another great video. i think online animation is very far from dead, and the community has a lot to show in the near future despite how scattered it may appear. thanks for giving the community such a cool shout out!
i agree but it is being made much harder to assess as places like you-tube and Instagram aren't really that accommodating to new you tubes especially if they animate
I'm excited to see where you and your collaborators take the industry. Huge fan, excited for the next episode of Schmucks to come out (if you haven't abandoned it yet lol)
People act like Newgrounds is a thing of the past. It is still the creative hub that it used to be! Especially after the exodus of animators from UA-cam.
For young people just getting introduced to the world of animation, Newgrounds is probably still the best website to get some exposure to the various approaches to the medium. Though the curation system is pretty strict from what I've heard, it does ensure that the movies and games on the front page are at the very least decent.
NEWGROUNDS WAS FUNNY WHEN WE WERE ALL 12 LIVING IN THE SUBURBS LISTENING TO LINKIN PARK WATCHING DRAGONBALL Z DRINKING PEPSI WHILE PLAYING HALO CO-OP ON THE EASIEST SETTING DURING WHICH WE CONSUMED DORITOS AND LOOKED AT PAINTBALL GUNS ON EBAY IN INTERNET EXPLORER CONNECTED THROUGH AOL ON A 56K MODEM BEFORE HOPPING INTO OUR BALDING FATHERS’ LATEST MIDLIFE-CRISIS-IMPULSE-SPONSORED JAPANESE-BUILT SUV TO HEAD TO THE MALL AND GET MORE SKATEBOARDING SHOES AND THIRD-RATE IRREGULAR LEVIS AND MOUNTAIN BIKE PARTS BEFORE HEADING HOME, VOTING DEMOCRAT AND MASTURBATING TO THE LATEST SEARS CATALOG WHILE HUFFING PAINT IN YOUR GARAGE BEFORE TALKING TO PEDOPHILES ON AIM PRETENDING TO BE WHATEVER CAMWHORE THEY’RE RANTING ABOUT ON MYSPACE WITH A MATRIX QUOTE/ANIME CHARACTER NAME/TRIPLE SIX-ASTERISK-PARENTHESES-SURROUNDED SCREENNAME BEFORE HEADING TO YOUR SUPPOSED “GOOD SCHOOL” IN THE MORNING TO BUY MORE POT TO SMOKE DURING YOUR COUNTER-STRIKE LAN PARTY WITH JIMMY AND THE REST OF HIS FRIENDS TAKING RITALIN AND ADDERALL AND PROZAC EIGHT TIMES A DAY BEFORE TAKING A CASUAL PASS AT LOCAL, STATE OR NATIONAL GOVERNMENTIAL FIGURES, LEGISLATURE, OR STRUCTURE TO APPEAR EDGY AND INTELLIGENT IN FRONT OF YOUR BUDWEISER-SNEAKING, LIMP-WRISTED, NEAR-TO-COLUMBINE SOCIOPATHIC “DEEP” FRIENDS WHO PLAY THE VICTIM WHEN THEY START LOSING ARGUEMENTS SIX DAYS BEFORE THEIR BOTCHED SUICIDE ATTEMPT SIMPLY BECAUSE SCHOOL TRAMP NUMBER TWELVE WOULDN’T GO UNDER THE BLEACHERS WITH THEM TO LET THEM GET TO SECOND BASE BEFORE THEIR THIRTEENTH BIRTHDAY.
Newgrounds is where I found PsychicPebbles, Oney, and Stamper. Those guys have been part of my life for over a decade now I think. And through them i've found other amazing animators and just other amazing creators in general. It really just gave me an appreciation for animation when you can see how long it takes and how much these people must really love it to fight this uphill battle.
Insomniac It's because of this that I'm so mad when people freeboot their animations. People didn't spend months making this for some dickhead to steal it.
I don't know if many people understand how influential this man is going to become. In an era of youtube where everyone complains about the parts of media that suck (movie reviews, retro game reviews, etc.) we finally not only have someone who talks about appreciating art, but also in ways we might not have ever appreciated it before. For example, his watchmen video. I never noticed the mirrored panels on the fearful symmetry chapter, and the importance of color from a secondary palette. His pokemon video showed me just how much a game can bring people together. I'd be here all day if I listed everything this guy has taught me, but it really is staggering just how much I've learned. But in the end, what I love most about this guy is that he's a fan. Fans get a lot of flack for being seen as people who simply ride the coat tails of successful creators. It's an unbelievably wrong frame of mind, though. Fans are what make those creators successful in the first place, and like Kaptain Kristian, they can easily give back to the creators with, in this case, beautifully crafted video essays on why they're so important and brilliant. And honestly, as an artist myself, hearing someone say that about you is one of the best feelings you can possibly have.
I dont know if you are into it, but in the last 3 years a number of anime personalities have popped up with similar styles to this guy, but they cont emit this guys cool vibe.
It was one of the only sites to feature free underground music from artists on the site since 2003. Also has great community contests in the forums, like the Art-Inspired Music Contest on the front page calendar. Original holidays like Pico Day, Robot Day, Pixel Day, there's so much to Newgrounds
Oh Hai friend! Didn't know you had youtube, subscribin. But yeah, NG is my second home, and I'm really happy because since 2013, Tom's supported me in contributing stuff like my annual music contests and annual holiday, I love helping the community, being a part of it, and the occasional upload of my songs, getting positive reviews. And what's most amazing to me, I was following the good well-known artists like you for years before I got known and so it ends up the people I'm a big fan of are a fan of my work, and you even used one of my songs in the sequel to a game I loved (I liked the second one too). I never imagined i'd come so far on the site. Psst, we need to collab again sometime :P you need a song, I'm your man. That is, if this man can make something fitting enough xD. Good luck on Loria, I really want to play that game, it looks beautiful, but so does the other games you've made. Someday I wanna crack out a mystery/horror point 'n' clicker I wrote. Your style inspired it. Keep up the great work man! :)
Not to mention that the indie game movement started with flash developers, such as Edmund Mcmillen, who started posting stuff on newgrounds and went on to produce Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, or The Behemoth, with Castle Crashers and Battleblock Theater! We all should be thankful of the wonderful community of that website.
But it was much harder to find good content. Newgrounds gave developers a dedicated place to host and display your games and let people experience them without having to install them. There were some indie gaming communities prior, but Newgrounds was incredibly influential in providing a widely viewed platform. Not only that, but the fact that Alien Hominid was made by a bunch of Newgrounds veterans and was one of the first widely published retail indie games. I'd say Newgrounds is as important or maybe even more important than something like Cave Story was to the rise of indies.
Everyone's talking about new grounds and how they watched porn there as kids... Here I am thinking: "I thought newgrounds was a place where I played games"
So much love and respect. Newgrounds was HUGE for me growing up. So glad to have seen these content creators go on to bigger, better things. Happy to call a few of them my friends, too. Extremely inspiring all the way around.
I still following people like Arin Hanson(Egoraptor), Ross O'Donovan(Rubber Ninja/Rubber Ross), OneyNG, The Behemoth, Edmund McMillen, Super Flash Bros since their humble beginnings on newgrounds and they ALL make great content to this very day
Ahhh good old Egoraptor. I bought the metalgear awesome t-shirt back in the day. I could voice over every single line from the metal gear awesome vids with pinpoint accuracy and intonation because I watched and loved them so much. As a kid I loved newgrounds. It, along with AlbinoBlackSheep, were instrumental to me becoming who I am today. While AlbinoBlackSheep had some amazing (flash) vids, the site itself was rather lackluster and its lack of community and proper community moderation made sure Newgrounds became the bigger repository for artistic expression.
I am a high school English teacher. A student recommended I check out this video. I have never heard of Newgrounds before, but from the way it's described it sounds like it the online animation equivalent of Image Comics. I'll be watching for the next developments in this new animation revolution.
AWESOME! I worked at Warner Bros Online back in 2000 animating Lobo, Gotham Girls and Looney Tunes in Flash and we spent HUGE parts of our day scoping Newgrounds. Absolutely love this vid/doc - great job!
Damn, what a trip down memory lane. I remember watching stuff on Newgrounds, Stickdeath, Jay Donaldson, etc. when I was a teenager. I was amazed by XiaoXiao and a thousand more short clips from all around those websites (most of them now dead and forever lost). No doubt, that's what got me into Flash and animation. Today, I work as a lead 3D artist for animation, I still have a lot of admiration for 2D art, and I'll never forget how it all started. Thank you Macromedia, and *thank you everyone doing everything*
Something about the timing when this video came out gave a lot of us Newgrounds alumni a second wind of motivation. I don’t mean to speak for others, but i remember feeling a positive mood shift in a lot of us. And I’d like to thank you for that kaptain.
I wish I grew up in the era when Newgrounds was still super relevant and UA-cam still hadn't become the massive entity it is now. I feel like I could've actually made something successful back then and practiced animation. Now it just feels like the standard for animation on the internet is too high. Not to mention how extremely difficult it is to get noticed on UA-cam.
You and me Both! Although my issue was with the "Cartoons are Just for Kids!" stigma. I would have totally pursued a career in animation a half decade earlier, If not for how everybody see's animation as either a family or comedy genre.
As a person who always used UA-cam since I was a kid, it amazes me how this website was never in my radar. I'm so grateful for the legacy Newgrounds left.
The good old days. Newgrounds was the go to place when I was younger. Madness Combat, Salad Fingers, Egorapter, Sonic Shorts, the little skull kid with the chainsaw game, and so much more. That site was, is, and always will be the go to place for creators. Great video.
Newgrounds was my go to site back when I was a kid. It literally had everything a 6-10 year old kid could want all right there. Funny flash cartoons, webcomics, flash games, cool art, and boobs. Now that I'm in college I kinda feel like some old fart whenever I reminisce about Pico, Xiao Xiao, and The Cliff with my friends. Newgrounds really is an important part of our generation that at times I feel is sometimes forgotten.
Somewhat; a lot of old talent is there still, but unfortunately it's just not on the radar of young people as much as UA-cam is. If you want to animate, by all means do so, but I wouldn't go in expecting to get a huge amount of traction or views right off the bat. Networking is probably the most important thing - speak to people who like your stuff and build connections. You'll definitely get that out of Newgrounds.
Newgrounds, unlike UA-cam, is a meritocracy; if you make something good, people will see it and critique it on its quality for all points (from color to sound direction). If your animation is one of the best in the last month or so, it'll break through the fluff and get frontpaged, which is step one in doing this professionally.
StaySkeptic Yeah, exactly; it's also a good place to get honest feedback, what was good and what needs improving, from people that actually know what they're talking about. Newgrounds isn't a place to get rich and famous, it's a place to be discovered and improve yourself.
This video's points hit harder after watching Smiling Friends on Adult Swim, a TV series created by two newgrounds legends, Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack
FINALLY! I bingewatched all your videos a month ago, and have been waiting to see when you'd post a new one. Goosebumps and nostalgia, this is the best UA-cam channel that has ever existed.
+David Lemos Shad's stuff has not gotten any worse or better, It's still fucked up. Also his site was down due to Roblox, he's done fucked up shit, but drawing roblox is what tipped the scale apparently.
Newgrounds introduced me to Japanese dating sims. Good times! I remember back in 2010, I had a student animate using Flash in hopes of making it on newgrounds. I hope he did.
Nice to see this video getting the attention it deserves. I first found this through Tom Fulp's official post. It goes without saying that there was heart put into making this. This was well written up, and helps put a light on Newgrounds that often times gets overlooked. Job well done
My first videos were clay on NG. But I straight up quite after people kept saying I was ripping Knox off. Had never heard of him until then, watched his videos and was like "Wow this guy is really good, there is no room for me here." 15 years later I regret that decision more than anything else. If you are a 16 year old with un-diagnosed mild depression, don't let some random strangers on the internet get you down.
Harry Potter/DBZ and Egoraptor's Awesome Series were among my favorites from Newgrounds. The good ole days.....could've been better without the shitty AOL connection though
this video really got to me, newgrounds was my childhood. it was a unforgettable experience, i still remember times getting caught watching the 18+ animations, or my family walking by and asking "what are you watching?". the funny thing was at the time, i didn't know what i was watching either, but i loved it. from madness series to nockforce, egoraptor, sleepycabin crew, sexuallobster, zone-tan,the game jams, street fighter and metal gear collabs, the sonic rpg and mortal kombat vs street fighter sprite animations, the old shitposts and terrible strawberry clock memes, all the different holidays, anything you can think of. there was so much for me to enjoy, it introduced me to so many animators and content creators that i love to death, and definitely influenced the humor and creative process that i have today. it saddens me that newgrounds is not as big as it was, and that patreon has replaced newgrounds for animators and content creators, but i did enjoy the laughs and entertainment it brought me over the years. ps. NEWGROUNDS WAS FUNNY WHEN WE WERE ALL 12 LIVING IN THE SUBURBS LISTENING TO LINKIN PARK WATCHING DRAGONBALL Z DRINKING PEPSI WHILE PLAYING HALO CO-OP ON THE EASIEST SETTING DURING WHICH WE CONSUMED DORITOS AND LOOKED AT PAINTBALL GUNS ON EBAY IN INTERNET EXPLORER CONNECTED THROUGH AOL ON A 56K MODEM BEFORE HOPPING INTO OUR BALDING FATHERS' LATEST MIDLIFE-CRISIS-IMPULSE-SPONSORED JAPANESE-BUILT SUV TO HEAD TO THE MALL AND GET MORE SKATEBOARDING SHOES AND THIRD-RATE IRREGULAR LEVIS AND MOUNTAIN BIKE PARTS BEFORE HEADING HOME, VOTING DEMOCRAT AND MASTURBATING TO THE LATEST SEARS CATALOG WHILE HUFFING PAINT IN YOUR GARAGE BEFORE TALKING TO PEDOPHILES ON AIM PRETENDING TO BE WHATEVER CAMWHORE THEY'RE RANTING ABOUT ON MYSPACE WITH A MATRIX QUOTE/ANIME CHARACTER NAME/TRIPLE SIX-ASTERISK-PARENTHESES-SURROUNDED SCREENNAME BEFORE HEADING TO YOUR SUPPOSED "GOOD SCHOOL" IN THE MORNING TO BUY MORE POT TO SMOKE DURING YOUR COUNTER-STRIKE LAN PARTY WITH JIMMY AND THE REST OF HIS FRIENDS TAKING RITALIN AND ADDERALL AND PROZAC EIGHT TIMES A DAY BEFORE TAKING A CASUAL PASS AT LOCAL, STATE OR NATIONAL GOVERNMENTAL FIGURES, LEGISLATURE, OR STRUCTURE TO APPEAR EDGY AND INTELLIGENT IN FRONT OF YOUR BUDWEISER-SNEAKING, LIMP-WRISTED, NEAR-TO-COLUMBINE SOCIOPATHIC "DEEP" FRIENDS WHO PLAY THE VICTIM WHEN THEY START LOSING ARGUMENTS SIX DAYS BEFORE THEIR BOTCHED SUICIDE ATTEMPT SIMPLY BECAUSE SCHOOL TRAMP NUMBER TWELVE WOULDN'T GO UNDER THE BLEACHERS WITH THEM TO LET THEM GET TO SECOND BASE BEFORE THEIR THIRTEENTH BIRTHDAY.
2002 .. i was soo happy when my movie ( Galapagos ) was number one in the newgrounds Portal for many days i would stay up all nite reading all the comments in my movie again and again i was 14 ..those were the days .
Newgrounds was vital to me in my teens; it was my home. It lead me to be interested in animation, which lead to me being interested in film in general. I still have a few songs from the audio portal on my iPod, over a decade later.
i was just on new grounds the other day trying to find a band i found through newgrounds, back like back 10 years ago. They had their stuff in the portal. They made it to a TV show in canada (where they and I am from) called Much DisBand (Much being the name of the channel, then called MuchMusic). They changed their name, was forced to change styles by their "Music Guru" then were told to disband because they weren't sellable enough. They made some music, then actually disbanded. And i know all this because i went back to New Grounds and found them. I used to love new grounds as a kid.
That was an amazing way to put it. Honestly a lot of people sort of abandon their goals in wanting to do animation because it might be to hard or they lose their focus. if you want to make something, anything just don't give up. this is a huge motivator (as well as advertisement) for newgrounds and it's people. I find some old things there that I fully enjoy almost each day and it goes to show it really has a long road ahead of itself.
It was the first place I started sharing music. I was inspired by the community with it's wide range of art, animation, and music that I just can't seem to grow out of. Newgrounds has been a place welcoming everyone from already famed users and those starting to seek dreams for what they were passionate about. Newgrounds is truly the place where dreams start. I miss the old Audio Portal where top weekly songs were featured by our robot friend jamming to our tunes.
#14 on trending. Holy cow kaptain, your content is magnificent, enjoyable, soothing even. the work you put into your pieces is admirable. I love the writing and editing off course, much like Oceans Ultra, your videos bring so much nostalgia to so many of us, bittersweet maybe, but amazing. Thank you for the great content.
I remember back in the day around 2002 when I discovered newgrounds and was fascinated about how supportive the community was as a whole. It inspired me to learn and teach on many matters of subjects, and it all started just by asking animaters how they did certain things and what programs the used. After all if you can't do than teach.
Hey kaptainkristian love your work, but I was wondering if you could do a video essay on Hannah Barbara and Yogi Bear's collar; although it may seem unimportant the development of tricks to cut down animation cost helped get cartoons from expensive huge time consuming projects to still time consuming yet viable for tv. Personally I think it is overlooked as the quality of Hannah Barbara would be forgotten as time went on from the 60s and 70s to the action heroes of the 80s. I personally think the collar is so important to easier animation format that without it we might not be even talking about newgrounds or the flash Renaissance it created.
70s animation will always have a special place in my heart do to sick days spent watching boomerang when I was around 7-8; I remember always watching those big tom and Jerry compilations, looney toons, and of course scooby doo, wacky races, yogi bear etc. Boy life was a lot simpler I really do think that as time goes on these memories become more nostalgic, and that is why I want this topic to be discussed more; although animation had existed with cartoons I think what Hannah Barbara did could be seen as the first mass cartoon corporation that focused on tv exclusively and really defined the budget style animation of the 70s
I remember when I was a young teen, we didn't have cell phones with internet back then and we only had one computer. At night, I'd sneak out of my room and go on Newgrounds to watch videos by Zone. I was terrified of being caught back then, keeping the volume as low as I could since I couldn't find any headphones and always looking over my shoulder to make sure no one else was there.
Indonesia. The fucking ministry is soo stupid with their whole "positive internet" bullshit (censoring "bad" stuff). Like, can't we take care of ourselves as responsible citizens? Are all of us 8 year olds who can't handle things like that? Come on now...
You are a true old school newgrounds user if you know these things: ParagonX9 - Chaoz Japan Dad n Me Ima firin' mah lazer! Pico Hubert Cumberdale I like trains... Name some of your own.
Basically EVERYTHING Sonic Meat Boy Egoraptor Not JUST I like trains but all of Asdf movie Super Mario Bros Z Basically all of the other random shit I used to find on Newgrounds as a kid
Absolutely outstanding, not only grew up on Newgrounds, but with. being 14 in 2004 was a wild time for someone who just got cable internet. It's going to be really hard going forward trying to explain the internet pre-boom. How do you describe Autumn Tree, the flash based on Columbine, or just the dumb funny flash videos that always struck front page. I seriously think there could be books on the internet before everyone had cable internet, youtube, amazon, and facebook which now rule the world and everythings based on Twitter and Instagram. Thanks for makin this, great job
Hey Kristian. Really glad to see one of your videos again. I think you choose really interesting subjects to talk about Everytime. Love the way you edit the video and handle the visuals man. When I get my paycheck I'm gonna submit to your Patreon man, this kind of talent needs to be funded
This video almost made me shed a tear. As an artist it gives me a delightful feeling knowing that no matter what happens there's always gonna be a community of like minded individuals to share ideas with one another.
I remember watching all the Xiao Xiao flash videos with the old dial up connection. It would take like and hour to load, but they were always worth it.
Great and informative mini-documentary. Not only about about Newgrounds itself, but its unique position compared to UA-cam and other big websites, as well as its important role for animators and the community surrounding it since around the turn of the century as a whole. While it was kept largely objective in tone, one could definitely feel the passion and personal involvement you put in this video. This is likely to invoke some nostalgic emotions to anyone that's been or still is part of this community. Although you haven't uploaded that many videos here as of yet, I already got the impression that Newgrounds had a major impact on you.
What bothers me a lot is how the popular NG animators completely jumped ship when youtube came along. They could have posted on both youtube and newgrounds but they decided to completely abandon the platform that gave them a career, and then karma got their ass real quick when youtube threw them under the bus with their new algorithm. And now they wanna sit and be sad that newgrounds is dead- yea its dead because you took the audience it gave you and dragged them away to youtube. I got my audience from posting on youtube but even I would feel bad if I didn't also post on newgrounds. idk how they could have the heart to do that to a platform and community that made them.
Yeah, no. You're wrong about a few things here. First of all, most of them DID post on both youtube and newgrounds up until the youtube algorithm shift, which is when they basically stopped posting animation online altogether. They most certainly did not abandon newgrounds. In fact, the only reason they posted on youtube at all was because it actually paid them some decent ad revenue, due to the fact that it was a much larger corporate entity at the time (and still is, obviously), and didn't allow mature content. So don't act like there was some kind of righteous karma that punished them for not posting on newgrounds exclusively. Secondly, where do you see any big animators crying that newgrounds is dead? Most of them will tell you it's still alive, frankly. And finally, you've got to realize that posting animation online is not their focus. They want to have a *career* in animation, and if you follow any of them as closely as I do, you'd know that most of them are in the process of doing that as we speak. They're working on game development, pitching TV shows, things that will actually be able to let them make a living off of their work. The internet is an amazing place, but as it stands right now, it's simply not financially viable for animators.
Mosama I see what you're saying, but also sometimes it's hard. For example Arin was struggling for a little bit before Game Grumps. A lot of these animators want to do animation but also keep the lights on. So sometimes you need to focus on one thing and build on it so they can support themselves. They haven't completely abandon Newgrounds. they collab and support with other artists that catches their eye. and whenever you hear Arin ,Ross or Stamper talk about Newgrounds they alway praise it.
I think it made perfect sense to post on youtube I'm not faulting them for that. I'm only faulting the ones who started exclusively posting to youtube- which admittedly maybe it wasn't the majority but there were some who did that and they took a big audience away from newgrounds by doing so. and I'm ok with them pursuing whatever they want besides internet animation that's great I support all of that stuff and I know that internet animation isn't financially viable anymore that all makes sense all I'm speaking to is that moment in time where they were still doing internet animation and that scene still had a lively audience and they took that audience to youtube instead of doing what I think would have been the best- post on both ng and youtube. Props to the ones who did do that, and are doing whatever else now. I support them.
Like who? Which ones started exclusively posting to youtube? Because from what I can tell, all the animators that had any sort of substantial following, posted all their work on both platforms. Your whole betrayal narrative of animators abandoning the site that made them seems pretty made up.
Literally the video that inspired me to learn about editing, now I’m at 2500 subs It’s not much, but it probably wouldn’t have happened without kaptainkristain
So glad someone is taking the time for this. People always talk about Newgrounds as just a nostalgic thing of the past, but the fact is the members of that community are starting to do some crazy things. They are pitching and working on stuff that is going to be the foundation of a lot of western animation going forward. I hope it continues and I hope we can all recognize the place Newgrounds had in that. Thanks so much for shining such a polished light on this stuff, truly.
Man... I literally went to the trending tab on purpose for the first time ever and found your channel and ive just been fucking watching for like an hour... honestly just thanks for bringing to light how much all of this shit from my childhood means man, I never thought about most of the stuff you talk about yet it's almost painfully relevant. Keep it up homie
Man... seeing that Disney CalArts class and then the new school animating class made me think... black animators are extremely hard to find... hard to agree with the "everything, by everyone" when you don't see much of everyone... Just thinking about how I wanted to animate once and a lot of my friends did and do, but is there really a place for us to do that? Who knows! Newgrounds was legendary though, I should upload music there again.
The Behemoth, Edmund McMillen, Game Grumps, SleepyCabin - all of this and more because of some incredibly driven people that gravitated to Newgrounds. I'm so glad to have grown with the platform, and to watch as my favorite content creators progressed with their talents.
400 is still cheap compared to other adobe products, Like PS being 600. So, accessible isn't really accurate, more ''affordable''. However, now there are animation programs that are 100 dollars to free, and drawing tablets that are 200-400 dollars. Now it's accessible.
These are well worth the wait.
Mr Sunday Movies love you Nick and mable
fancy seein you here eh
Mr Sunday Movies Mr Sunday?! holy shit
Mr Sunday Movies Agreed.
fuckin oath james
another great video. i think online animation is very far from dead, and the community has a lot to show in the near future despite how scattered it may appear.
thanks for giving the community such a cool shout out!
psychicpebbles Si, señor.
i agree but it is being made much harder to assess as places like you-tube and Instagram aren't really that accommodating to new you tubes especially if they animate
Some of the OG animators on Newgrounds are still pretty big, Zone-tan is the first that comes to mind... for reasons i'd rather not get into.
I'm excited to see where you and your collaborators take the industry. Huge fan, excited for the next episode of Schmucks to come out (if you haven't abandoned it yet lol)
Where’s hellbenders
Back in my day...
are you lock legion?
it's crazy a beginner animator just asked me if i knew about newgrounds and i was like WELL...... Ng is home
I really do wish I could have been there.
Not you

Very true.

People act like Newgrounds is a thing of the past. It is still the creative hub that it used to be! Especially after the exodus of animators from UA-cam.
2 Left Thumbs Great for art to, your stuff does not get buried in a mountain of crap like deviantart because of the scouting system
Hans Van Harken Oh hey, Hans, nice to see you here.
Yeah, I hate how people act like Newgrounds is dead. People still make content there and it's still good. I check every couple of months.
For young people just getting introduced to the world of animation, Newgrounds is probably still the best website to get some exposure to the various approaches to the medium. Though the curation system is pretty strict from what I've heard, it does ensure that the movies and games on the front page are at the very least decent.

Likewise
Those 3 are rad fellas. As are RicePirate, Harry Partridge, El Cid, Johnny Utah, and formerly Egoraptor.
real nigga hours. PsychicPebbles, Oney, and Stamper along with the rest of sleepycabin are some of the funniest fucking people on the planet
I was more excited when an animation of mine didn't get blammed for the first time than I was when I got accepted into college.
I know that feel, lol
I don't know if many people understand how influential this man is going to become.
You might really enjoy 'Ahoy'

It was one of the only sites to feature free underground music from artists on the site since 2003. Also has great community contests in the forums, like the Art-Inspired Music Contest on the front page calendar. Original holidays like Pico Day, Robot Day, Pixel Day, there's so much to Newgrounds
Newgrounds for life! :D
All hail Pixel Day :3
Tommorrow is Pico Day
dont forget madness day ;)
Not to mention that the indie game movement started with flash developers, such as Edmund Mcmillen, who started posting stuff on newgrounds and went on to produce Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, or The Behemoth, with Castle Crashers and Battleblock Theater! We all should be thankful of the wonderful community of that website.
Daniel Moreno I didn't even know about the animation thing until a few years ago, I knew Newgrounds for games
Daniel Moreno Indie games were a thing long before newgrounds has them
But it was much harder to find good content. I'd say Newgrounds is as important or maybe even more important than something like Cave Story was to the rise of indies.
oh hell yea
Sup!
Everyone's talking about new grounds and how they watched porn there as kids...
Here I am thinking: "I thought newgrounds was a place where I played games"
People did both we also laughed a lot ..........at peoples differences
good times old fella
EXACTLY
I looked at violent games when i was small.
I WISH I knew about Newgrounds for both the porn AND the games, that would’ve been so much easier…
So much love and respect. Newgrounds was HUGE for me growing up. So glad to have seen these content creators go on to bigger, better things. Happy to call a few of them my friends, too. Extremely inspiring all the way around.

There's a bioshock?!!

My Uploads Check his channel. He hasn't made any of his own content for awhile.
Medium's Feeling Well Even a sequelitis would be great, but after the OoT after math he's just given up on it.
While AlbinoBlackSheep had some amazing (flash) vids, the site itself was rather lackluster and its lack of community and proper community moderation made sure Newgrounds became the bigger repository for artistic expression.
probably the best thing to watch before school. thanks for the mood lifter, kaptian.

you are trying to trigger people with that name and profile pic right?

You can still play it.
I am a high school English teacher. A student recommended I check out this video. I have never heard of Newgrounds before, but from the way it's described it sounds like it the online animation equivalent of Image Comics. I'll be watching for the next developments in this new animation revolution.
I was just sitting in my chair and thought, 'you know what would be good? If KaptainKristian uploaded a new video' and boom entire day made.
That comment was a little bit too asslickish tho :D
i had the same though just now
If the standard is high then that's a good thing, work harder.
@@reneelucero2923 Quality standards are NOT higher. Quantity standards are.
It sucked

Although my issue was with the "Cartoons are Just for Kids!" stigma.
I would have totally pursued a career in animation a half decade earlier, If not for how everybody see's animation as either a family or comedy genre.

As a person who always used UA-cam since I was a kid, it amazes me how this website was never in my radar.
I'm so grateful for the legacy Newgrounds left.

It's never too late.

The good old days. Newgrounds was the go to place when I was younger. Madness Combat, Salad Fingers, Egorapter, Sonic Shorts, the little skull kid with the chainsaw game, and so much more. That site was, is, and always will be the go to place for creators. Great video.
Really hits you in the heart. I really wish Newgrounds was used by more people.
Is the Newsground community still alive? I might consider producing some animated shorts there.
If you want fame, you have to use UA-cam. Like Kaptain said, use Newgrounds a springboard before UA-cam.
Yeah most people use patreon for support instead of Newgrounds now.
I was having a really hard time hearing you over all of that nostalgia
FINALLY! I bingewatched all your videos a month ago, and have been waiting to see when you'd post a new one. Goosebumps and nostalgia, this is the best UA-cam channel that has ever existed.

Nice to see this video getting the attention it deserves. I first found this through Tom Fulp's official post. It goes without saying that there was heart put into making this. This was well written up, and helps put a light on Newgrounds that often times gets overlooked. Job well done

any mention of the clay animation phase in 2003 to 2008 with knox klay world? that guy got me into stop motion for a couple of years!
My first videos were clay on NG. But I straight up quite after people kept saying I was ripping Knox off.

this video really got to me, newgrounds was my childhood. it was a unforgettable experience, i still remember times getting caught watching the 18+ animations, or my family walking by and asking "what are you watching?". the funny thing was at the time, i didn't know what i was watching either, but i loved it. from madness series to nockforce, egoraptor, sleepycabin crew, sexuallobster, zone-tan,the game jams, street fighter and metal gear collabs, the sonic rpg and mortal kombat vs street fighter sprite animations, the old shitposts and terrible strawberry clock memes, all the different holidays, anything you can think of. there was so much for me to enjoy, it introduced me to so many animators and content creators that i love to death, and definitely influenced the humor and creative process that i have today. it saddens me that newgrounds is not as big as it was, and that patreon has replaced newgrounds for animators and content creators, but i did enjoy the laughs and entertainment it brought me over the years.

My Favorite is Madness Combat. I know you barely see it in here cause of how violent it is, But it inspired me to be the artist I am.
Newgrounds was vital to me in my teens; it was my home. It lead me to be interested in animation, which lead to me being interested in film in general. I still have a few songs from the audio portal on my iPod, over a decade later.
That's the phase I've entered now. I'm 17 years old. 🙂
Such a great website! 😍
i was just on new grounds the other day trying to find a band i found through newgrounds, back like back 10 years ago.
Man Newgrounds. That brings me back! Blockhead, Klayworld, Leo and Satan, Salad Fingers, Strong Bad. So much nostalgia
Production values are off the charts, my man. Great work.

I remember back in the day around 2002 when I discovered newgrounds and was fascinated about how supportive the community was as a whole. It inspired me to learn and teach on many matters of subjects, and it all started just by asking animaters how they did certain things and what programs the used. After all if you can't do than teach.
Wow I miss new grounds. So many good memories as a kid on there
great video
Never have I clicked on a notification so fast!!!

I was terrified of being caught back then, keeping the volume as low as I could since I couldn't find any headphones and always looking over my shoulder to make sure no one else was there.

It's been 12 years now... Still waiting for divine intervention pt. 2
I dont wanna name names because I still like all of them- but an obvious one is arin, the biggest most popular animator from NG.
Maybe having that clip where link lactates on ganon was a bit much. Distracting

Holy shit, your word choice is so damn poetic. Top notch!

Man... seeing that Disney CalArts class and then the new school animating class made me think... black animators are extremely hard to find... hard to agree with the "everything, by everyone" when you don't see much of everyone... Just thinking about how I wanted to animate once and a lot of my friends did and do, but is there really a place for us to do that? Who knows! Newgrounds was legendary though, I should upload music there again.

Back in the 2000s when I checked on Flash it was 400 USD. Accessible? But I guess we all know why that price doesn't matter.
400 is still cheap compared to other adobe products, Like PS being 600. So, accessible isn't really accurate, more ''affordable''. However, now there are animation programs that are 100 dollars to free, and drawing tablets that are 200-400 dollars. Now it's accessible.
