved the previous Witcher games. Loved CP2077, despite it's rocky launch (CDPR fully made up for their fumble through continued support of that game, in my opinion). I'm fully on board the hype train for Witcher 4.
Thanks mate! This was my main reservation over the years, that Ciri would need to change somewhat to be a viable protagonist for a game to be made in a similar vein to the previous entries. Shame that people are devolving the discussion in such a way. I'm happy for the story to go where ever CDPR want now that they've established Ciri as an actual Witcher, because that's what the moment to moment experience of the games need to be imho.
@@MadMattLugosI commented this on another channel, but my personal opinion (as someone who knows some of the Witcher lore but not all of it) is that I don’t care too much if CDPR deviates some from the lore of the books. The reason is because the games are already considered to be their own canon by both CDPR and Sapkowski. Therefore, I don’t mind if they bend the lore a little bit to make this work, as long as it’s done well. Besides, they’ve already changed stuff for previous games, anyway. Also, I agree with the you and the OP about the stupid culture war arguments surrounding this game that are currently happening online. My biggest eye rolls come when I see people saying Ciri looks “ugly” in this trailer and then use that to say the game is “woke”. It’s really weird and it’s also ridiculous to judge a game this early based on a pre-rendered cinematic trailer. Sorry for rambling a little. Great video, keep up the good work
@MadMattLugos Do you think the fact that Ciri is at least 10 years older than she was would make her more complex as a character? She looks mid thirties
@@MadMattLugosthere’s an easy fix for having a compelling game that’s still very much Witcher esc whilst simultaneously offering something truly unique to Ciri. You keep her as is in terms of not being a literal Witcher, and have her explore the other realms/dimensions. That way she is in uncharted territory that is perfect for lore expansion, whilst also having a justification for Ciri as ONLY she could continue the story this way. Whilst also offering unique gameplay because it would have to be adapted to fit her powers better. And because of the unknown you could easily create never before seen enemies that are more powerful than most making her less op. Simples.
@@EnergeticxCheese They're creating a new story so they're going to deviate somewhat from source, that's fine as long as they keep the tone in line with the lore imo. People forget that Ciri was supposed to be much more heavily disfigured from that scar on her face based on the book description, so it's quite ironic (and just weird) that people are complaining about her appearance.
Yeah I know, I was more talking about how her pwers and status make it difficult to write a game around her in the style of the previous games. The devs obvious agree with that sentiment as they've significantly altered her abilities to fit her in to a similar style of protagonist as Geralt.
@@MadMattLugos ciri will still be able to use all her abilities in my opinion but the game will let mastering them by gameplay and limiting them by level like in witcher 1 also her sorcery will be big part of the game along with her recklessness and emotions from what cdpr said ciri will have agency in this story a lot literally whole of this contract can result in death of the girl and we can save her too so most quests will let us do bigger choices than gerald mainly politicks will play a role when we maybe can side with any faction we want from what we know this 3 part saga will be way bigger and more ciri focused with choices that will hopefully conect
Few of my theories and remarks: - Lambert and Keira Metz in the witcher 3 games said they would try to create new witchers without the trial of grasses ( there's a lot of headcanons of the future based on that i will not mention here, because headcanon, and they used the Lynx) - The monster is a Bauk, i don't think we saw or heard of it in any sources, but it is a Eastern european legendary creature, so glad to see it that way! - We know we will have the information on *how* Ciri will become a witcher, Maybe she is a unique case, maybe this new school has a whole bunch of New generation witchers? hard to tell yet ! - Geralt would be proud of her, using a Chain like him in the first ever CGI trailer of Witcher 1 !
I'd love to see a new generation of Witchers, it's part of the reason I was hoping for a prequel so that we could see younger, more wide-eyed or naive Witchers learning their trade.
@@MadMattLugosbut even that wouldn’t be a “new” generation. It would be a different older generation. I think vesimir even said in tw3 that ciris elder blood was the key to making more witchers in the future so I’m assuming they discovered a new way (science does progress over time after all) or her elder blood somehow allowed her to survive the trial of grasses and using that new info will enable them to make a new trial that is viable/more consistently successful for future generations, hence ciri having the medallion of the lynx an entirely new school
I don't think I can post links here but there's an IGN article that explains some things about the trailer. The game takes place "a few years" after Witcher 3. The trailer takes place somewhere in the "far north". She still can do magic and has gotten better at it, so it will be part of her play style alongside witcher talents. It mentions that Ciri does not want to be neutral and apolitical and tries to play the hero but the world doesn't work that way. The events of the trailer are an abridged version of a side-quest chain in the game. The monster is called Bauk and has the ability to see your fears and use your traumas to paralyze you. They took inspiration from Phantom Liberty's chimera tank when designing large monsters. The chain she uses will be part of gameplay.
Good shout, I'll have a read around now that I've actually watched the trailer. Seems like she's learning the lessons every young Witcher learns about neutrality. Youth tries to care, age just looks and stares!
@@MadMattLugos My pleasure, would love to see you talk more on the Witcher world as a mega fan, not enough deep or thought provoking content on this series, the same way there is about other franchises like A Song of Ice and fire etc. I like your input!
@@hal3908 Cheers, I had planned to make my other channel busier with videos, but it was way more time consuming writing and editing videos of that nature.
It doesn’t matter who’s better fit for an open world game. What matters is that Geralt had a trilogy, his story ended great there and now we can see Ciri’s perspective as a full blown Witcher.
It obviously does, as the developers have made significant changes to her abilities as a character so that she fits into the established game systems from the previous titles.
After finishing The Witcher 3 my dream sequel was for Ciri to have a bigger role in it so this is a dream come true game for me. I think Ciri is going to be a legendary Witcher and she learned from the best. Both Vesemir and Geralt.
Game director confirmed that the game is going to take place just few years after the Witcher 3 so I don’t think Ciri would age alot, maybe late 20’s to early 30’s.
Visually the trailer is a masterclass in atmosphere and storytelling. I hope that CDPR finds a lore apropriate way to explain how exactly she survived the trial of the grasses and how it influenced her elder blood, they can't just retcon it away and say "trust us bro", it could even be part of the prologue or something. I don't envy CDPR writers and their difficult task that lies ahead of them. Other than that I really have no objections at this time. I see some people complaining about how shee looks in the trailer and I have some things to say about that: first of all Geralt from "a night to remember" cinematic looks NOTHING like he does ingame so its very possible that the final Ciri model will look different ingame as well. And even if they didn't change her from this cinematic version, calling her unatractive or ugly is just plain grifting at this point. Lets not forget that the game director states that its been many years since TW3 (which could mean she's anywhere between in her 30s or 40s in this cinematic, since witchers age much slower thanks to their mutant metabolism). And lets be real... you would still hit that... Anyway, gonna be a looong 2-3 years as we wait for more details.
I think her blood would bolster her against the trail somewhat, after all, Geralt has/had magical blood with his mother being a sorceress which meant he survived 2 different trials. Bizarre that people have had anything to say about her appearance. Quite ironic tbh, as the scar on her face was described as a much more significant disfigurement in the books compared to how it's presented in the games.
With Ciri becoming a witcher, her elder blood will be tainted and maybe no longer of interest, she also can't have children. It would solve a lot of problems for her. She can still do magic evidently so maybe she will have an ability tree for witcher skills and another for magic.
Yeah, that would be my guess too, makes her completely unimportant to everyone who's ever chased after her if she has no Elder Blood and can't reproduce.
Glad to see you're still with us, Matt. When you were doing your Cyberpunk playthrough I hadn't touched the game myself, but I just reached the Phantom Liberty content and started watching your LP during your recent absence. Great stuff!
Thanks mate! Hadn't planned on disappearing like that, but had personal stuff to deal with. Glad you're enjoying CP2077, what a wild ride that whole game was, it gets better the more you reflect on it I find.
Keep in mind UE5 has it own render engine and sequencer for making movie strips, so CDPR could have made this in engine and used a Metahuman for the characters or just for Ciri. Could it be that the voice from W3 was younger than they wanted (or felt younger to them) so they picked a new one suit her older age?
I’m all for Ciri being the lead honestly, think it’s going to be interesting taking control of a Witcher that isn’t as mature and experienced as veteran like Geralt. Feel this will open up a lot more interesting decision making as she grapples with ugly truth of what being a Witcher actually means.
It doesn’t feel like Ciri is overpowered here. It feels like she has a hard time and I don’t see her having her big teleporting abilities. Something might have happened between the games.
My guess is the Witcher mutation mutes some of her elder powers, and as you go through the game, you choose between Witcher mutation tree and Elder blood tree.
@@Bakemer94or maybe some of her powers were lost/she got sick somehow from the end of the third game so the Witcher mutations were used to save her. That could be an explanation as well
I haven’t seen much commentary about the initial dialogue at the beginning from the father of the village girl clearly mirroring what Geralt would say to Ciri here. Feels like there’s a bit of parallels being explored with the language applying to both characters preparing for a life changing event (the sacrificial village girl and Ciri heating up her potions) two daughters meeting up in a fate/destiny type scenario
Pretty sure we'll be in the far north which was stated by a CDPR dev during an interview - Kovir and Poviss likely. For me its exactly what I wanted W4 to be. In another interview the devs were excited that Ciri is the first Witcher by choice. I'm sure the first part of W4 will show how that came to be.
Yes I'd love to see Kovir. Maby the birth of the school of the lynx too, a thriving school would be amazing. Some returning characters to train them etc. Maby just eskel.
Kovir has always been my number 1 choice, it has that a bit of the element that made Toussaint work well in the Blood and Wine expansion where it's somewhere that feels completely new and foreign compared to the some of the other realms/regions. I hope they have multiple maps like TW3, like Kovir, dol Blathanna and Zerrikania or something.
@@MadMattLugos Yeah, here is the script: Geralt: What... What is this place? Is this the afterlife? Avallac'h: No. Just another of the realities the Spiral leads through... Technologically advanced, but broken. Dying. Geralt: Disgusting. This stench, noise... How can you live here?! Avallac'h: You should know better. This world is inhabited by humans, not elves. There was also a plan for Geralt to give money to a beggar who would show up in CP2077 having become rich from the gold
This reminds me of that part in Lady of the Lake when Ciri visits one of the worlds for a brief time. So basically (my theory) is that it is a world of technologically advanced humans (like us) but at a point in time when the resources are scarce, the planet is extremely polluted and maybe there is or was a nuclear war going on. Sapkowski seems to describe a weird flat rock surface that seemed to be a road (asphalt), a slope made of weird containers and stuff that popped under hooves like fish bellies and smelled like decay (garbage dump), she saw fires on the horizon and dead trees around, she was also covered in dust, which makes me believe that there is either a war going on, a climate change which causes lots of fires or both. I love this part in the book so much.
Somehow, Mad Matt Lugos has returned! When I saw the trailer I immediately thought it would be great to hear your thoughts on it, so I’m glad to see you pop back up to talk about it. I knew I’d be able to get a well informed, level-headed take on this from you. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, the Friends Per Second podcast (stupid name, but that’s beside the point haha) just put out an episode today with an interview with CDPR. Worth a watch.
That was Mad Matt Lugos the Grey, I am Mad Matt Lugos the White. Cheers mate, I don't really know what the discourse is around the trailer, I'm getting a sense of it from some of these comments though, yikes 😅😅 I'll check out the interview, I do occasionally watch that podcast too.
After years of only playing sidemissions and almost finishing the main story of three I am finally doing it right now. And this progression of Ciri seems totally on point imo. In the end she is so tired of running and wants to take matters in her own hands. And her time in Kaer Morhen mattered so much to her. Being a Witcher feels very appropriate since there aren't many left. I think they will make her more of a standard Witcher but maybe evolve the gameplay so she has some more magical powers incorporated with the signs maybe? Seems like that water into lightning thing indicates that. I loved Ciri in three and I'm very excited!
I think her altering her genetics with the trial to get rid of the Elder Blood makes sense, she's seen so many people around her die because of her blood/powers.
Hey Matt, glad that you are back! I'm looking forward to the game. Here's hoping that they can capture the familiar and beloved "witcher feeling" again and that they can optimize their game well enough towards the UE5. Sadly many of the new UE5 titles really aren't running great at all. Be it stutters or heavy realiance on upscaling technology to get decent framerates & frametimes at all.
Good to be back! It's more or less a blank canvas for them after the events of the 3rd game, so it's both exciting and strange wondering where they'll take it from here. The UE5 element really worries me too, especially as CDPR have never really released a well optimised game on day 1.
There is a theory that at the start of the game something happens that will have her go through the trials in order to save her life, and this either destroys or limits her elder blood powers. But We'll see over time.
Matt heard someone was about to trust an an Craite and had to come back to put an end to that 😅 (Welcome back!) Just in case you didn't see this -- in the trailer shown live during The Game Awards, the end title card had Geralt voicing the following: "Time for a new saga. See you on the path." I believe it was actually Doug Cockle as well.
Cheers mate! About time the an Craites were recognised as the existential threat the Lugos clan have always known them to be. I'll have a look at the live shown trailer, I'll try to hold it together 😪
I hope they start the game by explaining how and why she is nerfed to “just” being a Witcher from being the chosen one/child of the elder blood. Maybe it will have to do with a second conjuring of spheres but I guess will have to wait and see
Yeah, that will have to be the focus of the introductory cut-scene or prologue. It has to be her putting herself through the trial of grasses imo, either in an attempt to deliberately get rid of her powers, or to save her after her powers have changed in someway after her interaction with the white frost.
On one hand it's kind of logical choice....already in the books Ciri viewed herself as a witcher (and the ending of the Lady of the Lake book has her going on off on adventures in the world of king Arthur with Galahad ;) while saying she is a witcher :))...but on the other...well the story choices better be explained...how and why she engaged in the trial of Grasses or approximate process...so to mutate herself (and also how in the hell she hid this from Geralt and Yennefer who would be vehement and maybe apalled at this particular choice :)...taking such a deadly risk)...also it seems her magical talent is finally paying off..as she most likely will combine some of her sorceress training what with her draining energy from the water in the cave scene to blast a lightning spell she may have wider arrange of spells than ordinary witcher (though games could have explored the Signs that were not used in games properly like Heliotrope and Somne :))...then the whole lynx medallion..in the books she claimed the cat medallion for herself...though naturally considering the bad reputaion of the Cat School witchers who often were psychopatic killers, turned to hired assassins, spies, to robbery and so on...one can imagine that she would try to take some other sign...maybe it's the reworking of some sort of her cat medallion? Or entire new school of witchers the games invented many that were not in the books (only possibly three are hinted at Cat, Wolf and Griffin when we see Bonhart having medallions of those symbols.....the latest prequel book may introduce somethign new here :))...also I can't help but think that maybe Eskel or Lambert could have been given chance at being protagonists...I would love to explore Eskel more.....but anyway...we shall see how this will fall into the lore...because as always even though the games left the books behind so to speak as the sequels to them...I still hope that they will draw on the books as much as possible and there are some things that never appeared in the games which was lost opportunity,....Ciri and her backstory her life in Cintra, mentions of Calanthe could be made...maybe in some future scene we will see her coming back...home to Cintra to see it after all these years? :) Also mother Nenneke and the temple of Melitele, maybe some other things from Geralt's past and Ciri's own...Brokilon forest, and Eithne...now that would be interesting, There were also many things, including monsters in the books that never appeared in the games...maybe also Geralt will come for some side character role kind of like Vesemir did for Witcher 3? :) It would be nice to see him in that role. Also regarding her mutations...well a bit shame for those emerald green eyes...eyes of Lara Dorren ;). Also the moment when she gets 'dark' with the villagers witnessing it all reminds me of that scene from Tower of the Swallow where she goes about killing people :). ‘You’re dying,’ said the girl with the maimed face. The old man’s hair stood on end, the little that was left. To stop his trembling he clenched his teeth on his sleeve. Cyprian Fripp the Younger uttered a sound as if swallowing with difficult. Then he made no more noise. None. There was absolute silence. ‘What have you done…’ groaned the innkeeper in the silence that followed. ‘What did you do, girl…’ ‘I’m a witcher. I kill monsters’ ‘We’ll hang… They’ll burn down the town and the inn!’ ‘I kill monsters,’ she repeated, her voice suddenly changing to something like amazement." Witcher, Tower of the Swallow
I would have loved to play as Eskel or Lambert too, I thought that there was less pressure to go with Ciri after the White Frost and the Wild Hunt were out of the picture, but they decided to commit to her. I think Ciri sees herself/her powers as a threat to everyone around her, even the world itself, so she likely sought out the trial of grasses knowing that she would either die or eliminate her Elder Blood, but that would at least mean her powers wouldn't be a threat any more and she could stop fleeing. Like you said, Geralt and Yen would never agree to it, so she'd have to seek out other Witcher's on the continent to help her. I like to see them take the story to some of the more exotic locations tbh, Kovir is my number one choice. Cintra would be interesting, but maybe is too close to her lineage and potential royal responsibilities. Eithne and the Elves would be awesome though. I think CDPR have done really well overall with the 2nd and 3rd games in terms of the lore and tone matching up with the books, certain details will be different due to the different mediums, but I think the tone and feel of the game will match up with the source material.
@@MadMattLugos well the visit to Cintra would be no doubt incognito hehe...jokes aside though it would be a sort of fitting somber homecoming experience...Cintra after all these years, sacked in a bloody nilfgaardian conquest, now a imperial province that was so ruined and devastated that after the 'slaughter of Cintra' the dark wounds of that war would be visible still after all those years....anyway...Kovir sounds great! Especially with the snowy setting with the image of htthe lynx medallion....also depending on the choices in W3 Kovir may remain as the only free northern realm? And then there was that....image with the coin and the peaks depicted on it that was released some time ago? Kovir and Poviss being the northernmost regions...well civilized regions as there are lands further supposedly beyond the Dragon Mountains. And yea the motivation to lose the Elder Blood powers or at least mute them because she would feel tired of being hunted because of them is making sense...though I also like to think that maybe the future games will try to lean into the whole flashforward information we have from the books about the future of the witcher land...obviously there's far future of Nimue and Condwiramus....but the time in between...there are several mysteries and things not explained....there was some sort of opening of the Door a magical gateway of sorts mentioned in the books which elves used to leave...or so we're told in the discussion of the far future sorcerersses I mentioned, they talk about it in Lady of the Lake...maybe something of that will get explained? Then obviously some events are too far to the future...so no chance of seeing the Haak invasion for that is still far off decades into the future hehe, but again we shall see...the unicorns claimed that Ciri's elder blood Aen Hen Ichaer powers cannot be disposed of or rejected by her...they are part of her but mutation changing her so drastically could affect that...the powers come out of her genetics after all....Avallac'h even claimed that Ciri's Elder Blood gene was already 'mutated' when Geralt meets him in the Tower of the Swallow book. I'm certainly curious what the story will be of these next games with Ciri as protagonist...I mean story with Geralt throughout the three games was pretty great...Witcher 1 dealt with the people claiming the secrets of witcher mutations and the loose end of Order of the White Rose reformed into Order of Flaming Rose (I was always curious why Sapkowski left the whole thing about the order hanging hehe). Then came the big political schemes with Assassins of Kings, and more personal story with resolving the Wild Hunt loose end from the books. Now what lies ahead? We shall see. There are many places that Ciri could visit....including the places that sadly we could not see in games...but Geralt in the books saw like Dol Blathanna....meeting Francesca Findabair and Ida Emean in person (Ida appears only as megascope projection in the 3d game) and if the Valley of the Flowers...the maybe Dana Meabdh? It could be curious since the elder blood is crucial also for Aen Seidhe elves as the instrument of their salvation in their myths...Aen Elle and how they wanted to use Ciri was dealt with already but the second part.....maybe this will be chance to also set straight the loose end of the Geralt's storylines hehe with Iorveth, Saskia and so on :)...daughter of Borch after all was a nice thing to have in games...maybe the Villlenthretenmerth himself will come back :). The north supposedly sees very rare white dragons....and if dragons...alright wishful thinking aside ;)...there is a lot of unknowns....I hope the game will have that book source at heart still.
Yeah, Cintra would hit all the feels for Ciri, a glimpse into the life she was denied. A time travel element would be fascinating, that's a great theory, it would definitely introduce some more existential dilemmas to replace the lost threat of the White Frost and Wild Hunt. I wonder if some connection to Alvin from the first game would be made as they dabbled in time distortion in that story; as much as they ended up distancing themselves from the plot/story of the first game, maybe they are rewriting large parts of it in the remake to tie it in to these new titles. Food for thought. Great shout with dol Blathanna, I really want to spend some time in a non-human region. Who knows, maybe a full map of Tir Na Lia!
I think they could explore the disconnect of Ciri's position in the setting with her being a witcher in a really interesting way. Perhaps her taking up the role of a witcher is to stop the constant pursuit from every powerful faction and trying to find freedom in a profession typically forced upon people. Guess we'll just have to wait to see what direction they'll take.
It would be an interesting contrast to see how she looks upon being two different kinds of outcasts, from being The Lady of Space and Time to being a (perhaps) ordinary Witcher.
Yeah I know, just made a mistake while discussing it all off the cuff, ironic after I said at the end how I don't often do reaction videos because you inevitably misspeak or make an error that everyone jumps in the comments to correct you on 😁😁 (no issue with being corrected, just made me laugh)
Also sweet reaction, I'm unsure how she is able to channel the elements with being subjected to witcher mutagens, it's some sort of anomaly, she knew how to before, is it her Elder blood? what are they using to explain this I wonder, I imagine they will for sure, the chain is a small callback to the witcher 1 ish, Geralt attempts to use one to keep the striga down in some way
Thanks mate! She had some training on how to channel elements from Yennefer in the books, but ultimately Ciri had very little patience for sorcery, but might have developed it more in the passing years.
Would love to see more dragons, benevolent or otherwise, more magical spell variety and a spell that lets you talk to animals you have to regularly cast upon you by visiting a specific location.
I'm pretty sure CDPR has some in-world lore explanation and justification for how Ciri managed to become a Witcher AND how she's going to be nerfed in this installment of the franchise. Plus, it does look like we're getting a substantial timeskip so we'll see how good (or bad) the direction of the franchise is gonna be.
Yeah definitely, there are plenty of reasons why she might risk going through the trial of grasses, she's always hated how the Elder Blood has constricted her life, and with her responsibility of dealing with the White Frost fulfilled she might risk death to get rid of it.
The trailer breakdown from the director hinted that Ciri is gonna have more of a edge to her than Geralt cause shes much more emotional. So i quite like that a lot if the trial didnt mute her emotions as much as usual. Maybe because of her being a child of elder blood it increased her emotions tenfold, with some feeling that she is cursed by the gods for going against everything and undergoing a trial that only men should usually be able to undertake because of the enotion angle.
She's always had that edge to her tbf, so it would be lore accurate, she's carried that slight princess entitlement with her that always makes her unafraid to speak up for herself.
I always feel like Ciri's story wrapped up nicely in Witcher 3. I have no problem if they wanna make a game about Ciri as the protagonist, but then, she don't have that grounded element that we want from a witcher's story because she's already a powerful character post Witcher 3. My guess is that she lost(or got suppressed) her Elder Blood powers after she decided to take the trial of the grasses. But then again, I feel like it's kinda out of her character to take the risk and go through the trial of the grasses just so she can get that Witcher power. Being taught by Geralt and the gang, she's already a capable Witcher on her own. Making her a "real" witcher kinda feels like they're doing it just for the sake of her being the protagonist of "The Witcher 4". I don't mind if Geralt is not the protagonist, but this one just feels a bit forced. I still feel like a new original witcher story is better than this. But it is what it is. Let's hope this one gonna turn out good.
Yeah fully agree with that, while it's easy to say Geralt's story was finished, Ciri's story was equally finished too. Tough to imagine bigger or badder existential threats than the White Frost or the Wild hunt. With that in mind you could argue they should have told the story of a new Witcher and left both Ciri and Geralt behind, I've always believed that Geralt and Ciri have to come as a pair. I don't think Ciri would go through the Trial solely to become a Witcher, maybe in her pursuit to become a more "normal" person like she's always wanted so that she no longer has to run from multiple pursuers. That would be my guess anyway. Until we see how she goes through the trial and her reasons, it does feel a little forced I suppose. I can still hold out hope for a game as young Vesemir 😁😁
@@MadMattLugos I'd kill to play as a young Vesemir. Man, Witcher's world has soo much potential for new stories (I loved playing as Queen Meve in Thronebreaker). Would love to explore other areas like Zerrikania.
Great analysis, Matt! I had the same thought, that maybe she passed the trial to become a full witcher, resulting in her elder blood powers vanishing. I mean it would take a huge burden of her shoulders and make her more viable as a grounded character, as you explained nicely. And I guess there is no reason for her to keep the powers since she kinda fulfilled her destiny in stopping the white frost? But I'm not too deep in the lore, so there might be some other consequences I'm missing. Anyway, as long as it makes sense within the game's cannon, I really don't care if they follow the books' trajectory or they make up something their own, that is as entertaining as w3. So here is to waiting until, fingers crossed, 2027. I hope that's somewhat realistic.
Cheers mate! They obviously will be treading new ground with the story, so it's going to deviate somewhat from source in terms of the plot, but will keep true to the tone and back story I imagine. Like you said, she fulfilled her destiny as a child of the elder blood by confronting the white frost, so she can finally rid herself of the burden, and the trial was likely the only way she knew how to do it.
Definitely not. He said they are going far north, which in relation to the previous setting would be Kovir and Poviss, and Hengfors. Nilfgaard and Dol Blathanna is far to the south.
Thanks for the vid, after watching this and a few others I'm starting to have a 'fan' theory that Ciri having stopped the White Frost, may have had permanent adverse affects upon her & that the onset of mortality was it's ultimate consequence. Maybe at the start of the game we are presented with this fact & that the only way to mitigate this is for Ciri to undergo the 'Trial of the grasses, which somehow transforms her abilities - a trade off for being able to live. Any thoughts, folks...
That makes a lot of sense to me. My idea was either something like you said, or that Ciri decided she wanted to rid herself of the Elder Blood because it's caused the death of so many people she cared about, so she would be prepared to risk her life in the trial to get rid of it.
I’m curious because I’ve only ever watched the 1st two seasons of the show. I really liked season 1, season 2 was okay. What were your problems with it? I’ve read very little of the books and seen some UA-cam videos of the games
@@rodricbrcomplaining about 'woke' in witcher is like complaining there's alcohol in your beer. The problem with the show is that it was just badly adapted and written.
@ I don’t recall seeing what I would say was woke shit in the first 2 seasons. I did stop watching when Cavill left and definitely could imagine some weird shit happening in season 3
Just bad writing, bad casting, bad costumes, and not feeling anything like the tone from the books or games. While the game obviously took some liberties with the source material, they were true to the tone and ethos of the book imho.
Perhaps this cinematic is a test to see how her being a full Witcher would be excepted, I hope so and that this will not be the case. I would have to play her as a sword wielding mage with her own powers! (Don’t like her face or voice)
I think Ciri would have put herself through the trial to get rid of her Elder Blood powers, not solely to become a Witcher. One of her most important characteristics is how she hates all the death and destruction her powers create for the people around her, getting rid of that would be one of the best things she could do. Also, playing and open world RPG with Ciri's original powers just wouldn't work, she can teleport anywhere at any time. Like I said in the video, CDPR cinematic trailers usually give the characters a different look to how they look in-game, Geralt looks way different in all the Witcher 3 cinematic trailers compared to how he looks in game.
@ good point about her powers and that she wants to get rid of them, I can see that as being the reason she went thu with the trials. That could be the solution to everyone’s anxiety about why she is a Witcher and it makes sense
Well, I said in the video that my preference for the next Witcher game was a prequel with a younger Geralt, as the youngest he is in the books is about 50 years old, which gives a lot of alternatives to explore.
You are the first person to notice her cat eyes. Finally. Jesus christ. There are 10000000 "fans" with witcher tshirts watching the reveal and they did not even notice her eyes. She has not undergone the grasses trial in the books nor the games, so it's going to be a very cool thing to explore
Really? It was so obvious! She must have gone through the trial in some form in the intervening time between these event and the TW3, I think it would be difficult to explain it otherwise.
I thought it was the school of the lynx, maybe something made only for Ciri as you said, to my mind it's sort of a crossbreed between cat and a wolf, for Ciri only to show her history or something, BTW CDPR did a trailer break down to explain somethings too, I love your explanation of what Ciri is in the books, In my mind she's sort of a protagonist but not, as Geralt is the protagonist , as you said she's an object of the story. Now it seems she's taken over Geralt's role in the story rather than what she was, so we can still have witcher mechanics, aspects, how people view her, With a witcher being so alien, imagine how much a female witcher would be to these peasant villages, mages and such who thought to it have been impossible
Lynx are not a cross between wolf and cat... they are 100% cat. They are a medium-sized cat in the wild cat genius. The closest thing to a mix between dog and cat is a Hyena.
@chrisg8989 I know what lynx's are, i mean the amulet could represent something along those lines, for example they are a wild cat yet do still hunt in groups if you know what i mean. The schools take aspects from animals, i mean it takes aspects from both or form a lynx
Yeah, this is basically what I was trying to say in the video, my issue was with Ciri as an overly powerful master of time and space making it difficult for her to be a playable character in a game similar to the previous entries. They needed to meet in the middle somewhat with her abilities, and it seems like that's what they've done, which is very logical to me.
What are you even referring to? I explained multiple perspectives in the video and said I was extremely happy with Ciri as the protagonist with her powers being altered and having seemingly gone through the trial of grasses to become a Witcher.
I’m 30% into my first Witcher 3 run and it’s better than any game I’ve played even Red Dead 2 tbh (even tho it was emotional) Witcher 3 overall still is better to me 😂😂😂
I am fine with Ciri being the protagonist but her being a Witcher breaks a lot of established lore. Would have preferred her relying on her Elder Blood instead.
I’ve only played the games. But if the story in the books is unfold from both perspective then maybe its time to also play the games from her perspective? I understand that Geralt is the agent. I also like the fact that he is a kind of an anti hero and maybe Ciri more clear in her morals but I say, lets us now play the games from her perspective and let us see the world from her eyes!
Well, this is basically what the third game did, it mirrored the experience of the Witcher saga, Geralt desperately trying to catch up with Ciri, Ciri trying to escape her multiple pursuers. It's just difficult to give them a completely equal split in an open world game, especially when one of them is on the run and can't be seen or identified. CDPR have obviously seen the issues with Ciri's original powers and written her new story to change them to fit her into the role of an open-world protagonist.
Im sorry if this offends i promise its not meant to be anything against Ciri as a protagonist in fact i wanted her to be and i agree with the devs where they say she was meant to be. But her going trough the trials is just to lore breaking for me is not a small deviation its contradicts both the books and the previous games. There has never been any official female witchers the part i see ppl mention about cat school and other female witchers comes from fansites and are unoffcial and there has never been anyone thats gone trough the trials as an adult. Not to mention that the knowladge of how to create new witchers was lost: Yes Yennefer did recreate the FIRST part to remove the curse from Uma but that only worked as Uma due to his curse was basicly in a baby/childs body, and all the other witchers condem her for it they know the risks and dont want to use that method anymore. Ciri having elder blood only efects her magical abilty and would not enhance her physicly in any way that could help her survive the trials. I would like to end with this statement from the books that prety much sums up my disaointment: "Are all the stories about the law of surprise just legend?" "All. Coincidence is hard to call destiny." "But you witchers never cease searching?" "We don't. But it doesn't make sense. Nothing makes sense." "You believe that the Child of Destiny will pass the trial without risk?" "We believe such a child wouldn't need the trial."
I don't see what is lore breaking about her going through the trail if she makes that decision herself. Anyone could attempt to go through the trail, they would just be very likely to die. Magical blood does bolster a person against the trial, Geralt is proof of that as his mother was a sorceress and his magical blood was one of the main reasons he was able to survive 2 different trials himself.
@ well that could be specullated that ones blood could help but im not even sure that Visenna was a source.. and there is no proven correlation with how that would efect one going trough the trial of grasses there is no official wommen that has gone trough the trial in the games or the books. In both the games and the books all things point that the practise is lost and fround upon and there is no official or unofficial case where an adult has gone trough the trials.
@@Joel-um8rk It's not really speculation, Geralt was the only Witcher to ever be put through the second trial and he's possibly the only ever child to be born from a sorceress. Visenna wasn't a source? She appears as a young woman when Geralt meets her in the books and Geralt is already 50/60 years old, she is a sorceress. Anyway, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine any human going through the trial, or that a sorcerer would act immorally to help someone go through the trial. The books and games are riddled with sorcerers experimenting with magic in all manner of questionable and immoral ways.
@ she is a sorceres yes a source is like Ciri one that is born with abilitys. Most mages are not mages are not ether infertile because they have the ability to use magic they get infertile as a result of them using magic
But i hope you are right my problem with the TV show was that they deviated to much from the source material the games has allways done small devations but i allways felt they respected the source material, but this thing with the trials seems to go against there own narative as well. It seems like for alot of peapole its not a big deal but if the devs deviate from this whos to say what else at least i can hope its something all of you is still happy about anyway was never my point to start to argue:) just wanted to leave my criticism if ppl agree or not in up to each one
Witcher 3 + Blood and Wine put a nice little bow on Geralt's story... IMO. Ciri being the lead now makes sense to me. Hopefully we will get to visit him and Yen (and play Gwent!)
True, but the main game also wrapped up Ciri's story fairly conclusively too remember. I'm fine with Ciri as the lead with these altered powers from the trailer.
@@MadMattLugos Wrapped up the whole prophecy bit, sure but left the rest open for exploration. She's still super young in W3, while Geralt essentially retires to a vineyard.
@@ChrisYork-xh9zq Like I said, I'm happy with her as the lead in this form, but "The whole prophecy bit" is what her entire story arc revolved around through the books and into the 3rd game. It was reasonable to conclude that her arc was finished post-TW3, that's all I was pointing out. Geralt has existed in the books through being a professional, doing his job, which is why it seems like Ciri is going to be doing something similar, hence the change in her powers.
I don’t mind and I expected that Ciri would be the protagonist but I didn’t expect her to be my Mother! Also, they didn’t need to make her a full Witcher, she has powers of her own, why go the potions route,it’s just dumb.
I'm just happy i got what i was hoping for. Ciri was my favorite character along with Geralt, so i was hoping for her to be the new pertagonist. I was happy how Geralts' story ended in the blood and wine dlc. Now it's time for Ciri. I'm hoping we get to see Geralt teaching her all he knows before she sets off on her own as a witcher. Nice to see she still has the sword Geralt gave her. My only worry is how drastically different she looks in this trailer, I mean, i know she's supposed to be older, but she looks really different from witcher 3. Hopefully, her in-game model looks more like witcher 3 ciri but just a bit older and hoping they use her original voice actress in the game.
My biggest issue is ciri being a witcher. I love ciri but she can't be a witcher. It's impossible. She look great for the game however it dosnt make sense. IF she somehow passed the trial of the grasses she would age slower. So this has to be along time in the future. Women cant pass the trial of the grasses. Ciri was something unique. Yes she had witcher sword training but that's about it. This just doesn't make any sense to me why they would forget such a important well established piece of lore. I can't play this for the lore aspect. I have no problem with ciri as a main character. I kinda expected it at the end of 3. I have a problem with her being a witcher only. That one detail will stop me from buying. To me lore is the most important aspect of video games. Without it you have nothing of value to me.
I don't remember anything that says women/girls can't go through the trial of grasses, it's just never been done because the schools only ever recruited boys. I think it would make sense lore-wise for Ciri to attempt to go through the trial to alter her genetics and blood so that she is never pursued for her powers again. Geralt or Yennefer would never help her go through it, so she'd have to seek out other Witchers to assist her in going through it.
If it was possible to put ciri through the trials they would have done so while she was still young. By not doing so and still training her in swordfighting that's essentially them working with what they have. I believe they also stated it in the books, I can't remember exactly what one but that's why she got sword training from witchers and magic training from yennifer. Plus it's even more dangerous to attempt the trials as a adult
I think you should have more faith in CDPR after what they did in the previous games. Just wait and see what they do. I bet they are making something great that we didn't expect but that we can enjoy.
@@leonlacroix2638 They wouldnt. Trials had 40 percent survival rate and Geralt would not risk it. He trained her to improve her chances of survival, not to make her full-time monster hunter. And also because that was probably the only thing he could offer to a kid in Kaer Morhen to pass time.
@najtrows have you already forgotten Cyber Punk? 2024 CDPR isn't the same people that made W3. The previous games have nothing to do with this new game being made. If we are luckily this new team will emulate W3 as much as possible into WVI. But I guess we'll see.
I feel like it makes sense she is the lead, like in 2013 they even said that Witcher 3 is the end of the story for Geralt.
He's back!! We missed you Matt! Glad you're ok
Thanks mate! Shouldn't have disappeared like that for so long.
Few of my theories and remarks:
- Lambert and Keira Metz in the witcher 3 games said they would try to create new witchers without the trial of grasses ( there's a lot of headcanons of the future based on that i will not mention here, because headcanon, and they used the Lynx)
- The monster is a Bauk, i don't think we saw or heard of it in any sources, but it is a Eastern european legendary creature, so glad to see it that way!
Yes I'd love to see Kovir. And the school of the lynx swordmaster Eskel or lambert. Training new witchers
First time of seen your content, great video its so nice to see someone weigh in who actually knows what they are talking about break it down.
Thanks mate!
@@MadMattLugos My pleasure, would love to see you talk more on the Witcher world as a mega fan, not enough deep or thought provoking content on this series, the same way there is about other franchises like A Song of Ice and fire etc. I like your input!
@@hal3908 I made a video about the Witcher 4 last year on my other channel if you're interested : ua-cam.com/video/_elj2V7nDes/v-deo.html
@@MadMattLugos I watched the video, and it was great! Would love to see you make more! you're a good speaker, honestly.
Good to have you back Matt.
💜💜💜
Unless she already gave birth. Significant time has been passed.
@@DarrenShields-g3u Knowing what she goes through, I doubt it lol
Man you have a point , regards from Poland
Good to see you back 😊
💜💜💜
Pretty sure we'll be in the far north which was stated by a CDPR dev during an interview - Kovir and Poviss likely. For me its exactly what I wanted W4 to be. In another interview the devs were excited that Ciri is the first Witcher by choice. I'm sure the first part of W4 will show how that came to be.
Yes I'd love to see Kovir. Maby the birth of the school of the lynx too, a thriving school would be amazing. Some returning characters to train them etc. Maby just eskel.
It's definitely Kovir and Poviss.
Did you hear about the cut content of W3 where one of the universes Geralt would have visited was the Cyberpunk world?
No way! I hadn't heard anything about that, was it from the section where Geralt travels between worlds with the our pretentious Elven Sage?
@@MadMattLugos Yeah, here is the script:
Geralt: What...
One way to reflect her teleporting abilities in creative way would be to have her teleporting be the "fast travel" mode.
OMG, Matt is alive!
I HAVE RISEN AGAIN
Matt heard someone was about to trust an an Craite and had to come back to put an end to that 😅 (Welcome back!)
Just in case you didn't see this -- in the trailer shown live during The Game Awards, the end title card had Geralt voicing the following: "Time for a new saga. See you on the path." I believe it was actually Doug Cockle as well.
Cheers mate! About time the an Craites were recognised as the existential threat the Lugos clan have always known them to be.
I'll have a look at the live shown trailer, I'll try to hold it together 😪
It was nice to spend some time with the witcher fans. I also noticed that we all want to see Kovir and Poviss).
We all want that life of luxury in Kovir and to never step foot in another Temarian swamp 😁😁
I'm down with playing at Cirilla this is gonna be 🔥
On one hand it's kind of logical choice....already in the books Ciri viewed herself as a witcher (and the ending of the Lady of the Lake book has her going on off on adventures in the world of king Arthur with Galahad ;) while saying she is a witcher :))...but on the other...well the story choices better be explained...how and why she engaged in the trial of Grasses or approximate process...so to mutate herself (and also how in the hell she hid this from Geralt and Yennefer who would be vehement and maybe apalled at this particular choice :)...taking such a deadly risk)...also it seems her magical talent is finally paying off..as she most likely will combine some of her sorceress training what with her draining energy from the water in the cave scene to blast a lightning spell she may have wider arrange of spells than ordinary witcher (though games could have explored the Signs that were not used in games properly like Heliotrope and Somne :))...then the whole lynx medallion..in the books she claimed the cat medallion for herself...though naturally considering the bad reputaion of the Cat School witchers who often were psychopatic killers, turned to hired assassins, spies, to robbery and so on...one can imagine that she would try to take some other sign...maybe it's the reworking of some sort of her cat medallion?
‘What did you do, girl…’
‘I’m a witcher. I kill monsters’
‘We’ll hang… They’ll burn down the town and the inn!’
‘I kill monsters,’ she repeated, her voice suddenly changing to something like amazement." Witcher, Tower of the Swallow
Ciri`s scar was made by Stefan Skellen with an orion (a kind of shuriken), not by Leo.
Would love to see more dragons, benevolent or otherwise, more magical spell variety and a spell that lets you talk to animals you have to regularly cast upon you by visiting a specific location.
would love to see some manticore contracts.
Yeah that would be cool considering the wide variety of them, maybe meet the grown up dragon that 5 Jack Daws adopted 😁
@@MadMattLugos 5 Jack Daws?
@@18wolfspirit Sorry, three jackdaws not 5!! Villentretenmerth , the golden dragon.
@@MadMattLugos I thought you meant Borch.
Would be awesome to go back in time to the golden age of Witchers and play as a 20-something Vesemir learning his trade.
I respect your knowledge of The Witcher. Apart from the fourth one, I'm also waiting for the remake of the first one
I'm very intrigued about how they alter and change the first game, I don't think the story should be kept the same at all tbh.
Geralt uses a chain like that when he fights the Striga does he not?
Yes! It slipped my mind.
I believe Geralt used the chain in a previous game trailer before.
Of course! Haven't seen that opening cinematic from the Witcher 1 for a while.
They said there will be several new locations...hopefully they will show a little of Nilfgaard and maybe Dol Blathanna
Definitely not. He said they are going far north, which in relation to the previous setting would be Kovir and Poviss, and Hengfors. Nilfgaard and Dol Blathanna is far to the south.
@@TH3_P1GG135 Just like Toussaint...we will definitely have dlcs, nothing stops her from going south in a possible dlc
I'd love one of the maps to be in a non-human location. Zerrikania and Ofier are the really exotic options for something completely new aesthetically.
@@natanaelrodrigues1 True, I just meant that bulk of the main game will be in that northern region.
I’ve read very little of the books and seen some UA-cam videos of the games
because the story doesn't apply to the books nor the games. and some other woke shit that ruined the show
@@rodricbrcomplaining about 'woke' in witcher is like complaining there's alcohol in your beer. The problem with the show is that it was just badly adapted and written.
@@Conorp77 yes, and adding wokeness into it worsened it up
@ I don’t recall seeing what I would say was woke shit in the first 2 seasons. I did stop watching when Cavill left and definitely could imagine some weird shit happening in season 3
Just bad writing, bad casting, bad costumes, and not feeling anything like the tone from the books or games. While the game obviously took some liberties with the source material, they were true to the tone and ethos of the book imho.
this trailer is in the unreal engine, this how game will look like, information about this is on the beginning of trailer
It's a pre-rendered cut-scene, it's not how the game will look.
Just like the Witcher 4 trailer, you came out of nowhere.
😁😁😁 Someone sounded the Wild Hunt horn.
After the end of Blood and Wine, I don't think bringing back Geralt again would've been the correct choice.
@@darkone9206 😁😁😁 How dare you not be completely literal on the internet?!?!
@@MadMattLugos Yeh I agree :)
One is not a true fan of the Witcher if you have a problem with Ciri as the main.
What are you even referring to? I explained multiple perspectives in the video and said I was extremely happy with Ciri as the protagonist with her powers being altered and having seemingly gone through the trial of grasses to become a Witcher.
@MadMattLugos wasn't talking about you, just all the other asshats complaining 😜
Fair enough, sorry for getting defensive 😅
Ciri is bae ❤
I think it’s best to comment now before the full game is out, b/c if they are heading in the wrong direction it’s best to let them know now!
Another dev interview. ua-cam.com/video/Sixn4mRqB8Q/v-deo.html
The Witcher is basically bondiana in medieval slavic folk setting. It wouldn't work with woman as main character. IMHO.
I also try to pretend that this sh*tshow from Wokeflix doesn't exist.
I understand you 100%
