You are never afraid to bring up ideas and techniques that our granny's used. The modern and savvy new ways of doing things aren't always the best AND most times are costing us a lot of money. Our granny's were frugal people because they had to be and the way things are going these days it seems we are in the same boat. I admire and thank you for bringing the old-fashioned ways forward whenever you can. Keep sharing!!

I absolutely love this technique!!! At one time, I bought a bunch of the magic tape and ironed my batting kind of like what you’re doing with the material. The magic tape was supposed to have glue and keep the two pieces of batting together. It did not! And on top of that, I spent a fortune. This idea of yours is pure genius and I could do it at no cost. Thank you so much Brenda for this tutorial! I truly love it!!! Thank you, thank you thank you

My mother in law carded her own cotton for batting. I cannot imagine how she hand quilted through it. I’m spoiled by my fancy sewing machine that joins batting with a running serpentine stitch. I handquilt sometimes but mostly use my fancy sewing machine to machine quilt. I love all of your channel.

Thanks Brenda i have never seen this done before i used to zigzag mine then i was shown how to do it with very light weight interfacing ironing it on the rough side so far it has worked really well for me.When i iron it on i use baking paper to press it down if you dont use something the batting sometimes sticks to your iron. Also i have make some blocks from your last video really enjoyed making them now have 2 charity quilts made this way.

This is a game changer for me! I hated sewing batting together because even with my walking foot, the pieces often didn't line up properly. I had to sew very slowly to make sure they were even. Not a fun job! The stabilizing effect of the fabric means I can mow through it with a multi-stitch zig zag in no time! I won't procrastinate any more. Thank you!

I like this idea ! I usually use the zigzag stitch to join batting pieces, and it usually works well. I will be trying this for sure. I have used small scraps of batting to stuff toys andf pin cushions. In the past, I have over lapped batting inside quilts by several inches (when doing a quilt as you go quilt) and make sure I quilt over that section when I am quilting the quilt. At the last quilt show I attended, we were taught to cut overlaping almost scollaped edges so the area joined would not show through the top and back. Some have told me to use a fuseable to hold the pieces together. Anyway I have to done it, it was not fun, it is messy, and I worry that it may one day come apart inside a quilt. I never could get this done using a zigzag stitch. Jordan Fabrics showed how to do it with a hand needle and thread. Thank you for this video.
Hi Arvetta! I was taught to do this by hand first and my grandmother didn't throw out good batting. I have tried those other methods but for years, I only had a straight stitch machine. Then when I got a zig zag stitch machine, I thought the joint felt lumpy. The cotton strips help support the batting egde and you don't have to worry about it falling apart inside a quilt. I hope you are having a great day! Thank you for watching and your support.

Thank you Brenda! I have my "klutz gloves" as well! Eggs-cellent idea for joining batting pieces. Also, to keep my fingers 'secure', I use a 'Ruler Grip' mad by Omnigrid; I'm sure there are other brands. It keeps my fingers off the ruler and safe. I was in a hurry recently and did not use the grip; yep, I sliced my finger, but good! My finger has a different shape now! Happy Sewing everyone! I never thought of doing the piecing this way. It's a great way to piece, especially when I'm travelling with my Featherweight. Easy peasy when you know how, right? Thanks again!

Wow!! I like this method of frankenbatting. I don't amass as much as you do so my pieces are generally thinner pieces (after i've trimmed the long sides on a quilt) . I bought a brand name batting in a giant roll from Fabricland. What a mistake. The batting was thin at spots and just wonky. But it was during their 50 percent off sale and the whole roll was 90 dollars and i was able to use it to make 5 quilts. But never again!!!! I think it was Pellon

Hello Annell! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. I would imagine you could frankenbatting Insulbrite in the same manner, just make sure the edges you are sewing together are trimmed straight. I have only worked with Insulbrite once and found I got the same results by double batting my potholder. There are a lot of different ways to join any batting but this is the method I use and lots of different uses for the batting scraps. Originally, I was taught to hand sew those strips to get a totally flat batting surface, but I have now changed to sewing them on my straight stitch sewing machine. Brenda, where did you get the word “frankenbatting?” I have used a franking machine to adhere postage. Did your Gma use this word? Good idea. I shall try-will make the batting blanket much secure-straighter! Thank you.
Hello Jane! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. The word "Frankenbatting" is a current word that some quilters use and I have added this in my language. Hello Deborah! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. I'm confused as to what you are asking about. Hi Diana! A leader ender is a piece of fabric that you put under the sewing machine needle in between sew seams. This could also be a secondary piecing project that sit beside the machine to run thru between other tasks. Try to think of it as sewing 2 quilts at once. I hope you have a great week ahead!

Hello Christiana! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. There are a lot of different ways to join batting but this is the method I use and lots of different uses for the batting scraps. Originally, I was taught to hand sew those strips to get a totally flat batting surface, but I have now changed to sewing them on my straight stitch sewing machine. I never saw this method before - great idea! Can't wait to try it out.

Thank you for this idea! I make a lot of potholders to use my left overs. Now I can save my larger pieces.

Thank you!

@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 I just used your method to piece together a 96” x 105” batting for a giant t shirt quilt today. Went together beautifully. Thanks again!
I like this idea ! I usually use the zigzag stitch to join batting pieces, and it usually works well. I will be trying this for sure.
I love your "clutz glove " 😍
Those little skinny trims of batting work well as stuffing for pin cushions . If it's cotton, I cut it into smaller pieces. Polyester I just stuff it in. Thanks for sharing this Brenda

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I also have a straight stitch machine (Singer 301 ❤) and while I do have the zigzag attachment, this looks WAY easier & quicker.

I have not seen this muslin trick to making frankenbatting…I am definitely going to try this

Good idea for makeup remover pads. 😊

Genius. Thank you! (So, it really isn't noticeably thicker at the point where the cotton strip is??)
Wanted to add that I truly appreciate your genuine joy & positivity, and the lovely comments you post to "the opinionated quilter" videos ;-)
Hello Toni! I'm glad that you like this video. This is not noticeable when inside the quilt because you only use a very light muslin to make your strips. I enjoy the Opinionated quilter and I wish I had more time to watch videos but family comes first. We are ready for Curves Bootcamp, which is coming us after the Nosegay sew along. Our virtual sew date is November 26, 2022 . If you are interested, please join and I would love to chat with you. I hope you have a joyful week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hi Brenda, I'm new to quilting and was wondering what types of battings are there and what is the best for lighter quilts? From England, GB.
Hello Lin! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. I'm a self admitted cotton snob so my answer is going to be Cotton or Cotton. I need to do a video about other battings. There are a lot of different ways to join batting but this is the method I use and lots of different uses for the batting scraps. Thank you for your reply Brenda. I have started to make a simple square knee quilt as a beginner using up Christmas themed fabric and many tips from your videos, I have been given some polyester batting but that feels too thick for this project so I'm going to take your suggestion and source some cotton. Happy quilting.
I have never seen batting put together like this I’ve always used zigzag stitch. I will try this method next time also Brenda can you use a walking foot? Thanks for sharing

Can you frankenbatt insul brite? I make a lot of potholders. If so, would this method work? Great video!
What is the piece you start out at the beginning and end with?
Hello Deborah! You are most welcome and I'm glad that you liked this. I'm confused as to what you are asking about. I'm just using 1 to 1.5 inch strips of muslin for the backing and support of the batting. The batting is sewn together and can have a T seam. Any tips for getting the batting out of my self healing mat?

@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I have a lot of scrap polyester batting my cousin gives me and I think I will try your method to join them. So far, I have just used them to stuff rag dolls.

What is a leader ender?
Hi Diana! A leader ender is a piece of fabric that you put under the sewing machine needle in between sew seams. This could also be a secondary piecing project that sit beside the machine to run thru between other tasks. Try to think of it as sewing 2 quilts at once. I hope you have a great week ahead! Thanks for watching and supporting our little channel.

An easier way is to cut up strips of interfacing and iron the 2 strips together.

I just but the two sides together, zig zag put 11 pieces together once for a quilt, can't tell the difference once you quilt it.
